How to unlock the A Friend in Need achievement in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Definitive Guide

Playing through the story you will be presented with a choice as to what lead you want to follow up on when you reach the Rosemary and Thyme and speak with a little dwarven friend. Thus, a storyline will be triggered to rescue Dandelion.

Along the way, the best way to get info as to where Dandelion is is to make nice with Djikstra in his broken vault/Whoreson missions.

The mission where you ultimately save Dandelion is "A Poet Under Pressure." You and the dwarf will set up an ambush to spring Dandelion. When you attack the caravan, a Witch Hunter will flee and you must make haste and chase him down to, eventually, a dwarven farm. The Hunter will lock himself and Dandelion in a house and you'll have to get the key to the cellar of the house from the dwarf who lives there. Go into the cellar, kill the Hunter, untie Dandelion and the achievement is yours.

PLEASE NOTE (potential spoilers): This is my first playthrough, I went the route of helping Pricella get Dudu out of hiding and, since I killed the Witch Hunter captain with Triss, I had Dudu impersonate the Captain. I'm not sure if NOT attacking the Witch Hunters straight on with Triss in an earlier mission affects your ability to spring Dandelion or not. If anyone else knows this, please add below so we can make sure I'm either entirely right of if there is an alternative way of saving him.

Same here, attacked Witchhunters, killed their leader, used the doppelganger, attacked the caravan, freed Dandelion in the Dwarfs's cabin and nothing.

Thanks Asturgis, I'll try it when I start a new playthrough.

I can confirm what Asturgis posted. I'd done this several different ways before reading his response and realizing ALL of the individual things mentioned must be done so that the quest updates correctly.

Shit... I'm stuck with this one. I have the GOTY edition, and I swear I tried to follow everything you guys said (walked on foot, picked up the poems, inspected the hat, followed the scent, inspected the horse...)

EDIT: Tried 4 times, it didn't work, then I restarted the Xbox (it clears the cache), and after following everything again, it popped! So if anyone made it wrong the first time, try restarting the console and loading an old save.

The guide must be updated with the information said by "Asturgis", with an alert that if you do not follow the step by step it will not unlock the achievement!

Luckily I had a save a few missions back by the time I realized I missed this achievement. Followed the guide and thus no achievement. Asturgis update worked perfectly and it popped first time trying it that way.

Note: I couldn't find any poems on the ground but I did the rest of what they had listed and it popped no problem.

I just got the achievement at the 3rd time of asking using the guide above - pick up the ring, speak to the villager, find the hat, check the horse, check the door, finish. I did also find the poem pages however as BENNO above says that doesn't seem to matter. Hard to describe where they are - on a straight stretch of road a little before you turn right to head in to the village. The pages are on the right hand side of the road whilst the trail is on the left

Following Asturgis's comment, which ultimately helped me. I only found one poem. I then found the hat, forking right immediatley after speaking with the blacksmith; examine the horse and then followed the steps to getinto the hut.

Same here on the GOTY edition. Tried clearing my cache twice. I had to start NG+ and get there again just for this trash of a quest (I hate Dandelion and all that theatre BS, only part of the game I have trouble with), and I really don't know what to do anymore. Seems like nobody else on the net is having this problem. A few people but zero answer.

EDIT solution found for those having a problem.

HeyMrBassman who wrote the guide for this achievement on the GOTY edition forum says that a glitch can break this quest if you don't do certain things, specifically following Dandelion's trail on foot (don't lose the hoof prints and just ride because you know where to go). Pick the poems he dropped, talk to the blacksmith, then go right (even though he says to go left), and pick Dandelion's hat on the floor. It will change the quest. You'll now be following his perfume's scent, no more yellow zones on the map. Once you get to the hut, examine the dead horse, then try to open the door. It will update the quest again. Then finish it. The achievement unlocks exactly as you exit the hut with that dildo and Priscilla arrives.
