How to unlock the Kingmaker achievement in THE WITCHER 3: WILD HUNT - Definitive Guide

[Guide]

This achievement unlocks after a small series of 4 secondary quests, which are unlocked after a certain main quest. See below ;

i have tried to keep the spoilers to a bare minimum but educating yourself on the best course of action inherently comes with the risk of minor spoilers. Nevertheless:

Spoiler alert:

After the main story quest ' The King is dead - long live the king '' you will automatically unlock 2 secondary quests titled:

1. Possession
2. The Lord of Undvik

After you have completed these you will get the quest called 'King's Gambit '.

During this quest you will get a dialogue in which you have to decide who you will aid during this mission. For the sake of this achievement it is very important that make a choice between helping Hjalmar or Cerys . If you pick the option of not supporting either one of them, you will not unlock this achievement. SPOILER: The person you decide to assist during this quest becomes the new ruler.

then at the end you will get the quest named 'coronation'. Your achievement unlocks after you have completed this quest.

I've found with the new update clicking "Y" on the main menu and reloading your profile has fixed the issue for me. Annoying but a minor inconvenience

Bugged for me too. The 5 places of power active at once is also bugged for me. Continued playing and got the fistfighting achievements shortly after those two bugged. Not sure what this means.

The achievement glitched for me as well. Does anybody know if there is a way to work around it? I am playing the GOTY version. I was wondering if starting the DLCs could make the side quest available again. Any feedback would be highly appreciated.

GOTY version: A regular console restart and then loading an autosave before the coronation cutscene worked for me.

I cannot - for the life of me - get this achievement to unlock. I've tried resetting the console and reloading the autosave but nothing. I reloaded before the Possession quest and did all 3 quests again (picked Hjalmar the first time and Cerys the second time ) but still nothing... (yes i'm late to the game).

Alright this is by no means a guarantee for succes but trying the next steps 'might' work.

1. Loadup your game with the old savefile before the choice
2. Go to network settings and "go offline" (only works on your home xbox otherwise you will be booted to the dashboard)
3. Make the choice, continue playing for a few more minutes and make the save
4. Quit the game and go back online
5. Boot up the game and open your "all achievements" page, and select the game there (which opens te complete list).

Sometimes this pops achievements that are bugged in the cloud.

This is for completing the level 18 side mission Kings Gambit. To unlock the side mission you must first complete the other side mission of Possession. This mission you get later after talking to
. These missions are located on The Skellige Isles after you meet with
during the main storyline.

Can I ask how you managed to finish Kings Gambit?
Everytime i try (and its alot) it freezes on the loading screen.
A known issue which the devs say they are going to fix but how are people managing to complete the quest and others are not :(

Is Possession from a specific notice board or do you get it from someone?

You might want to add to the guide that you'll also need to complete The Lord of Undvik side mission as well. Once you complete both the Kings Gambit Quest automatically shows up.

Yes, the line of quests to get this is quite long. If I remember correctly, once you do the mail story quest, you have to do both the "Possession" and "Lord on Undvik" quests, then start King's Gambit. All of these are somewhat lengthy, but Lord of Undvik is quite long in itself. I am amazed at how long and involved even the side quests are in this game.

Also worth adding that these quests involved in getting to the point of earning the achievement are quite long especially The Lord of Undvik one. Think it took me 2 hours but i'm sure it could have been done a bit faster than that as I was going for the optional bits.

In order to complete this subplot, you must first complete the following main story quest: "The King is Dead - Long Live the King!" Take note that this is the first main quest available on The Skellige Isles. After completing this quest, you will automatically receive two side quests entitled "Possession" and "The Lord of Undvik." At this point, the achievement's subplot opens, so complete the following four side quests as soon as you can:

  • Possession
  • The Lord of Undvik
  • King's Gambit
  • Coronation

As always, be sure to set a quest as your active quest so you can track its objectives. Please take note that during the "King's Gambit" quest, you will be required to decide (during a dialogue) who you want to choose to be ruler of Skellige; Cerys or Hjalmar. It doesn't matter who you choose, but you NEED to choose one of them! If you ignore this part of the side quest (by saying they can figure it out on their own), you'll miss out on an ally for the "Full Crew" achievement!

After completing all four side quests listed above, the achievement will unlock. Refer to the detailed video guide below for aid in any of the quests involved with this achievement.

To earn this trophy, you must first complete the main story quest "The King is Dead - Long Live the King"! That's the first main quest on the Skellige Isles. After you complete this quest, you will automatically receive two new side quests called "Possession" and "The Lord of Undvik" (cannot be missed). You can mark them in the side quests tab in your inventory.

The subplot about Skellige's ruler consists of multiple side quests:

  1. Possession
  2. The Lord of Undvik
  3. King's Gambit
  4. Coronation

As soon as Possession and The Lord of Undvik are completed, you will automatically receive the next quest "King's Gambit". In this quest you have to choose during a dialogue whether to go with Cerys or Hjalmar. This will decide who becomes the ruler!

Important: If you don't help either of them during the Dialogue in “King’s Gambit” you will miss the Full Crew trophy and someone else will become ruler. So be sure to help either Cerys or Hjalmar, it doesn't matter which one you chose.

The storyline about choosing a king on Skellige contains four tasks:

– Chosen One of the Gods (level 17) Investigation quest, it is possible to do without a fight. However, if you choose to fight, it is recommended to use the Igni sign and oil against ghosts often and tastefully.

– Lord Undvika (level 17). The quest contains many small branches that are highly recommended. In particular, explore the ship on the way to the mission marker, and then Hjalmar’s camp. Particular attention should be paid to searching for people following bloody trails - as a result, you can find an ally who will help not only in the battle with the Giant, but also in Kaer Morhen.

In the Giant's lair there is a cage with the character Viga. If you free him before the fight, he will immediately attack the Giant, thereby eliminating the advantage of a surprise attack. However, he will help in battle and will be grateful for the glory.

– Queen's Gambit (level 18). It is the one you support in this quest who will become the Skellig King.

- Coronation. A quest cutscene in which you can enjoy the fruits of your labors.

When you kill the giant, do not forget to free Vigi the madman from the cage, he will be very useful in Kaer Morhen. Here is my video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amzlTPRXnQY

The key to Viga's cage lies in the chest next to the giant, to successfully get the key without waking the giant, just watch your step and don't step on the snow.
