How to unlock the A Knight to Remember achievement in THE WITCHER 3: WILD HUNT - Definitive Guide

Note: Lots of Witcher 3 achievements appear to be glitched/bugged for quite a lot of people. Often this can be fixed by restarting your Xbox and reloading a save. However, if this does not work then you may need to wait for a patch (Written 09/07/16).

This achievement is gained once you have won the tourney without losing a single event.

This can be done on any difficulty, however based on feedback I highly recommend playing on the easiest difficulty if you just want this achievement. For advice on doing this on Death March difficulty, see the bottom of the guide.

I also suggest you have a good saddle for the horse race. The game should autosave at the start of each event in the tourney.

To start this quest ("The Warble of a Smitten Knight") you must continue with the main quest until you fight the rock thing in the tourney arena. After that you will receive this side quest to talk to the wounded knight. Talk to him, then save the game. Go and enter the tourney. There will be a few events to complete with some story tasks in between:

Shooting Range - You must shoot the red targets (I went as Geralt, and had to shoot these). Note that I shot two of the wrong targets before realising which I had to shoot and I still won easily.

Horse Race - You have to ride around a long track in a limited time. You cannot do this without getting extra time. To get extra time attack dummies and targets that are all throughout the course. The dummies are beheaded with a melee attack and the targets are above the course and must be shot with your crossbow. I suggest you have the perk "Lightning Reflexes" to slow time during aim.

Here there will be a cutscene and depending on which armour you choose at the start you will have either a fistfight or a mounted duel. You do not need to win this, it appears that only the four 'official' events count, however winning may count as the honour virtue for another achievement.

Make a manual save while following the bird since the cutscenes after the 5v5 override autosaves from before it (particularly if you are on a hard difficulty). After following the bird make sure to say that you will remain in the tourney.

Fight! - You must win a 5v5 by defeating all of the enemies without you falling (you cannot use signs, and your allies can be slain).

Duel - You must 1v1 a large knight who is pretty slow and easy to dodge.

After the duel your achievement should pop.

Death March advice, this is taken directly and unedited from the comments of Kerman7, so a big thanks and all credit for this to him (expand spoiler):

A big thanks to ThePlatinumKush for all his efforts and providing information that I never got during my playthrough.
Also thanks to Kerman7 for his death march comment.

I'm surprised, but two of my allies stayed alive during the arena battle on Death March (level 47) and made the fight considerably easier.

Can I still get the achievement if I lost the fistfight against the dude with the scar on his face and his friends during the cutscene after the horse race? I'm on death march and lost after getting hit twice.

Okay, so I was able to make it through all of the game on my first play through, second play through on NG+, and the hearts of stone DLC on death march without needing to lower the difficulty until now (lvl 69) :(

Anyways, I got the achievement seconds after I beat the large knight while still having lost the fistfight, so the achievement only pertains to winning the 4 actual competitions. I think the fistfight/joust is just for bragging rights lol. Hope this helped anyone who was curious! Thanks for the guides by the way Qozul, you're a gentleman and a scholar

Thank you for all that information you gathered, I have updated the guide with what I thought appropriate, if there is anything you think I have missed then do mention it. I'm glad you managed to get it in the end.

Looks great honestly! I figured out that winning the joust/fistfight counts towards the honor virtue for the achievement Embodiment of the Five Virtues. Though, if failing to win, you can still also do the side quest Goodness, Gracious! Great Balls of Granite! to fulfill this virtue for the achievement (according to another guide, I haven't personally confirmed this yet)

Seems to be a bit glitched, because yesterday I got it (though it didn't pop which is another issue) and it showed up under "unlocked". Today its locked again but sitting at 100%

If it is locked at 100% then it should unlock eventually, a similar thing happened with some dark souls 2 sotfs achievements when it came out. It may take a day, or even a week but it should happen. Of course you could try simply redoing it to see if it helps.

This achievement is glitched. Just like the "A Wild Rose Dethorned" achievement in the HoS expansion before update 1.12. I've done everything as instructed above several times now and still no achievement.

I'm really struggling with the race. The bloody dummies just won't be hit. Sword goes straight through them...

I had the same problem on my first try too. I can't remember the exact positioning that I used (so I wont try to say), but try swinging from different distances until you work it out.

As long as you keep hitting the ranged targets then you only need to hit a couple of dummies.

Good Luck.

Well I managed to do it, but c could only get him to hit the dummies when it was on his right, so I just went round them each time.
I also found that if you have an elite controller, sticking the ride button to a paddle (I.e. A) means that you can still ride fast while shooting the targets. This helped a lot!

