How to unlock the Assassin of Kings achievement in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Definitive Guide

This achievement is missable

Just to be clear to get this achievement you need to complete two quests: 'A Deadly Plot' and 'Reason of State' the first quest 'A Deadly Plot' will not DIRECTLY be followed by 'Reason of State' So After completing 'A Deadly Plot' you will need to continue the main questline!

Spoilers from this point!
I will divide this guide in two parts: Part one will focus on the first time in Novigrad, meeting Dijkstra and how to trigger the first quest 'A Deadly Plot'.
The second part will focus on the second time in Novigrad, finding Philippa and making the right dialogue choices with Dijkstra to trigger 'Reason of State'

Part One: 'A Deadly Plot'
While playing the main questline in Novigrad you will meet a man named Dijkstra. Dijkstra won't give 'A Deadly Plot' right away. Just play the main quest until you burn down the witch hunters prison. After this quest you will have a talk with Dijkstra, this talk does not matter. (So don't worry if he is pissed because you have not recovered his treasure) The important part is Triss asking you for help. Make sure you help her! (complete her side quests) After you have romanced Triss or have not. Dijkstra will ask you for help. Agree to help, this will trigger the quest 'A Deadly Plot'. This quest is Pretty easy. (Don't forget to play Thaler if you are going for Gwent stuff) Now when you finish the quest you will need to progress the main questline. So find Ciri, battle the Hunt at Kaer Morhen and go to Bald Mountain. After all this, you will return to Novigrad.

Part two: 'Reason of State'
When you return to Novigrad you will get the quest 'Final Preparations' this is a big quest with multiple objectives/side quests. When helping Triss find Phillipa your search will lead you to Dijkstra's bathhouse. After getting Philippa, Dijkstra will approach you and ask you to hand over Phillipa. You will need to solve this without violence. Dialogue needs to go: I need her > Tell you what the Emperor is after > Heard it from Emhyr himself > Let her talk. After this talk the quest 'Reason of State' will begin. This quest is also straightforward. Finish this quest and the achievement will be yours.

Your solution could use some detail. It seems to be true that A Deadly Plot is required and does need to be done before Ugly Baby, but from that point it's rather confusing. From what I gather from the video you linked and searching elsewhere, you will get another quest after completing more of the main story (after Ugly Baby) called Reason of State, and that's the quest line that gives you the achievement. A Deadly Plot may be a prerequisite for it, but the actual quest to get the achievement is much later.

I know it's pretty confusing but the first version of this guide was full of spoilers so I decided to edit it. Should I go back to full spoilers?

The most confusing part for me was that you didn't immediately get the next quest, Reason of State, after finishing A Deadly Plot, so I thought I'd missed it and was afraid to start Ugly Baby.

Perhaps give a spoiler free version first that says generally what needs to be done, quest names, when you have to wait, etc, but that doesn't give any plot specific details. Then give a full detailed versin ith spoilers (after warning people) for the people that want to know eveything upfront. Or you could use teh spoliers tag to hide key details. I've seen both used in solutions before.

No votes yet, just wanted to pass along that I did the Thaler questline today, and there was no option for me to play Gwent with him.

Sooooo, played through the assassination 3 times thinking sine i died midway through killing him maybe it got bugged, but didnt pop at all.

About 2 hours later it unlocked while watching youtube donald duck carroons with my kids. Tracker never said unlocking but no idea whether it was a tracker issue or the game. I assume the tracker strikes again. Will ms ever fix this garbage.

Just figured id post my findings here for others in the same boat, just move on... Youre most likely good.

I thought the achievement glitched like everyone else mentioned here, but I later realized that it unlocked without giving me the achievement unlocked notification. Also, the achievement is suppose to unlock after the cutscene were

Like some others have noted on my first attempt I didn't get the achievement. I reloaded the checkpoint just before the fight, and again it didn't pop. I did a hard reset and on my third attempt it popped okay. So it might be the reset, but another idea I had is because the achievement pops in the cut scene to not skip through it. I read the sub titles faster than they are spoken so have a habit of skipping ahead and I wondered if that skipped the trigger or something. May not help anyone, but an idea to try for anyone else who gets stuck

You have to do a series of length side quests to trigger the "Reason of State" side quest at the end of the game. During "Reason of State" you will then automatically assassinate King Radovid as part of the quest.

If you miss one of the required side quests before going to the Isle of Mists, you cannot trigger "Reason of State" anymore. If you make a wrong dialogue choice during the "Blindingly Obvious' main story question you will miss it, too. Be sure to always choose the first dialogue option at the end of this quest when talking to Dijkstra and Philippa.

The necessary quests are all found in Novirgrad. They are as follows:
1. Redania's Most Wanted
2. An Eye for an Eye
3. A Matter of Life and Death
4. Now or Never
5. A deadly plot
6. Reason of State
7. [Main Quest] Blindingly Obvious

Be sure to do them as soon as they become available to you. The first four start automatically as part of the main story (track them in your side quests). A Deadly Plot becomes available immediately after doing the previous mission Now or Never for Triss. The last two will then trigger automatically

Before the solution for this achievement is presented, it must be stated right now that this is a HIGHLY MISSABLE achievement.

During your playthrough, you will need to complete a number of side quests throughout Act I in order to trigger the "Reason of State" side quest towards the very end of the game in Act III. During this aforementioned quest, you will then automatically assassinate King Radovid as part of the quest's objective. If you miss one of the required side quests in Act I before sailing to the Isle of Mists, you will not be able to trigger "Reason of State" and you'll miss this achievement. Further, if you speak out and make the wrong dialogue choice during the main quest entitled "Blindingly Obvious," you will miss triggering the side quest. To prevent that, make sure you choose the FIRST dialogue option every time it's Geralt's turn to speak when talking to Dijkstra and Philippa inside the Bathhouse.

As mentioned, there are five side quests and one main quest that must be completed in order to trigger "Reason of State." Check below:

  • An Eye for an Eye
  • Redania's Most Wanted
  • A Matter of Life and Death
  • Now or Never
  • A Deadly Plot
  • Blindingly Obvious [Main Quest - Remember to choose the FIRST dialogue option each time Geralt speaks]

With this in mind, make sure to complete these side quests as soon as they're available. If you require assistance in figuring out the requirements to trigger each quest, please refer to the video below. Once "Reason of State" has been completed, and Radovid has been slain, this achievement will finally be yours.

When in the story we go together with Triss to save Philippa, after the fight during a conversation with Dykstra, do not push him away, but leak information to him about Emhyr’s plans.

The “matter of national importance” mission will be available after rescuing Philippa from the baths (don’t miss the story one), if you share the information with Dijkstra, he will call you to discuss the murder itself, and at the end you will be given an achievement.

I’ll add on my own behalf the Mission “Matters of National Importance” will be available after the battle in Kaer Morhen. Then you return to Novigrad, and then you save Filipina in the baths, and I repeat, during the conversation with Dykstra you hand over Emhyr.

In version 1.10 I encountered a bug:
Radovid's last two bodyguards take no damage. Can't take the trophy(

Rebooting before starting the quest (before meeting Radovid on the ship) helped. Transfer to the White Garden and back to the ship.

Achievmet can be skipped!

In Novigrad, as you progress through the story, Dijsktra will ask you for help to save a spy. The spy will be our old friend Thaler.

Further, much later, almost at the very end of the game, when we save Philippa Elhart, we need not to push Dijkstra away, but to share information with him. This will start the quest "Matters of National Importance". After completing it (and making a difficult moral choice), you will receive an achievement.
