How to unlock the Even Odds achievement in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Definitive Guide

This could be gotten with in the first hour or two of the game. Can be done on ANY difficulty, including Just the Story! (Recommended) Video guides for the quests at the bottom.

First when you get into town and leave the pub go over to the Notice Board and take the Contract: Devil by the Well follow the quest up to the battle. Fight the Noonwraith with ONLY your Silver Sword, DO NOT use an Oil, Potion, Sign, Bomb or Mutagen.

That's 1 down, second is going to be The Griffin in the main quest Beast of the White Orchard . You pick this quest up by following the Main quest Lilac and Gooseberries. Again follow the quest to the part where you meet Vessemir in the field and get the crossbow. I DID NOT USE THE CROSSBOW, I don't think that changes anything but just in case, don't use it. The battle is easy enough. Use ONLY your Silver Sword.

The achievement pops right after you defeat the Griffin.

Edit: You CAN drink water and eat food to heal during the fight
Edit 2: I took out the walkthroughs and added my own person fight recordings to the guide. I started a new save just to record these and from the first cutscene I finished both quests in around 35 minutes. Very easy with starting gear!
Edit 3: Sharpening your weapons WILL NOT void the achievement

I can't harm the ghost with my sword. I'm playing on the highest difficulty, tho. Maybe you need oils and stuff to beat him?

Missable Achievement, if you complete the contracts before you pop that achievement.

Yeah, you need to prepare for the fights on Death March, and possibly lower which is why I tested and specified that i can be done on the easiest difficulty with only an hour or two of setup!

Yes Tenreth, you will need specter oil and to cast yrden & more than likely quen in effort to defeat her.

I take it you're new to Witcher games? It's not like a casual RPG. If you go into boss fights thinking you can hack and slash to win, you're going to have a bad time.

Why did you use a sign in your video? Where's the footage where you actually fought the devil for the achievement? And please don't post your entire quest, just the boss fights.

It says you can't USE mutagens. Can I have it equipped on my character panel or do I need to take it out? I imagine that USE means using the version you craft with alchemy. Did anyone test that?
0

By Feiffer05 on 22 May 2015 20:56
I assume use means having one equipped, I did not have one equipped and I got the achievement. I doubt it's worth testing as you dont need anything other than your silver sword.

Well, completed the first two contracts on Death March, so not impossible, just very hard. Used the Viper Silver Sword and sharpened my weapons (So sharpening does not void this achievement).

Just got it after the griffin. Wasn't too hard on death march. The noonwraith isn't too bad if you eat a lot and don't stop with the quick attacks. Just hit x as fast as you can.

Weird. I had to do FIVE contracts like this in order for it to pop. I'm assuming it's glitched somehow.
0
0
By Glass Hills on 25 May 2015 06:18
This has to be glitched. I only ever did one contract without using signs, mutagens, oils, bombs, and potions and it popped for me during the Strange Beast contract. I had mutagens equipped during the battle (almost always do).

By Vermigs on 02 Jun 2015 20:44
Vermigs: Having mutagens equipped doesn't void the achievement, neither does using the crossbow. Downvoted the solution until it fixes those pieces of misinformation, it actually makes the achievement harder than it needs to be.

By WhyattThrash on 15 Jun 2015 21:58
Contracts are easier than normal mob packs in death march, so I wouldn't worry.

And not all contracts count, they have to be monster contracts. Anything involving humans doesn't count.

Those aren't my videos, they're just quest walkthoughs because I didn't want to write a full guide for each one incase people get stuck. I can remove them if it's confusing, just thought it was better than saying "do the quest to the part where you fight" despite them being easy and straightforward.

@fuzzmeister no the tracker doesn't work for any achievements in the game. Eating is fine.

@dylan is white I don't know what happened, I didn't risk it but the achievement description specifies no mutagens so for anyone else I simply wouldn't risk it.

Since all other solutions are completely wrong regarding what voids the achievement. The only things that void the achievement are using any of:

- Signs
- Potions
- Mutagenic POTIONS (having mutagens eqipped is totally fine)
- Oils (on ANY of your swords, even though you don't use the oiled sword)
- Bombs

Anything else is completely permitted: Crossbows, any type of armour, sharpening weapons, eating foods etc. If it's not in the above list, it's permitted.

The only other requirement is the contract needs to involve the possibility of ending up in a monster "boss fight" but other solutions cover those parts well.

Immortal x Dead adds: If you have to use a potion as part of the requirement for the contract / kill, it DOES NOT prevent the achievement. F.e "Muire D'Yaeblen" contract on Skellige, which requires the use of the "Drowner pheromones" potion in order to complete.

Wanted to pop in and leave a note that I haven't seen yet. While I did unequip all potions, bombs, mutagens, and didn't use any signs, I think it is important to note that while doing the "Contract: Muire D'Yaeblen contract on Skellige, it requires the use of the "Drowner pheromones" potion. After using it and completing the contract, the achievement did pop. It seems that if you have to use a potion as part of the requirement for the contract / kill, it DOES NOT prevent the achievement. Also, This was done on Death March, and was my 2nd contract done like this.

