How to unlock the Legend in Leather achievement in Thief - Definitive Guide

There are 53 objectives in the game, plus another 4 in the DLC. Without replay you can only get 36 of them (40 with DLC) in a single game. The objectives, confusingly referred to as "Challenges" occasionally in-game, are shown in your menu under "Objectives" during a mission. You can review the ones that have been awarded by looking in your menu under "Player Progression -> Statistics".

The list of objectives by mission is at the bottom of this solution. Here's some detail on how they work:

Chapters
In main story missions - "chapters" - there are four shown, but you can only be awarded two of them. There is always a "Collect All Loot" objective, and it is always obtainable. There are also three others, and you will be eligible for one of them at the end of your mission. Which one you are eligible for depends on your playstyle.

As you play through each level, the game decides what "style" your play is, based on how stealthy you are ("Ghost"), how many objects you interact with ("Opportunist"), and how many people you kill or knock out ("Predator"). At the end of the level, you will be awarded the Thieving Objective for your playstyle if you satisfied its requirements. It doesn't matter if you filled the requirements for the other playstyles, they don't count. Also, if you manage to perfectly balance two separate playstyles, you can be awarded the "Hybrid" playstyle, and miss out on all of them. The only way to avoid this is to heavily favor one play style, or to replay the mission. Alternatively, you can forgo that challenge and use the slack available to still get to 25.

Client Jobs
In addition to the chapter challenges, there are also 20 more available in client jobs from Ector and Vittori. These challenges do not depend on playstyle.

For most of the six client jobs, there are four objectives available. The final mission from Ector only has one, and Vittori's second job has two that are mutually exclusive. Details on how to start these missions are below with the objective list.

Strategy
If you aren't going for every piece of loot in every chapter for your own reasons, there's no reason to go through the pain of trying for that objective more than once. You'll need to do it once for another achievement:
THIEFObsessive CompulsiveThe Obsessive Compulsive achievement in THIEF worth 21 pointsSteal all loot and collectibles in a single chapter.

After that, you can safely omit the "Collect all loot" objective from each chapter mission, greatly speeding things up. You'll have 9 objectives completed from the chapter missions, and you can easily get the other 16 from client jobs. Each client job is short, and they have no separate areas - you can always backtrack throughout the job to find any missing loot, so "Collect All Loot" is much simpler and far less tedious than it is in the chapter missions.

It's not a bad idea to refrain from upgrading your bow damage until you've finished the first five of the client missions. There are two client missions that have both combat takedowns and remaining undetected as objectives. It's possible to get both in one run; pull out a broadhead arrow and fire it into the knee of an unsuspecting guard. While they contemplate transferring to Skyrim, walk up behind them and perform a takedown. If you aren't getting the takedown prompt, try swinging your blackjack at thin air once - away from the guard - that always worked for me. The problem with the increased bow damage is that it can kill the guards outright, making this problematic. Trust me, it's no fun to try to down guards with repeated blunt arrows while trying to stay hidden.

If you are paying attention to this achievement from the beginning, it should be no issue to get 25 objectives as you play. If you miss one while playing through, I'd recommend pushing forward rather than immediately replaying the chapter.

If you are forced to replay parts of the game, I recommend replaying the client jobs rather than the chapter missions - they're far shorter, easier, and have four objectives available rather than two.

Replaying
As mentioned before, you can only get 36 of the challenges completed without replaying missions. You can, if you want, replay missions to boost your objective count. You cannot get the same objective over and over again. You can, however, replay to get an objective you missed, or to get the objective tied to a different playstyle than you got the first time through.

To do this, you must return to the mission's beginning point in the city map and start your replay there. Do NOT use the "Replay" option at the end of the mission. Also, be aware that the game's counter will no longer be accurate. Here's the details on how that all works, hidden behind spoiler tags to save room:

CREDITS
Thanks are due to several TA users whose comments on this solution dramatically improved it. lTN95l set me straight on the client objectives in the first place. It was IL1971 that pointed out that two of the challenges in Vittori's second job are mutually exclusive. RoiDesFeuilles and xxDrunkenJedixx both discovered the "Hybrid" playstyle - much to their dismay, I imagine. BrokenKnight was the source of the DLC information. Finally, iAMxYUNGxGxBABY helped iron out the intricacies of the replay system.

Hmmm I'm confused by this , and am likely being a bit thick here , I'm on my master 700+ run, the over all all stats screen after chapter 5 shows, 5/10 completed thieving challenges and 5 ghost playstyle ones, do I have 5 or 10 counted towards the achievement on that save?

Wow this is really horrible. I'm attempting to get this achievement during a Custom difficulty over 700 run, and I think it's going to be be pretty impossible. For one thing, Chapter 1 gave me a "hybrid" playstyle since I was split 50/50 between opportunist and ghost.....and therefore only ONE challenge counted, even though I completed 2 of them!

