How to unlock the Overkill achievement in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Definitive Guide

Easiest way is by using the bow with the Broadhead Bolts (100% bleeding) + Puffball bomb (poison) + Dancing Star bomb (fire) at the Devil's Pit location.

Don't forget to meditate to replenish your bomb and fast travel to have the bandit respawn. Do this and you'll get the achievement in less than 10 minutes.

When the game first came out, I tried using bombs and it didn't work. They must have patched it and fixed it. Wow, this solution is probably the fastest now that they fixed it.

Work perfect, but one slight modification - change Dancing star for Igni - makes you switch one less time equipment and a faster reaction. At higher levels this is important for those bandits die very quickly...

You can find the Puffball schematics at the Herbalist PAST Oxenfort , a little northeast of Oxenfort, and he sells a bunch of other schematics you may be looking for as well. This is a fixed location.

Try doing it in this order; Bleeding, poison, fire. You should see above bandits head that they were bleedind after that poison and finally burning. If you don't have enough time do to it change the difficulty into your setting if you are not playing the hardest one. It will give you more time.

Another great location to work on this one is in Kaer Morhen at the Iron Mine location. 3 bears spawn and they are easier than the bandits. Use a little Axii, broadhead, puffball, dancing star. Jump back and forth between here and the Devil's Pit.

Just in case anyone tries like I did, Tracking Bolt's don't seem to work for some reason. I don't understand why, they say 100% chance to cause bleeding and hitting people with it even makes it say bleeding and start taking damage but I couldn't get the achievement. As soon as I started using Broadhead Bolts it worked perfectly fine. Seems pretty bizarre to me.

Was doing all of the above and it finally popped for me when I defaulted to return to the Devil's Pit. For those struggling to kill low-level mobs turn on the enemy level-scaling in Options>Gameplay don't even have to swap your difficulty they're now healthy enough to pull off a complete rotation of status debuffs like De Beast said.

Didnt realise you could upscale Enemy levels in the options. Kudos.

I found running from the gate of devils pit, past the first 2 guards straight ahead up the small stairs turning right up the next set of stairs has you standing on a raised platform, with a dead end corner that the enemy cant get to. (Careful of the gap you can fall through at the top of the stairs) here I found the Aarding the guards off the platform was easy durle to the gap in the railing. Master Marksman was easy. Also after poisoning/burning and bleeding one guard you can also use this safe spot to meditate to refill bombs. Meant I did overkill here without having to leave the area.

I found it easier and quicker to use a guard/ the barons henchman. Keep it on normal or so. Get near a guard. Use igni twice to anger him. Lure him somewhere. Throw the puffball. After he starts getting poisoned. Shoot a Broadhead bolt. Then light with igni (make sure u have the Pyromaniac skill equipped. Then lure him back into the poison smoke and do it again. I had Superior Puffballs so they last forever. This saves having to travel back and forth. Just how I did it. Cheers!

There is a rather small island west of Kaer Trolde & south of Spikeroog where this method worked perfectly for me. There is a fast travel to this island called Kaer Almhult but the area where this worked for me was on the south side, where you have to go to get the bear school gear upgrade diagram. The only way I could get it to work without killing the bandits too fast was to do it in the order that CaptBonhommeQC suggested - arrow, poison then fire. The advantage I found doing it here rather than at the Devil's Pit is that as long as you don't kill every single bandit, you can meditate for as little as one hour and not only does this refill your bombs but the bandits are there again as well. Would like to thank CaptBonhommeQC for writing this solution because it worked great.

New Solution:

Since a previous update, they patched in being able to use equipment now, which makes this achievement A LOT easier.

Get some Broadhead Bolts for bleeding, Puffball bomb for poison and Dancing Star bomb for fire and head over to the Devil's Pit located next to the Hanged Man's Tree.

Old Solution:

Before I got the achievement I put PS4Tophies guide here, but I'm going to edit and add how I did it personally, so there will be two guides here, use which ever you want.

To get the effects at the same time, I recommend doing this:

For Bleeding: Under Combat skills; the very last fast attack one (Crippling Strikes; Use a Potion of Clearance if you have to) causes bleeding damage for each fast attack. As for as I know, it's 100% chance of bleeding.

For Poison: Make the Serpentine Steel Sword. That gives 15% chance to poison (+5 more if you equip a greater poison stone).

For Fire: Just use Igni.

