How to unlock the Finders Keepers achievement in Thief - Definitive Guide

Once again, it looks like Powerpyx has captured all the locations of the secret areas. Thankfully, it looks like they've been done in the natural order you'd discover them. I haven't finished them all yet, but the comments look pretty positive from others that have,
A couple of tips.
- You must play each chapter to its end
- You must visit them all and get the "chime", even if you think you've been there before.
I've also included a link to a series of speedrun video's . All credit to Moti Grind, as his commentary is very helpful, but more importantly, he's included how to get back to each chapter start point. Very useful if you've already completed it.

*** Edit. Can confirm it works, as it's just popped for me.

It popped on #71, I was convinced it wasn't going to and I'd have to do it again lol, great guide.

Am I right in thinking if you're doing a full loot included playthrough you'll easily get this?

Cheers guys:
@ Chris 1984uk: I'm not convinced all secret areas had loot, so you may miss one by accident. Best follow it verbatim, as clearly it works bud :)

One playthrough, not multiple playthroughs, but since 100% the game takes more than one play through i would suggest doing this on your, 'easy,' playthrough. unless your a beast who just goes for the custom shot right away, you can wander the streets and replay everything after you beat the last level which makes a lot of achievements a breeze, if you so wish to wait to get them. :)

Did anyone else have a hard time getting the chime to happen at the last secret area in chapter 4? I replicate the video but the mechanical sound never happens.

I'm probably the only one with this glitch, hidden area on falling walkway chap 4, the game pauses for a sec once I land on walkway, can't hit swoop, just falls. I tried to crouch, stand, run, walk as slow as shit, left side, right. doesn't matter. I sent a contact info for them to call me about this glitch, hopefully it gets fixed. can't try for other a achievements since it involves a new game and no way am I doing all areas again

swoop didn;t work on the collapsing bit. You need to move, stop, move, stop etc. to stop it collapsing. Check Makkas guides, he shows/explains how to do it,

I'm a little confused and hoping somebody knows -- when it comes to getting the achievement with "ONE PLAY THRU" what does that mean exactly? Can you re-run the chapters to find missing secret areas?

I have two saves; one has 72/73 Secret areas and the other 63/73 (It was driving me nuts so I broke down and bought the Thief Companion app to see the stats).

If I re-load one of these and follow the guide and get the "chime" for each will I in fact get the achievement?

Or do I have to start a new game and play it thru?

Thanks for any help!

Yes, you can reload chapters to get this. Excellent guide saved me hours of heartbreak. I was missing the sewer tunnel in Chapter 6 (Number 22). You can drain the water and get the treasure from this area but unless you actually drop down into the sewer it doesn't count the secret area.

I personally did a full loot play through (missed a few in the city), so i followed the guide for the city secret areas, and then did as morrigan suggested, loaded up ch 6 loot #22 and it unlocked for me! hopefully morrigan's info can help others aswell! certainly helped me!

Word of advice... Don't bother with the wrench until level 3 and buy 2 rope arrows prior to level 2 instead if you are going for this. You need 2 ropes for the secrets in level 2 and I only had (or it may have been none as I think I may have found one in level)
Either way, i'm bummed as this will need to wait for second playthrough now...

quick question... if i missed a secret area and went back and got it on a second playthrough, do I have to complete the level for it to register/save or can I just exit back to the city?

So long as you here the chime it registers, and the achievement will pop as soon as you get the last one.

It should be noted that if you have previously gotten ALL Collectables AND ALL loot thieving challenges(-for the main story) then you can skip to 18:22 for all the city secrets.

A couple of things to point out from my game:

- I didn't get a chime on 3 secret's on Chapter 7
- I didn't get the 1st chime on Chapter 8.
- I got chimes for areas I'd been to before in The City.

I would recommend doing all The City ones first, saving after every chime and then do the chapter ones. At least if you don't hear a chime in the chapter, you'll know which one(s) you're potentially missing.

For anyone wondering about chimes, on my play through there were several separated periods where chimes would just not happen despite re-loading or restarting the game. I'd say a good 10 or so of my secret areas didn't give me a chime but I still got the achievement.

There were a few occasions for me when the chimes just stopped. A couple of times in free roam in the city and a couple of times in actual chapters. When it happened in free roam in the city, I went back to the tower and when I revisited the hidden area, I was able to get the chime.

