How to unlock the Hard Times achievement in Thief - Definitive Guide

The achievement is unlocked when you complete a game on Master or Custom Master difficulty. In other words, start a new game. Select master difficulty as the game's mode. Optionally, choose custom modifiers to the master difficulty. Finish the game. The achievement will unlock when you complete Chapter 8, the final chapter.

Important: Since playing on master custom difficulty stacks with playing on master difficulty, it is best to combine this achievement with the following one. Otherwise, you would need an additional playthrough.
THIEFSomething to ProveThe Something to Prove achievement in THIEF worth 613 pointsFinish the game with a custom difficulty of 700 points or more

Begin a new game. Select Custom difficulty. Choose Master as the base. Add enough difficulty modifiers so the point total will exceed 700. I recommend the following:

--No Focus (Focus ability disabled) - 50 points : ON
--Stealth Takedowns Only (You cannot perform combat takedowns) - 50 points : ON
--Specialty Arrows Only (Only Blunt, Water, Fire and Rope Arrows enabled) - 50 points : ON
--No Food or Poppies (Food and Poppies are not consumable) - 100 points: ON
--Expensive Resources (Cost of resources are increased) - 70 points : ON
--No Upgrades (Non-critical tools, gear upgrades, and trinkets are disabled) - 100 points : ON
--No Kills or Knockouts (If human/animal is harmed in any way, mission fails) -170 points : ON
--No Alerts (If human/animal detects you, mission fails) - 145 points : ON
Total points:735

Note: In order to unlock the Something to Prove achievement, you must include at least 700 points of difficulty modifiers.

Play the game. You will unlock both this achievement, Hard Times, and the Something to Prove achievement for playing on Custom Master at over 700 points. The walkthrough provides a very streamlined roadmap to get through the game on the Custom Master difficulty.

Note that, for this achievement, you only have to play the Prologue and the 8 main story chapters. Thus, the simplest approach to the achievement is to ignore the City except for the requirements to get from the Clock Tower hideout to the chapter start locations. This includes speaking with any NPCs required to initiate the chapter. When you finish chapter 8, the achievement will pop.

Master difficulty is the hardest difficulty in Thief (not counting custom difficulty). Master is automatically made available to you in the beginning of the game. As noted by the game itself, opponents on Master are able to take you down in just a few hits. Harming civilians will also automatically net you a game over. Though the gold you obtain from loot is the same as other difficulties, resources and upgrades are more expensive. Focus meter also depletes at a much faster rate.

Due to the way multipliers work on Custom difficulty, it is recommended you pair your Custom difficulty run on Master. Since you're limited into what you can do on Custom given all those constraints, breezing through the game in a stealthiest manner as possible will make your Master run easier.

Some tips:

  • The swoosh ability () is your best friend. Always use this technique as opposed to sprinting if you want to move around faster. Do note that although this technique is silent, it will make noises if you're using it over fragile surfaces or near caged animals. Although useful and should always be used, keep in mind that overuse will cause Garrett to overexert himself (heart icon at the bottom right of your screen) so use wisely.
  • Purchase a wrench, a pair of wirecutters, and a razor as soon as possible. Aside from these being required for collecting certain loots/collectibles in the game, the stealthiest way to get through each area in the story almost always requires you have one of these at your disposal.
  • In addition to the above upgrades, always keep a few rope arrows on hand. Water arrows are also useful but priority should be given to rope arrows.
  • If you have upgrades enabled, focus on upgrades that increases the efficiency of stealth, and then maybe health/focus related upgrades. Upgrades to your bow can be ignored, since you'll hardly be using your arrows.
  • Always avoid fights, simply because enemies are capable of finishing you off in just a few blows. The combat in this game is pretty clunky, so always go for stealth.

I advise you not to worry too much about this trophy. If you go for platinum, then for the “Means Something” trophy you will need to beat the game on special difficulty with 700+ points. You can get these 700+ points by playing only on the master. As a result, when you knock out 1 trophy, you automatically get another one.