My Guide:

What I did to get the achievement was I made the Serpentine Steel Sword and used it on monsters. The reason I did this was because steel swords are way weaker against monsters so it gave me more hits which helped guarantee all 3 effects at the same time. I also recommend taking off your red mutagens so you'll do even less damage. It helps a lot.

Tip: Un-equip your Silver Sword so you don't constantly keep switching to it mid-combat.

South/South East of Devil's Pit (next to Hanged Man's Tree) is a place where nekkars spawn. Attack the nekkars with the steel Serpentine Sword and wait until you see "bleeding" and "poisoning" pop up (for me it did around 70-80 red damage), then use Igni and hope they light on fire. This literally took me 15 mins to get and I expected it to take longer than that.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PS4Trophies Guide:

PS4Trophies made a video guide on how to do it by killing wolves. For those not interested in watching the video, I'll write a written guide.

In the video he goes here:
External image

Which is in Skellige and has a pack of level 15 wolves. He just hacks away with the sword and when the effects pop up, he uses Igni to (hopefully) cause burning, After all wolves are dead, leave the area and then go back and do it again until you get the achievement.

The video:

Nah, that shouldn't make a difference. I know that those two achievements will take some extra kills until it unlocks. Sometimes the game just doesn't register the kills/headshots. I read multiple people say that it took them waaaay more kills until the achievement unlocked. Just expect a grind and keep at it.

Yeah actually surprised there isn't an oil that adds poison itself. And of course doesn't help the percentage tracker when looking at the cheevos doesn't work to count how many you have left to go.

By Foxfire49 on 20 Jun 2015 01:15
Did this after the story at lvl 35.
Made the serpentine steel sword and added 5% poison to it as well as using oil to add 15% more with the skill upgrade. Also had the bleeding fast attack skill upgrade.

I did however find it better to go to the lvl 15 wolves from the ps4trophies guide then any mobs around devils pit since they are so low lvl.

Thanks!

When the game first came out it was extremely buggy, so it's quite possible that it still is. I do know that equipment now counts towards it, so it should be working. Just keep trying and you'll eventually get it.

This does NOT stack among saves, right? Because I just now did it around 4 more times, then died. The save reloaded, I did it once and a half more (didn't get around to stacking all three effects) and then it unlocked. Bloody hell, so buggy. And so glad I'm done with it, it was seriously starting to ruin the game.

Sometimes I'll kill an enemy before poison even applies. Try taking off the bleeding skill and see if poison actually applies, if it does, just keep at it and you'll get all 3 eventually. You could try the skill that adds poison when you add oil to a sword though, I never used it, but it might help. Poison is the hardest to get since it has the lowest percentage.

I am only posting this solution as the solutions above did not help me at all but only due to the fact of my level.
If you're trying for this achievement at an earlier level, by all means follow the guides posted prior to this one as they will be better. This guide simply proved easiest for this achievement from level 35.

If you are struggling to get this achievement from a high level on weaker enemies, you wan't to do a few things.

- Build the Serpent Steel Sword that gives 15% chance to poison.(Add extra % from skill upgrade and runestone)

- Make sure in your Fast Attack skill tree you have upgraded the last ability in this section that basically allows every Fast Attack to cause bleeding.

- Make sure that once the weapon is built, unequip your silver sword and make sure that the Serpent Steel Sword is the only weapon equipped.(We will be using this weak steel sword on Monsters as it will do less damage)

- Make your way back to Kaer Morhen, you can fast travel to the Lakeside Hut.(Providing as a high level, you have got this far in the story and regained access to thie area.)

- Head your way North up the east coast and you will find a bunch(4-6)level 12 bears that can sustain a fair bit of damage and don't do much in return. Just attack them til you see Bleeding/Poisoning appear above their head then finish them off with Igni.

Repeat this process as many times as it takes til the achievement pops. If the bears have all died, fast travel out of the area(To another City)and come back to allow the bears to respawn.

A few steps from this guide are similar to the guides posted prior to this one, this guide is simply an update of how to get this achievement from a high level. Good luck!

Just a quick one, good guide seen as I'm level 34 but surely you would build the silver sword rather than steel because that does less damage on bears than steel. Non-human not monster.

Thank you all for the feedback, glad I could be of help. As for which sword to build, I was genuinely going by the instruction that Non-Human simply meant elves, lol and that Monsters just meant all creatures. Either way it worked, I guess. :-) For meditating, I don't think I tried to myself, by the time I found the spot with the bears, it only took the one trip to finish my achievement but good spot though.

