How to unlock the When It's Many Against One… achievement in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Definitive Guide

Missable achievement, comes late in the DLC, after you repair all the memories of Iris von Everec, so do not worry that the first enemies count towards this achievement, they do not.

After you repair the last memory, where you put the bowls in place, you will be transfered to a fireplace-lit hallway, where a specific enemy will attack you. This is the nightmare the achievement is talking about. There are 6 enemies in total and 5 of them are in dormant state. To wake them up, simply attack them with your sword.

As The Mankey pointed out: I had issues trying to strike the dormant guys with a sword. I would miss them several times and be almost dead by the time I got all them hit. Found it was way easier to run way back right away and throw bombs at them. If placed right it should only take 2 to hit them all. Also, keeps you from being right next to them when they wake up.

When all of them are awoken, strike them like a group with your heavy attack, then roll away, prefferably with your shield turned on, as some enemies from the group can do a quick attack, that takes A LOT of health and you want to spare those Swallows to the next part of the fight.

Striking them with your heavy attack has 2 main advantages. You can hit many of them with one swing and they will have approximately the same health when you attack them evenly, so you will have less pain in the second part of the fight. Igni does not work, it only stuns them, I tried.

When you are low on health and there are 4 or more enemies, use food, not Swallow and keep your distance, they do not have any long range attacks at this point of the fight.

They have one lifebar at the top of the screen, but each of them has their own (a couple of 1000s) health. I also used 2 potions, that gave some health back to me when I attacked and took some of their health as they attacked me to make it super-easy.

When you kill 3 of them, their attack pattern will change a bit, so roll heavily and cast a protective shield now and then with some attacking of course. Their attack will wear them down after some time and they will rest on the floor, this is when you must do heavy damage.

This was hard for me. Even on Just the Story!

There is a further letter to read after putting the bowls in place. Also here's my advice when playing on Death March: change the difficulty down for the chieve :) This is the only time I had to do that, which saddened me a bit I must say but couldn't take that many big hitters at the same time.

Jesus. On "Just the story," I die in less than a minute. Nothing is working here.

It feels like with the update they've made this a lot easier. Maybe I was just having a good day but I struggled around 10 times a few days ago and done it on my first attempt today after the update, and they felt easier/slower

I just want to point out that Igni works fine on them. For some reason damage numbers rarely pop up but they are definitely getting hurt. Even better, if you use the alternate mode of Igni (Firestream), the enemies will teleport directly in front of you and be shut down before they can attack regardless of what attack they are trying to do.

just a quick bit of info, but get them bunched up then throw a dancing star into them, they all stand there burning doing nothing allowing you to just strike them down easly, i did this on death march

This achievement is trivial on 'Just the Story' difficulty. Hit them all, throw a Dancing Star when they're grouped together as others have suggested then hit them all at once and his health will go down very quickly.

Can attest to the Dancing Star strategy, playing on death march and used superior grapeshot to 'awake' all the enemies then used superior dancing star to keep them from moving/attacking and just wailed on them till they died.

This wouldn't be such a pain if the load times were not evil. I keep getting them low on health and then when they change their attack pattern, they kill me in seconds. Any advice?

I did it twice and no achievement popped :(
Could it be because I hit the 1st guy before the others??

Took me about 8 tries. It feels to me like the first one walking needs to be the last to die. The final animation was different the time the achievement popped. When i was down to 2 one of them turned red and froze. I killed the other one first and then attacked the red frozen guy. A couple swings and the animation started, the story continued and the achievement popped. I also cleared my blu ray cache as suggested in another solution (restart xbox, clear cache, start up game - clearing with game open a couple tries earlier didn't help).

Edit to add: the time it worked i awoke all 6 with crossbow before swinging my sword/using a sign for the first time.

If this achievement doesn't pop, hard reset your xbox, clear your persistent storage and reload a save. You'll get it then.

Took 3 trys. If you're doing it on death March don't feel discouraged. Use Quen and whatever decoctions best suit your style. I had mastercrafted bear school armor and was level 35. My only advice is do not go into this unprepared. If you never made decoction or never upgraded potion this fight will probably be tough.

Also don't get over confident. These guys will instant drop your health one a wrong move. Roll often. Gain distance and Swing, they'll likely run right into it.

This and Curator of Nightmares would not unlock for me. Love this game, but it has a whole pole of glitched achievements :(

Seems like this achievement is just as glitchy as the wedding activities one. Tried it twice so far and no go. Wedding activities one took me reloading 5 times.....wish they would fixed the glitched achievements on this game.

I wish I could give this a positive, as it really deserves it. I just did this on Death March and is achievable, but frustrating. This fight can take an hour or be only a couple minutes. After they begin to get weak I took a Thunderbolt potion and got aggressive. For me they began the more powerful attacks when there was four remaining. I was easily able to dispatch two of those four before they started the powerful attack. I was only left with two which was manageable. The heavy attack tip was AWESOME, this would have been a huge headache if they were not already weakened prior to starting that powerful attack.