The race isn't that hard. I messed up twice, once getting stuck behind a fence, the other getting turned around. I also missed most of the dummys, but I got most of the targets. Lightning reflexes really helps, and I'm glad I put ability points into it yesterday. I didn't get to equip it until I used the mutagen, however.

If anyone is still having trouble unlocking the achievement, clearing the alternate MAC address in network settings and replaying the 5v5 and final duel (considering you won the other challenges) will pop the achievement!

Seems to work for other achievements that weren't unlocking too!

^I can confirm that clearing the mac address helps to unlock the achievement. Thanks for the advice! I just cleared it and reloaded the checkpoint at the start of the 5v5 duel and it unlocked after it loaded the scene after the 1v1 duel. smile

Just wanted to clarify - it's not a Mortal Kombat "Flawless Victory," you can take damage during the 5 v 5.

It didn’t pop for me first time, and I forgot to do manual saves in good places so I had to go all the way back to my last one which was just before the horse race which annoyed me so I said I would come back to it. Someone said that clearing the MAC address helps, so I did that then turned on my Xbox. Next day I did it all again and it popped during the cut scene where you revived the sword.

This is completely glitched for me. Can't win the 5v5. I was having so much trouble with it, I even let the other team kill all of my team while on Death March, and then turned it down to Easy so that I could kill every single member of the other team myself, and they still gave the victory to one of my team mates. I'll have to wait for a patch I guess.

I did this at Level 44 and honestly had no trouble. I also have the game of the year addition as well. When the five-on-five began I rushed into them and got the attention of two of them. All of my team did fall but they were a decoy more than long enough. I also had the Grand Master Feline set too. It probably helped out a good deal, so just go after the achievement based around the armor first and you should have no trouble completing this.

Did you fight the prince in the mounted duel? It should be available after the horse race, you have a cutscene and the prince will approach you and throw down his gauntlet, challenging you to a duel.

I honestly don't know. For me after the horse race I accepted the duel and had a 1v1 against the prince. You should have a save, so just keep going and see what happens. You might still get it because it may not treat that as an event, the same goes for the duel with the prince.

See what happens, I would appreciate knowing so that I can edit the guide.

Accepted the duel? Is that the mounted duel (joust) you mentioned in your guide? Because for me it was a fistfight with someone with a scar on their face that was unavoidable. I've followed the bird and am currently trying to do the 5v5 match and there was certainly no mounted duel for me. I chose to be Ravix of Fourhorn, so I'm guessing that difference is why I had a fistfight and you had a joust.

All my teammates for the 5v5 die within a minute of the beginning of the fight, leaving me to fight all 5 enemies on death march. Dying in two hits without being able to use signs is proving to be quite the challenge (My level is also 4 above the level recommendation making this surprisingly difficult). It is honestly frustrating because then I have to skip through the next long cutscene before I can load the checkpoint....

Welp, I just did my third attempt at the 5v5 and lost so now all 3 checkpoints are after my failed 5v5 match, so now I have to redo the part where I follow the bird since that was my last manual save before the 5v5. I'm just going to lower the difficulty for now and I'll let you know if you have to win the fistfight/joust for the cheevo. *sigh* this could have been avoided (or at least more bearable) if we could just save or load (or even pause would be nice) during cut scenes because I would have been able to save right before the 5v5 instead of having to rely on checkpoints that overwrite themselves, so I wouldn't be forced to replay everything because I like a challenge and lost 3 times in a row.

Based on hullubaloo's comments, i'm guessing he lost either the fistfight or the joust too and maybe that is why he didn't get the achievement. I'll go through it with losing the fistfight/joust that is after the horse race but winning everything else to confirm. Sorry for the wall of text, just frustrated at these loading screens.

For those who want to do it on Death March, I'd say do make the save before going back to Guillaume and leave the quest there for a while, go level up doing other quests. I was slayed like a piece of paper at level 42 (recommended is 37 I think) but came back at lvl 47.
Also you can use potions during the 5v5 (1v5 after 10s really) but can't access inventory during it, so make sure you prep correctly, as you do. I'd recommend using Superior Hang Mans oil and equipping White Raffard, Thunderbolt, Swallow and White Honey (all superior if possible). Also go to the villa and sleep in your bed so you can enjoy more vitality and extra potions (you need to have upgraded the villa first), and beef up blade and armour too. Finally, don your best armour, you do not have to fight with the one you've been given at the start; I swapped my beloved Viper for a full Toussaint heavy armour just for this fight.
With all this, I actually only had to use I think two Thunder, three Raffard and one Honey (and lots of dodging), so probably can be done at slightly lower level.
The next fight against the single slow knight will start without a chance for a manual save, however all potions will be restored (plus he's a piece of cake).