It was almost guaranteed every time.

This is a tip for anyone who has a very high level (I was lvl 65). There is a spot on the East coast of Ard Skellig (big central island in The Skellige Isles) between Whale Graveyard and Redgill Fast Travel locations where a cyclops respawns every time you meditate. This cyclops has plenty of health to not die before you have the chance to put all three status effects on him. I used Devil's Puffball, Igni and Broadhead Bolt. If/when he dies you just meditate to get him back (along with any used bombs).

Did this on on 1/12/23, with a lev 53 char and the viper sword with greater morona socketed, igni and fully upgraded fast attack w/ bleed effect, but used them on the Cyclops mentioned in Atsumers comment above me. Worked after 10 Cyclops, who were lev 30 and respawned after 1 hour meditation. Follow the road South from the Whale Graveyard post and you'll run right into him.

Thanks this worked for me also at level 36 however I could never see poison working with the sword when I first tried, this took me a while but my method to make sure it worked was this:

Igni to make sure they catch on fire, once on fire toss a Devil's Puffball for poison so you are not relying on the sword and finally finish them off with sword attack which will cause bleeding!

Also something to note, not sure if glitched but for me every time I meditated the bears re-spawned, there was no need to fast travel etc, I meditated for 1 hour bears re-spawned.

cheers,

Go to The Devil's Pit because Humans are not immune to any of the status effects, they also respawn here when you leave the map.

Use bolts for bleeding, Devil's Puffball for poison and Igni to burn. Freeze them first with Axii to make it easier!

See my video below for help!

I wasted a lot of time with this trying to use runes on my sword and hoping all three 5% chances would line up. Once I figured this out it it took me 5 minutes:

Find an enemy, preferably something a bit stronger that won't die instantly. 1. Throw Devil's Puffball to poison it. 2. Igni. 3. The last ability perk under your fast attack grants automatic bleeding. Max that out and equip it. Use your sword, now he's bleeding while already poisoned and on fire.

If you want to do this crazy fast, as of now (6/12/15) there is a respawn bug on a cyclops next to the place of power along the eastern coast of Ard Skellig between Redgill and Whale Graveyard. Meditate for 2 hours and he instantly respawns. Found him, tried the above method, and the trophy popped on approximately the 10th try. Cyclops is level 30, I was 35 at the time. Also a good way to farm XP if you're falling short on level 35 for the Munchkin trophy.

I know there is a few solutions already up but I thought I'd share my solution since it's quite the easy one and is also a good way to level up. Just down of YUSTIANNA'S GROTTO in Skellige, there is a cyclop that can respawn every five seconds. You just need to meditate and He'll just spawn back. (Refer to my screenshot for the location)

External image

Note that the cyclop is level 21 but won't be a problem even if you'd be 5 levels below. The strategy is use AXII come close slash him with fast attack cn_X so Crippling Strikes Proc. If you don't have Cripple Strikes, use the Feline Silver Sword (it grants you 10% Chance to cause bleeding) make sure to enchant your weapon with Greater Morana runestone which will give you 5% Chance to poison. I'd recommend using Feline Silver Sword even though Viper Silver Sword gives you more chance to proc poison. I'd also suggest that you put 5/5 into Poisoned Blades with the extra 15% chance of poisoning the target on each hit when you use any oil. Back to the topic, once the target is mind-controlled just spam till you see the DOT (damage over time) over his head in red numbers for me it was around 233 every seconds then you switch to IGNI and burn him.

It sounds complicated but once you get the rotation running it's quite simple and you gain around 23 per kill as experience. I gained almost two levels by doing this achievement.

Thats my first guide, i hope its understandable. I know my english is not the best im from Austria sorry for that. I still hope it will help you.

Make sure you play on Death March difficulty otherwise the enemies die too quickly. To apply bleeding its best to use broadhead bolts, they got a 100% chance for bleeding. Devils Puffball bomb for poisoning and the Dancing Star bomb for burning. I did the achievement at the Banditcamp Devils Pit since there are many bandits and you have a safe spot. Just lure the enemies to you and go outside the first gate. They wont follow you, and line up but wont lose aggro so you got free fire. Broadhead bolts can be purchased from most Blacksmiths and the bomb formulars can be purchased from the herbalists hut in novigrad

31 May 2021 00:00

There are multiple ways of applying the three effects. This is how I managed to do so.