I found this achievement very difficult until I discovered the Whirl ability completely destroys the phantoms. Be sure to have Whirl equipped before the fight starts. Use Igni to attack the inactive phantoms. Meleeing them doesn't work very well because they aren't targetable while they are inactive. When they are all active and attacking you, unload on them with Whirl. It took me under a minute to kill them.

What difficulty were you playing on because I get hit every time during whirl and if I get hit again before rolling away I'm dead! Your solution suggests they can't fight back, or that they don't hurt you enough to be any bother. In any case this isn't a solution for everyone and it's worth mentioning to avoid any misunderstandings. Thanks for the idea anyway it was worth a try.

Whirl is the best tip for death march. I rolled backward twice, threw devils puffball bombs (hold the button to aim) to wake multiple enemies at once (the bombs and poison effect don't actually hurt the enemies very much). If any are left awake, start rolling around the group to try herding them together and use a quen shield blast to wake any remaining enemies. Northern wind can help to group them, but they don't stay frozen very long. Once they are basically grouped, I found that igniting them with dancing star stops them from moving the longest because they will panic when set on fire so throw bomb into group, activate quen, roll forward and whirl until they break your shield, then roll away and repeat. I had to repeat that process twice to kill them all, but after trying everything, this was the best combo.

Use the CROSSBOW to awake all 5 sleepy enemies one by one. Then use some Quen and health potions on the "Just the story" difficulty. And make sure that you dont kill any of them before you can see all of them walking after you. Easy!

IF HAVING TROUBLE UNLOCKING

I had tried several attempts trying to unlock this achievement and it didn't until I decided to clear my persistent storage under "Disc & Blu-ray>Blu-ray>Persistent Storage".

After clearing, this achievement popped immediately after killing all 6 enemies at once.

**Missable**

This is part of the main quest "Scenes From a Marriage".

After restoring the memories, follow the spirit's instructions and go to the parlor. Check out the note on the table and it will bring you into an arena with a fireplace to face off against a nightmare.

There are 6 nightmares in total, 5 of which are inactive. You will need to wake them up by attacking them with a sign or your weapon. Once all six are active, you will need to defeat them. Use your potions and signs to help you out, and if needed, lower the difficulty as it can be a very difficult fight.

Once all nightmares are defeated, you will be back in the palor and the trophy will unlock.

This achievement is obtainable during the quest entitled "Scenes From a Marriage" and is highly missable.

Once you restore the final memory inside the estate's dining room, meditate to replenish your supplies and make an extra save file. Now adhere to the spirit's advice and proceed into the parlor. Interact with the note on the table and you'll soon find yourself in a large, fireplace-lit arena, facing off against Iris' greatest fear. You'll notice that there's only one nightmare here to fight, as the other five are in a "dormant state."

For the purposes of this achievement, you need to agitate the other five nightmares by casting Igni of them (or striking them). This will "wake them up," forcing you to face off against all six nightmares at once. This can be an incredibly difficulty feat if playing on "Broken Bones" or "Death March!" since the nightmare's are relentless with their whirl-like attack patterns. As a humble recommendation, do not be ashamed to lower the difficulty if you find yourself struggling too much. In terms of the actual fight, it goes without saying that you should prioritize Quen when your stamina allows it, as well as rolling away from your aggressor's attacks and using Thunderbolt Potions, Tawny Owl Potions, and a mixture of both Swallow and White Raffard as well.

Once all the nightmares have been slain, you will be transported back to the parlor and the achievement will unlock. If you failed to provoke the additional five nightmares during the fight, make use of that extra save file you made earlier!

The trophy is easy to miss.
In the Iris estate there will be a final battle with the shadows of Olgerd, which are fears, it will not be possible to provoke all fears at the same time, the main thing is not to kill one of them, while you are trying to distract inactive fears and you can kill them only when they everyone will chase you, the Aard sign (telekinetic strike) helped a lot

In addition to the video, I would like to recommend: after defeating the crowd of Olgerds with a dancing star and using thunder, it is very smart to use the whirlwind, especially if you go through on the last difficulty. Two passes and the achievement is yours.

It’s easy to provoke them right at the very beginning of the battle with an alternative Aard. use it once and they all run after you

You can also improve the skill of slowing down time on a crossbow while aiming and quickly activate everyone. An explosive bolt can hit several at once.

To get this trophy, you must aggro all opponents in this battle. Set the difficulty to minimum (I tried it on “To Death”, I don’t recommend it to anyone), and hit them with Aard to aggro (while they are not active, it’s difficult to hit them with a sword). Once you aggro the whole pile, start throwing everything you can.
