How to unlock the Best General achievement in They Are Billions - Definitive Guide
Tips:
- Besides the very early expansion and exploration phase keep your rangers in a tower 100% of the time. It's quite hard to get a soldier killed, but rangers die easy.
- As soon as you can build an army focus on soldiers.
- Do not go map clearing until you have a force of 30 soldiers and 10 snipers (ensure you set target selection to "highest threat"). This force is nigh indestructable, you would have to do something stupid to get them killed.
- Use radar/scout towers, and get the beholder wonder as soon as possible. Do not expand into unknown territory once you start to reach the more dangerous edges of the map as you can easily trigger an overwhelming rush on your troops.
- The lack of towers means that Thanatos becomes an essential member of your defense from the mid point of the game.
- Once you have your army of 40 soldiers and 10 snipers you can focus on sniper production to man the walls of your defenses. Keep those snipers in towers the whole time (and backed up by 1 or 2 thanatos towards the end-game) and you will have no problems whatsoever.
- Keep your borders covered by snipers housed in towers (I find 2 snipers per tower sufficient to fend off wandering infected throughout the game). Infected civilians don't count as a casualty for this achievement, but if you let the infected through you will likely end up sacrificing someone in your army to salvage the game!
- As soon as you can build ~5 Titans. 5 Titan's are enough to pretty much handle any wave you'll face until the very end with a bit of backup. 8 Titan's can face down any wave without any backup.
- In between waves add the 5 Titans to your 40+10 army and aggressively clear the map, if you are suffering casualties with this army then you are the problem I'm afraid.
- When the waves come, reposition your army into towers, throw up some new walls just incase, lay some spike traps and park your Titans in front of the wall. The swarm shouldn't even get within touching distance of your Titans.
- Try to have a few squads of 4/5 Titans ready for the final wave, they are fast enough to reactively reposition at the hotspots. These should be the only troops you have who are not stationed in a tower. Keep them outside your walls, they can intercept entire waves to take the pressure off an overloaded choke point if necessary, and if things go bad they are fast enough to run away from the horde.
The first half of the game is the hardest, once you have a decent force under your command exploration becomes pretty safe as long as you keep an eye on things. The lack of attack towers should not be an issue as long as you have enough Thanatos to cover your defenses & provide the AoE support while your snipers focus on the high value targets.