Before anything else, make a save point you can load back to.

Bleeding - Buy Broadhead Bolts from the Blacksmith in Oxenfurt. They apply the bleeding effect on hit for 15 sec.

Poisoning - Obtain and craft the Devil's Puffball. I recommend the Enhanced or Superior versions since the effect lasts for 30 sec but the Regular (10 sec) version work as well.

Burning - Use a potion of clearance to free up your ability points. Acquire Level 5 of the Ability Pyromaniac (last Ability of the Igni Sign) which gives 100% Burning effect to all Igni cast. Also get the Abilities Rage Management (General Branch) and Razor Focus (Combat Branch/Battle Trance Tree). This will allow you to use Adrenaline Points for Signs and have an Adrenaline Point at the beginning of combat. If you aren't a high enough level to get these abilities then use the Dancing Star Bomb instead. You can use regular Igni for this as well but its burning effect rate is fairly low so keep that in mind if going down that path.

Location - I recommend the bridge outside of Oxenfurt. It is directly to the left on the signpost labeled Novigrad Gate. There are usually two guards standing at the end of the bridge near the signpost. Simply pull out your sword and do a few slashes to provoke them. Once they begin to engage, lock onto one of them. Do the following in order: use Devil's Puffball, shoot the Broadhead Bolt, use Igni/Dancing Star. Due to the high level of the guards, you may just be able to do one guard before you die. The best part about this location is that if the guards "kill" you, you don't die but you lose money (Hooray for save points). You are simply knocked out and you get back up after a few moments. No loading screen wait. However, you must be killed by the guards for this to work. If you die from poison from the Devil's Puffball, you get throw to the loading screen. Once you recover from the knockout, repeat.

You should have a indication of what number you are at by the amount of times you refill your bombs. You should only need to refill twice if you are chaining the effects correctly.

This trophy is garbage. I've gone through this cycle forty times now. I've worked on the Cyclops on Ard Skellig, and South East Velen.

Edit 1: CD Project Red is amazing. I went to their support site, found trophies and followed their suggestion of turning off PS4 and unplugging once fully shutdown for at least thirty seconds. They stated that if you met the requirements that it should pop and if it didn't try again. I had to reload the save I left off of and attempted Overkill again. Only had to apply burning, poison, and bleeding once for it to pop.

A good method on earning this trophy is to use Broadhead Bolts (bleeding), Devil's Puffball Bombs (poisoning) ,and Dancing Star Bombs (burning). The Broadhead Bolts are available at most blacksmiths and have a 100% bleeding chance (each shot will always make enemies bleed for 15 seconds). The Devil's Puffball creates a poison cloud and the enemy must be standing inside the cloud to receive poison damage. The Dancing Star Bomb does burning damage and has a much higher chance of burning enemies than Igni (but it's possible with Igni, especially when you fully upgrade it). The two bomb formulae can be purchased at the Herbalist's Hut in Novigrad.

Once you have all these things head to the Devil's Pit Bandit Camp in Velen. Be sure to set the difficulty to Death March, otherwise they will die too quickly. Start by shooting the broadhead bolt, followed by the Devil's Puffball and then the Dancing Star Bomb. Stay very close to enemies so that they cannot run away from the poison cloud. The three effects must be active on one enemy at the same time. Repeat this 10 times. You can meditate to replenish your bombs. Fast travel to another map to make the bandits respawn.

You can also do this against most other human enemies, animals and several monster types. Some enemies are resistant to some of the three required effects, so not all enemies will work! Bandits, Bears, Wolves, Cyclopes and anything else without armor works best.

One of the best ways to get this achievement is to arm yourself with the following equipment: Broadhead Bolts (bleeding), Devil's Puffball Bombs (poisoning), and Dancing Star Bombs (burning).

The Broadhead Bolts are available at most Blacksmiths around Velen and Novigrad. Each bolt has a 100% bleeding chance and the effect will last for 15 seconds. The Devil's Puffball Bomb creates a poison cloud upon detonation, guaranteeing a 100% chance poisoning effect on any enemy within the cloud's radius. Lastly, the Dancing Star Bomb's main effect is to cause burning damage upon detonation; it has a 100% chance of burning enemies when compared to Igni.