When it happened within a chapter, I would try reloading saves and checkpoints to no avail. Only by restarting the chapter was I able to get the chime to sound when I entered the hidden area. I was not taking any chances on this achievement so I did not progress without getting the chime to sound.

Guys. If you don’t hear a chime as stated before just keep moving forward. Don’t worry. I went through an area between the 60th to the 70th secret area where I didn’t hear a chime. I was nervous and worried that it’s not counting and debated starting all over but instead decided to try to keep going following the guide. Achievements popped after the 73rd in South Quarter. Achievements done. Thief done. 5/16/2021

This worked a treat, mate! Thanks for this. I popped the achievement when I hit number 68, and had only missed 3 of the previous ones (but I still went to all the places in the video just in case!).

I finished the game and went back to find all the secret areas following the video then did the city and guess what no achievement FUCK MY LIFE angry.
So I started a new game blew through the chapters up to 6 then did the city once done with that I finished chapter 7 and 8 and got the achievement.
Goes fairly fast if you start knocking everyone out and not grabbing much loot or collectables.
So is this achievement glitchie? Where you have to find all secret areas before finishing the game is the question. roll

Question - I am on chapter 8, but don't think I have all the city secret areas. Can I finish ch8 and then go to the city, or should I return to the city before finishing chapter 8?
Appreciate any help.

Kingjamerscore, that's a great question. For example, if you do all of the secret areas in one chapter but somehow miss a collectible and have to replay to get the collectible, do you also need to do all of the secret areas in that chapter again? I think you do, and I'll explain why.

What I do know for sure is that once you find a secret area in the city, you don't have to find it again. I know this because the achievement unlocked for me after I discovered one secret area I had somehow always missed, and I didn't have to redo all of the secret areas in the city, just that one. My observation from this is that secret areas in the city work on the same principle as loot and rope arrows - once they're done, they're done forever. So, by this logic, I suspect that all the secret areas in the chapters must be redone any time you replay them, because each chapter's loot and rope arrows always reset every time you begin it.

Before I start I am going to say that you must complete the entire level for the secrets to fully stick and save to your game, I confirmed this myself. And don't skip any of the ones that you think you already got, even if you know you have them, just go back and be thorough, the easiest way to get messed up on big tasks like this is to think you already did something, let me tell you, it isn't fun having to do it all over again.

After a wee bit of a wait you guys finally are able to figure out how to get all those durned secret areas. And this is a whopping 48 minute video too, so get comfy, we gon' be doing this for a while.

I would suggest opening up the video in youtube to read the description, but I will say this much here, a secret area is found when you hear a metallic sound, you'll know it when you hear it. When you find an area, MANUALLY save the game right away, some times you have to interact with an item first for the secret area to count, do what the video says to the letter.

Prologue: 0
Chapter 1: 0
Chapter 2: 7
Chapter 3: 5
Chapter 4: 4
Chapter 5: 5
Chapter 6: 5
Chapter 7: 4
Chapter 8: 2
The City: 41

Big thanks to PowerPyx for taking the time to upload the video.

It costs money (£1.99 in UK) but bizarrely the Thief iOS companion app does pull number of secret areas found into the stats - even though it doesn't say which they are it does at least give you a total.

The trophy that will make the difference between whether you can earn this game's platinum or not. This trophy requires you to access all of the secret areas in this game, both the ones located in story chapters as well as the ones throughout the City (there aren't any in Client missions). Secret areas basically refer to (but not limited to) any hidden pathway that is accessed by prying open a previously inaccessible hidden window via a rope arrow, or crawling through a duct by unscrewing vent covers. Although often at times you will see a +New Map notification on the top right corner screen when you enter these secret areas, secret areas are not restricted to these locations. Every time you enter a secret area, you should hear a "chime" play in the background; serving as an indicator that you found a secret area. Take note that the chime will play every time you enter a secret area, whether you've been to it previously or not. Furthermore, whereas any secret areas you find in the City can be be saved right away via quick saving, secret areas found in story chapters, in order for them to add to your total you must complete the chapter all the way through to the end.

