How to unlock the Fiend or Foe? achievement in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Definitive Guide
There might be some grammar errors so I apologize in advance.
This is a witcher contract that can be obtained from Odhen of Rannvaig named NPC who is located in a village Rannvaig in the Skellige Isles. You will get this contract started also by accepting a notice board notice of this contract. *Contract name is MISSING SON*
Suggested lvl for this contract is lvl 29 but I managed to complete this as I was only lvl 25. I did have some good gear though but I am sure that at this part of the game, you will also have some very good gear etc. The name of this contract is *Missing Son*
The monster of this contract is a Fiend called Morvudd. So it has a Fiend fighting style that you have to keep in mind: ramming attacks, large sweeps and deadly blows. I personally used only heavy armor gear, decent weapons, Igni sign and Swallow potion + food. Morvudd did some heavy damage to me with it's every blow so I suggest to dodge more often than tanking damage.
Bestiary says that Morvudd is vulnerable against these: Sanum and Devil's Puffball bombs and Relict oil. I suggest just in case to craft these and use them for getting that extra edge for the fight.
Here is the walkthough how I personally completed this contract. You can complete this in a different way I believe:
1. I accepted this contract from the notice board that was located in a Rannvaig village.
2. Then in a heed of mind, I didn't talk to Odhen at all but instead randomly left from the village and head south towards some huge castle ruins that are located just north of village called Boxholm.
3. There, in these particular ruins I encountered Morvudd and the monster life bar suddenly appeared in my tv screen. The fight had started.
4. When the monster had around 25% health left, it's center eye started to glow with a red light around it and suddenly I was hypnotized for 20 seconds. Looks likely this is a part of the contract because the monster fleed from the battle back to it's lair.
5. I used witcher senses as commanded, to track down this monster towards it's lair. The lair was located in village of Boxholm.
6. There a second fight began againts this beast but this time it did have a full health in start. I eventually killed the beast, used witcher sense in it's lair, located a body without a torso and returned to Odhen to tell that he's sons have died.
7. After the conversation my achievement unlocked. Hopefully yours will too !
LEVEL 29 Recommended.
Friend or Foe starts in the Skellige Isles. The place you want to head to is called Rannvig if you have managed to find the maps sold by merchants you should have unlocked this fast travel point by using them, there are 4 maps in total so keep an eye out for them or do a quick google if you are yet to find them to find out who sells them. There are several merchants that sell them as i had all 4 and still found merchants selling them afterwards.
Once in Rannvig head to the notice board and pick up the Missing Son contract, this is the contract needed for this trophy. Once picked up from the notice board and the Missing Son Quest selected from the Contracts head to the location on the map but just before you get there you will want to apply Relict oil or the enhanced version if you have it to your silver sword, you will also want to select the SAMUM bomb and Devils Puffball bomb or again an enhanced version if you have them. Make sure you do this before the fight because it will not allow you to once the fight has started. You should be able to see your foe and back off to be able to ready your self without him attacking.
It is a Fiend you are fighing if you wish to check up the Beastary about it.
Pick a Decoction that suits your battle style also. The Fiend decoction doesn't really do anything to help with the battle it just allows you to carry more items past your weight limit.
2 good potions are Thunderbolt and Swallow again you can get enhanced/superior versions of these.
Head in to the building area that is almost like an arena and fight him for the first time, don't worry when the screen goes black when you beat him this is just their way of making him vanish to his lair which you need to find using your witcher senses. Make sure to grab the 4 loot parcels at the back corner for some nice diagrams etc then head off using your senses to see which way he ran.
Before you do this would be a good time to meditate so you can get your health back and fill your bombs and potions up again ready for the next battle.
Remember though this will mean you will need to apply oils again and use decoctions as meditation can clear the use of them so just check on that before you go further.
Once you have done this you are ready so keep using your witcher sense until you find him and as soon as you do use your QUEN sign and then use your bombs and potions and get in there and hit him hard. When your QUEN has been blown get out the way and apply it again. Once the fight is over remember to loot him and then use your senses in the lair to find the dead son.
Once you have found him head back to Odhen who you will find in Rannvaig where you got the contract.
If you need help finding anything just check the video out. Once you speak to Odhen you will get the trophy.
Good luck and happy gaming
This achievement is obtained for completing the contract entitled “Missing Son,” which can be found on the notice board in Rannvaig, a village on the main island of Skellige (Ard Skellig). It is recommended to hold off on this contract until you are a Level 29 or higher.
Though the quest itself is rather straightforward, the monster in question for this contract is definitely one of the toughest you’ll have to fight. Like the Woodland Spirit, it has an incredibly high damage threshold and can kill Geralt in 1-2 hits. With this in mind, combat against the Morvudd should look like this: dodge the monster’s attacks to the left every single time, then use one (no more than one) strong attack and repeat. Also, keep in mind that you should use Relic Oil on your silver sword, stock up on Samum Bombs, and constantly cast the Quen Sign when facing off against the Morvudd.
Once the monster has been slain during the “second” encounter, collect a trophy from its corpse, check out its lair nearby for the contract issuer's "missing son," and then return to Rannvaig to collect your reward and unlock the achievement.
To earn this trophy, you must play the "Contract: Missing Son" Side Quest (Recommended Level: 29+). It can be started at the notice board in Rannvaig, a village on the main island of Skellige. The quest is fairly straight forward, yet no easy task at all. You must fight one of the strongest monsters in the game, called "Morvudd". You must defeat it twice in a row, as it will run away the first time you fight it.
The basic strategy for this fight is to dodge Morvudd's attacks to the left at all times, then use one single strong attack and repeat. This way you can keep going around the enemy in circles and if you get the timing down the boss will hardly ever hit you while you deal some devastating blows. Also use Relic Oil on your silver sword for bonus damage and bring some Samum bombs.
Keep your Quen Sign active at all times, otherwise you may get instant-killed by the enemy. Once you've defeated Morvudd for the second time, you must investigate its lair and return to the quest giver. This will complete the Missing Son quest and unlock the trophy.