If we can save one person from making the stupid mistake that I made, then it's a job well done! wink

Honestly, though, I never once thought about the negative impact of having oil on the steel sword until after the achievement didn't pop. The way I figured, as long as you didn't have oil on the silver sword that you use to kill the monsters, then you were okay (kind of like how you can have mutagens equipped, but you can't use a decoction). Despite never using the steel sword during the contracts, it seems the presence of any oil - anywhere - voids the achievement.

Geralt must wash his hands pretty thoroughly after snarfing down those chicken legs. o.O

This might seem obvious in hindsight, but there's one stipulation that isn't explained in any of the solutions here on TA: you can't have oil on EITHER sword while completing the two contracts. I did Patrol Gone Missing, then immediately did Merry Widow. Sure enough, the achievement didn't pop. I instantly suspected that it didn't pop because, despite having no oil on my silver sword (you know, the one you use to actually kill the contract monsters) my steel sword still had two hits of oil left on it.

Before redoing both contracts, I found a wolf on which I discharged the last two hits of oil on the steel sword. The second time around, I got the achievement. On both attempts, I went so far as to un-slot all potions, both bombs, and all of my mutagens. The ONLY difference between the attempts was that I had no oil on my steel sword on the redoes.

I wonder how many people don't know this and wonder why the achievement didn't pop, so I recommend adding this observation to your solution. :)

You need to kill two Monster on which you have a Contract on, only with your Silver Sword. Also check if you have mutagens equipped.

If you haven't done this is White Arden, then the Contract Shrieker (Level 8) and An Elusive Thief (Level 13) in Velen/Novigrad are not that hard - also both Contract have their own Achievement. I did this with Level 11 and the Griffin Witcher Gear, pretty easy.

Thanks for the heads up on the suggested quests, just so happened I looked at this while having a few of these active.

I was level 11 on 'Death March' difficulty and tackled 'Contract: Shrieker' and 'Contract: The Merry Widow'. I used bread and water when hit to get some regeneration and my tip for 'The Merry Widow' is to fight outside of the cemetery as you have more space to roll out of the way. Good luck all.

Tried this using Elusive Thief and Woodland Beast ... both very easy on death march but no achievement. killed both targets. I used the crossbow technique for The Shrieker. But. I stayed in the graveyard for Merry Widow. If you run around the building the Hag will lose aggro on you after a couple of corners. You can then heal up. Or sneak up for a few crits. Then repeat. I Just did both of them at level 8

Did it on the Shrieker and The Doppler and it worked.
I know many say it works with Mutagens equipped but I wanted to be sure and unequipped them. 2 things to add to your solution

1) To make it count you must actually KILL the Doppler. Letting him go after the fight against your Mirror Image does NOT count towards this.

2) It is enough that you do not use bombs / oils / signs / mutagens during the fight against the contracted beast. Before and after you can use them and the mandatory bomb you have to throw towards the Shrieker (Samum) does not void the achievement.

I got a little confused for the same reason - Muire D'yaeblen *requires* the use of potions to complete the quest... but I still unlocked the achievement after completing it. I drank a White Honey to clear potion effects right before the actual fight, although I'm not sure if that's necessary, but it worked and wasn't too difficult.

I don't see how u can consider Muire D'yaeblen to be a good one, you HAVE to consume a potion for her to even appear... Therefore I couldn't get it on that one, that being said I unequiped everything with the Merry Widow, and everything EXCEPT mutagens with here comes the groom, and it popped on here comes the groom, so u can have mutagens equipped. I'm playing on deathmarch so I had the green vitality ones equipped and here comes the groom was very easy, its a level 19 quest and I was level 23, when it dives at you just start hitting it, only had to do that twice before it was dead, had feline upgraded sword so did bleeding DoT while it was flying around

For those playing on hard aka Death March... You'll have the quest Contract: Swamp Thing, find yourself a good crossbow and you can just shoot the mini-boss and do NOT get into close combat he will most definitely kill you within a few strikes.

I hope this help a few people with this achievement.

This work on all difficulty level even though I pointed the fact that people on Death March will be happy to have a free and easy boss to get this achievement with.

I just earned this achievement in Act 1, at level 1 and this is how I did it: Accept the Devil by the Well contract from Odolan in White Orchard. His house is near the Blacksmith. Follow the map markers and investigate as prompted. Between 12 noon and 6 PM the wraith will appear. I used raw meat and milk to restore health. Silver sword my only weapon.

After defeating the wraith; I used the nearby fast travel sign to return to White Orchard to sharpen my swords and replenish meat & drink and meditated until noon. I ignored the mission prompt to return to Odolan for my reward. Instead, I fast travelled back to the well. I saved again and fought the next wraith that appeared. As soon as I defeated her the achievement unlocked.