There are a total of 73 secret areas to be found in Thief. Unfortunately, there is no way to track exactly which secret area(s) you've already been in within the game. You can however if you choose to do so, purchase the official Thief Companion App (iOS or Android) to take note of how many secret areas you have found so far (why this app has a tracker for secret areas but the actual game does not, we don't know). Keep in mind that the app only keeps track of the total amount of unique secret areas you have found; it does not tell you which one exactly you are missing. As such, it comes down to a process of elimination and looking through every possible route there is in the game. The horrible in-game map design in this game also does not help in making things easier.

Number of secret areas in each story chapter and City:

Prologue: 0
Chapter 1: 0
Chapter 2: 7
Chapter 3: 5
Chapter 4: 4
Chapter 5: 5
Chapter 6: 5
Chapter 7: 4
Chapter 8: 2
The City: 41 Total: 73

Please refer to these maps in your trek for finding all of the game's secret areas, compiled and created by the wonderful people of TrueAchievements (also thanks to Swotam for going through the trouble of providing us a cached and downloadable copy of these maps): THIEF Maps

Note that in the process of finding all of the secret areas in this game, you will most likely find most if not all the loot and collectibles throughout the City. However, if you don't, it does not necessary mean you're missing an area within the City. When I unlocked this trophy, I was still missing around 10 loot in the City, a few documents, and one or two loot in each story chapter. If you're making sure to follow the maps linked above and made sure you've been into each listed secret area, you should be able to unlock this infuriating trophy.

For those of you who prefer a video guide, see this great video by PowerPyx:

There are a total of 73 secret areas to be found throughout the story missions and The City. Unfortunately there is no in-game way to track how many you have visited and the only indication that you have found one is a 'chime' that will play when you enter a secret area. Thanks to PowerPyx we now have a complete video guide to all 73 secret areas. Follow along with this video and you should have no problem unlocking both "Hidden Agenda" and "Finders Keepers".

This is the most frustrating and bugged achivement in the game. Secret areas are hidden places that play a chime sound effect when entered. Best way to do it is to create a new save and go through them all, because you cannot tell wich ones you entered already and wich not. There also is no statistic or way of checking your progress on the achievement.

Here is video of all secret areas in order:

Keep in mind that this achievement is bugged. Every time you enter secret location and there is no chime in the backgorund it is not considered as being found. From my expierience loading saves causes this so try to avoid it as much as you can. There are some fixes for when you don't hear the chime:

- If it's during any chapter try loading last save, if it doesn't help you got to restart the entire chapter (Press esc and choose "return to the city").

- If it's in the city you got to load last save and do any chapter and finish it to "reset the city" then try again.

ps I don’t recommend the above-mentioned application for smartphones/tablets, thief companion, not only is it not worth the money (169 rubles), but it also shows some kind of flaw in the statistics that does not correspond to the actual data.

Just won a trophy without collecting a single newspaper

0
By Joel815 on 17 Jun 2020 21:56
The fact that you need to collect newspapers seemed very important to me. Let me explain how it works: there are some newspapers that only appear between certain chapters. So the trick is that it is these newspapers that go for hiding places, i.e. if you came to a place where there was a newspaper and you did not read it, and now it is not there (in this place), then the game may not count this cache for you. Next I write a list of newspapers that appear between certain chapters:

Between 2 and 3:
Don't let your imagination run wild!
The Great Disappearance!
The Carnival Ship is aground!

Between 3 and 4:
Quack poultices!
Thieves of Riverside!

Between 4 and 5:
Fires of revolution!
Riots in Dayport!
Manhunt!

In all caches you need to take some kind of item, except for 2. In the video in the hint from DEOSS77, this is No. 9 in chapter 3 and No. 22 in 6. If you (like me, purely for yourself) collected 100% of the loot in all missions and in the city and did not receive the trophy, then it is necessary:
1. Find the starting point for Chapter 3 in the city and replay it, passing through cache No. 9, as well as all the caches in this chapter;
2. After completing chapter 3 and returning to the tower, you need to start chapter 6 and turn off the water in the garden and jump into the sewer
This will be the last cache without loot and trophy

The problem is that the number of caches (secret zones) found is not displayed in the statistics.

Save the game manually after each zone found, the game does not do this automatically and if you reboot earlier, you will have to search for the caches again.

Here is a video, in the description there is a timeline for each zone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRRsyXv9Vbg