A flawless victory requires you to win all tourney challenges in "The Warble of a Smitten Knight Quest". This quest will automatically become available fairly early in the DLC, after rescuing the young knight in the arena.

This achievement is missable; you can complete the quest without winning all of the tourney challenges (the below details only concern the achievement, not the rest of this particular quest). You can practice the various parts prior to entering the tournament.

Specifically, to get the achievement, once you enter the tourney, you have to win (reload a save point before each one if you fail to win):

1. An "archery" contest. This is easy...just hit 9 targets with your crossbow before your opponent.

2. A horse race. This is a little more challenging. You need to successfully hit some of the track targets with your sword or crossbow (I found the crossbow targets way easier than the sword dummies) in order to have enough time to complete the circuit.

3. A grand melee, 5 on 5. Your team has to wipe out the other 5 knights before they get all of you. Not a tough battle, although you can't use magic.

4. A one-on-one vs. the previous year's champion Gregor the Mountain Gregore the something-or-other. This is actually pretty easy; although your opponent is huge, he's slow and you can just dodge/roll and hit him more or less at will.

If you win all of these, you'll unlock the achievement. Note that there is an option for quitting the tourney between the 2nd and 3rd of these. If you do so, you won't be able to get the achievement.

You will get this from the quest "The Warble of a Smitten Knight", which you will obtain when you reach the Tourney Grounds. The Tourney begins with shooting, then racing and the duelling last. You don't need to have a "flawless" victory in each category, you just need to win all three and then defeat the champion at the end. If you lose any of the competitions, then you won't get the trophy.

This achievement is obtained through the lengthy side quest entitled “The Warble of a Smitten Knight” and is slightly missable. It must be done before the main quest entitled "Capture the Castle," or else it will instantly fail.

“The Warble of a Smitten Knight” will automatically be added to your journal upon completing the main quest, “The Beast of Toussaint.” In it, you will help Guillaume uncover the mystery behind Vivienne all while taking part in the Knights’ Tournament. There are four core competitions in this tourney, a few of which are followed by a short interim for story purposes. Should you choose to enter as Geralt of Rivia, there will be an additional bout - a jousting duel - which acts as the third competition. You must choose to accept this challenge and defeat the Prince to stay on track with the achievement.

Make sure to create a backup save during the interims. You can use them to fall back should you lose any competitions during the quest. As an added tip, you can choose to practice each of the bouts with Guillaume before signing up so that you know what you’ll be going up against when the time comes.

Keep in mind that if you lose any of the four/five competitions during the tourney you will fail the achievement’s requirement. On top of that, you must make a specific dialogue choice when speaking to Guillaume in the tent after the "yellow bird" sequence. The choice you’re looking for is: “Wanna finish the tourney." If you don't say this, you'll be kicked out of the tournament.

Don’t worry about the achievement’s wording on getting a “flawless” or “perfect” victory in each of the four/five competitions. You’ll be fine so long as you win each of them. If guidance is needed for any of the bouts, feel free to utilize PowerPyx’s video guide below.

The achievement will unlock after the final competition: a 1v1 duel with a large, tank-like Knight.

MISSABLE

You will get this from the quest "The Warble of a Smitten Knight", which you will obtain when you reach the Tourney Grounds. You have the option if you want to train before you go through the tourney or not, it's entirely up to you. None of the three challenges are difficult. What you do between the challenges does not matter for the trophy.

You will do the shooting first, then racing and the duelling last. You don't need to have a "flawless" victory in each category, you just need to win all three and then defeat the champion at the end. If you lose any of the competitions, then you won't get the trophy.

Please note, you don’t have to do everything perfectly. The trophy description is incorrect. You can make mistakes and get damaged, the main thing is not to lose.

I only had 4 challenges, after which the trophy dropped:
  • Shooting
  • Race
  • 5v5 fight
  • 1 on 1 fight

You can miss the trophy! Be sure to complete this quest before starting the Assault on Dun Tynne, otherwise it will disappear.

The crossbow must have standard bolts (those of which there are an infinite number). I had explosive ones and hits on targets during the race were not counted.

You don't have to cut dolls with a sword. A shot from a crossbow counts, which makes the passage much easier. You can use food and elixirs in battles.

It was quite difficult to hit the scarecrows with a sword while riding. I simply skipped them, drove forward at maximum speed and shot targets with a slowdown (the red line skill was activated), in the end I was on time and counted as a victory.