My game has the latest updates.

This one is pretty straight forward. Just do kill two contract related monsters without using any of the mentioned items.

An easy way to do this is to start a new game on "Just a story" and skip all the dialogue. As soon as you get to "White orchard" do the "Devil by the Well" contract from the notice board, you can pretty much just button mash (using cn_S) for an auto win.
Next continue with the story until you have to kill the gryphon. Killing the Gryphon will net you the trophy.

Of course you can do this mid playthrough, just remember to unequip your mutagens.

*Missable Trophy*
You must kill two contracted monsters without using any Signs, potions, oils, bombs, or having any mutagens equipped. We found the two that the easiest were the first two that you could complete: Devil by the Well and the Griffin from the main quest line, both are completed in the Prologue in White Orchard.

If one of these does not suit you, you can do this for any two of the 26 contracts available. Take a look at the Geralt: The Professional trophy to find which monster suits you best for this attempt.

0

Make sure to read through THIS THREAD and choose monsters that seem the weakest to you. Personally, I believe that the grave hag in "The Merry Widow" Contract and the water hag in the "Muire D'yaeblen" Contract are the easiest enemies to kill when going for this achievement. Other players may decide to take a different route and that's absolutely fine.

Just remember, when you're facing the contracted monster, you can only use your swords (Silver Sword). You won't be able to drink potions mid-battle, throw bombs, cast any Signs, coat your blades in oil, or have any mutagens equip! If you do, it will void progress towards the achievement. If there are smaller monsters/enemies around the contracted monster during the fight, you are allowed to use more than just the swords on them. Keep in mind that there are 26 contracts in the game, so this achievement is technically missable.

Can be completed in the very first location, White Garden, by completing two tasks to kill the ghost of the well and the griffin. Just don’t use any enhancements, magic or potions during the fight with them.

A simpler option:
1) Start a new game in the “Hearts of Stone” add-on
2) Head to Velen and take any two orders for monsters.
3) Do not equip anything unnecessary, do not drink decoctions and elixirs, do not use oils.
4)As a level 32 Geralt, you can easily defeat your opponents, perhaps without even taking damage

I was dumb and missed the opportunity in the White Garden. I did it at level 11 on the orders of a Fogman from the swamps (stupidly shot with a crossbow) and a Wyvern near the Nilf camp (also nothing complicated: dodges and a couple of blows. If it flies up, we shoot it down with a crossbow).
Regarding the equipment: I installed bare swords (without glyphs), removed skills and mutagens, removed bombs, and also put on clothes without glyphs. I used food. Difficulty: To Death.

the trophy is actually easier than it seems!
it can be performed scattered, i.e. do not kill 2 monsters in a row and you can also use a crossbow, the main thing is not to forget to remove the mutagens and everything that is written in the trophy itself!
I first killed the ghost in the white garden, then the screamer (I shot him with a crossbow, it took a long time, but he definitely died, by the way, don’t let him near the water, if he dies there, then you will fail everything and the trophy associated with him is the same, lure him into the cave , it’s next to the water, you can easily kill him there), the trophy dropped immediately after you killed the squealer, and the next trophy for it dropped as soon as you passed the quest and received the reward!

I closed it in NG+ by simply shooting a griffin in the white garden and a werewolf in the mission “Wild Heart” with a crossbow. It is unknown whether this is a bug or a feature, but the inserted mutagens (all 4 slots) and the active mutation "Cat's Eyes" had no effect.

If you realized about this trophy a little late and went through the first location, take the order and calmly go through the storyline when you notice in the task menu that your level is 5 levels higher than the levels, you can safely go after the monster, I removed the mutagens just in case, you can use food without it it was used up quickly, you need to pump up the gourmet skill, which restores HP over 20 minutes, eat what replenishes the most HP per second. At the death difficulty level, a very useful skill and there will be no eternal hassle with food and potions

The mutagens and gourmet were inserted into the slots, and the trophy was received. I did it at level 24, going through orders a couple of levels lower.

The first two orders are killed perfectly even on the "death" difficulty.
There were problems with the ghost, but they were solved with a silver sword, which is crafted from a recipe located in the same first zone.

it’s simple and easy to do - the first contract is a griffin - it’s plot-driven, you can’t miss it - we run stupidly and hammer away from behind, since he climbs into the queimir all the time, the 2nd contract is a kurolisk on assignment - a squealer, both of these flying animals are hacked even on the To Death difficulty in the small ones minced meat only with a sword, I didn’t even have to eat food. The only thing is that I went to the squealing task already being lvl 9 and having a basic griffin kit, so I don’t need to rush there right away, we do the basic quests, look for witcher gear, craft it, put it on and go kill the kurolisk.

It’s easy to kill monsters on a horse... accelerated, hit, ran, and so on until you kill