If you're in need for both bomb types for the method detailed above, their formulae can be bought at the Herbalist's Hut in northeast Novigrad. Now that you're stocked with the proper equipment, head on over to the Devil's Pit Bandit Camp in Velen. It would be wise to set the difficulty to "Death March" if you're not already playing on this difficulty setting since enemies will die too quickly on the lower difficulties.

Start off by shooting a Broadhead Bolt at an enemy, then follow up with a Devil's Puffball Bomb and Dancing Star Bomb. Make sure to stay close to your enemy so they don't run outside of the poison cloud. If done correctly, all three effects should hit them at once. Now repeat this a few more times on different enemies within the Bandit Camp and because it will be necessary, leave the camp, meditate to replenish your supplies (bombs), fast travel to another region (i.e. Vizima), and then return to the camp so that the enemies can respawn and the grind can continue. Once you've pulled off the "overkill" combo ten times, this achievement will be yours.

For those who are too lazy to watch videos, I’ll tell you in three words. We put a dancing star bomb and a poisonous mushroom in our inventory. We craft or buy arrows that give a 100% chance of bleeding. We shoot from a crossbow and throw two grenades in a row. Trophy in your pocket.

Here, in my opinion, is a simpler way https://youtu.be/RYlsrENA1mc

Important point!! If you cause bleeding with a crossbow, do not use the Rogue Thunder bolt. Despite the fact that they cause bleeding, the effect of these bolts does not count towards your achievement. Use the "Wide Point Bolt". After fiddling around for 1.5 hours, I knocked out a trophy in 5 minutes on Skellige with two pirates, having just bought other bolts for the crossbow.

I didn’t succeed for a long time in the end: at level 36 I started the game+, bought a purification potion, pumped up the entire quick attack branch (you need pinning blows) and potions (poisoned blades). An excellent sword from the cat school with a quick strike would inflict poisoning and bleeding plus Igni or a bomb.

I don’t know what this is connected with, but according to the guide from PowerPyx it no longer works. Or maybe I'm just that unlucky.
Here's another way: Make a save in a separate slot. We buy a potion that removes all points and upgrade it stupidly to the “pinning blows” skill in order to 100% cause bleeding.
Next, we need to find expensive runes that cause burning with a 5% chance. If you have a sword with 3 sockets, then you are lucky, but if not, then complete the treasure quest, such a sword is often found there. As a result: we inserted 3 runes at 5% = 15%. And we go to this place https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rn-MFKvlJ5M
We hit until we cause a fire and immediately throw a bomb to poison them. I repeat, the chance of bleeding from the skill is 100%, so we just hit before the enemy burns.

All these devilish pits, etc., in my opinion, are too long and inconvenient.
Here's the fastest option

When setting enemies on fire, igni will not give you any achievements. You need to use an incendiary bomb.

The crossbow tooltip works. I just received a trophy like this. Look at the bolt, because for some reason mine was changed to a regular one at some point. Noticed after 30 kills.

The method with the Devil's Pit was not fixed as of June 10, 2017; I just got the achievement using this method. First he threw a poison bomb, then a fire bomb, and then a bolt with bleeding. 2 runs and the trophy is received

I confirm what Alex said, you need to use arrows with wide tips, a dancing star and a damn mushroom. There is a place on Skellige with 2 endlessly spawning pirates. I got the achievement in 15 minutes.

Knocked it out on a guard in the White Garden. He provoked him and then knocked out the trophy. The guard is level 29, so he doesn’t die quickly and you can do everything, even if you hesitate a little.

Can be completed in Toussaint, at Moncran Castle before the clearing.
We acquire the skills “Binding Blows” and “Whirlwind”.
We provoke all the enemies, huddle in a corner, and throw the Devil's Mushroom into the crowd. and then Dancing Star. Next, we chop everyone while holding the square.

Please note that in the new re-release of the Witcher Devil, the Pit can become a populated area with peasants
Most likely this is influenced by a quest from a nearby worshiper of the Eternal Flame

Skelige, Faroe Island, Trondheim village. There is a place where two pirates constantly respawn. Make one pass at them, they will of course die, then move a little to the side of the road and after 2 seconds they will appear again. When the bombs are over, we meditate and repeat. Knocked out the trophy in 5 minutes.

Performed on the same bear on Skelling, north-eastern island of Urialla, point Road to Ingvor's Fang. Devil's mushroom - poisoning, then the sign of Igni - fire and a couple of quick blows - bleeding. I returned to Velen and again to the bear.