Since there are a lot of combat challenges that I am not even allowed to attempt with the custom difficulty, I think it's going to require a second playthrough.

Confirmed. Just happened to me too. I just finished a chapter and ended up with the Hybrid play style. Just to note even if you meet the prerequisites for all of the objectives/challenges the only one you can get credit for is "Lift all loot items". Be careful and try not to end up with the Hybrid play style. Doesnt make sense they would null all but 1 completed challenge because of this.

Pretty sure for the Vittori job 2 you can't get all four as when you complete an aerial takedown it negates your no kills challenge.

@BrokenKnight, I will add that.

@RoiDesFeullilles, xxDrunkenJedixx, that completely sucks. I've never managed a Hybrid play style - luckily.

@IL1971, good tip, but... is that a guess, or do you know for sure? Aerial takedowns might be knockouts. Most objectives say "No kills or knockouts," but this one is specifically "No kills," so you may be able to do both. I'll run it this afternoon and find out for sure.

You can replay levels to get challenges you missed. I just redid the side missions and it popped. I didn't collect loot and/or was seen. The second time around I got all loot and went undetected.

Your progress is reset when you replay a chapter. If you didn't get either challenge, you can redo the chapter and get one or both. If you got one, you will have to get it again when you replay if you want to get both. If you got both the first time through, you can't add to your progress by replaying, even though there were two others associated with separate play styles.

Same goes for the client missions. If you get three challenges complete on one and want the fourth one, you have to re-earn all of them, not just the one you missed.

I thought it was clear in my original solution when I mentioned progress being reset upon replay, but I've added another paragraph that spells it out explicitly.

Ok maybe were off somewhere. But you don't have to play the same style. Example Vitorri job 2 - on first run through you got undetected and no knockouts/kills. If you replay it again you get Aerial kill, be detected and get all loot. It will should a different number than you have. I have the companion app and it says I have 28/36 challenges while in game it says 21/36

It turns out that it's more complicated than whether you replay or not, it actually depends on whether you replay as soon as the chapter ends or, instead, go to the chapter replay point and trigger it there. I'll update again.

This achievement may be glitchy. When going through my second play through to find all hidden areas, I noticed the counter for "completed thieving challenges" kept going up & down after each chapter played. Achievement didn't pop till 26/37 instead of at 25.

I finally got this achievement to finish this game and I have to say it is a pain in the ass to understand. Thankfully, PuckJunkie did a great job at explaining it. If only I would of looked at this guide sooner. At one point I completed a challenge and ended up with less Objectives than beforehand which is why I came here.

There is an app available on iOS and Android that extends some functionality of the game. Apps like this are called "companion apps." This one is not free. If you have it, though, the counter on it is correct, unlike the game's actual counter.

I just finished my playthrough with a custom difficulty over 700. Does anyone happen to know if by chance, when you finish the game, you're allowed to then do whatever or would I need to start a new game/new playthrough in order to get these challenges?

Technically speaking, you can still increase your challenge count by going back and replaying specific chapters (see the "Replaying" section in my solution above). However, you'll find it difficult - if not impossible - to get this achievement playing in a master 700 run (see my reasoning a few comments up).

I know I'm being an idiot.. But say if i got 2 out of 4 objectives (on second ector job).. I replay that and go for the other 2 and all 4 will essentially count is that right? I'm the chapters you could get all 3 play styles to? Thanks

By TheWelshHunt on 30 Jun 2015 20:50
Yes, assuming you don't do the replay by using the replay option presented to you as soon as you finish the mission. You need to "continue" at the end of the mission to save the first run-through's accomplished objectives. Then you can replay and you'll get all four objectives if you complete the other two the next time through.

For what it's worth, it seems like the break point between stealth and opportunist is ~5 suspicions raised. That many or more, and it doesn't matter if you've been seen or not, you can't get that objective as you no longer have that playstyle according to the game.

Okay, I'll add the information on the client jobs and Ector job, but if there are only 2 per chapter, what the hell have I been getting? I'm getting four per chapter, not 2.

Also you might want to add that DLC counts toward this too. I have the bank heist DLC and completed 3 of the four challenges there, and got the achievement after chapter 6 ( ch 1 - 1, ch 2 - 1, ch 3 - 1, ch 4 - 1, ch 5 - 0, ch 6 - 1, vittori 8 of 12, Ector 9 of 9, and bank heist DLC 3 of 4.

Probably not. It probably means the achievement isn't tracking the in-game counter, it's tracking whatever the companion app pulls from. Which means you actually could get all four objectives in one chapter by playing it three times. It wouldn't show up on your in-game counter, but it would still count toward the achievement.

I'm going to start up a second profile and see if I can get the other achievment (for 10 objectives) to unlock that way. I should only need to play through chapters 1, 2, and the first client job. If I can duplicate your experience, I'll change the solution. (@&^#$(*&^@#*$&^@*#&^$

@Demon Slayer050, I've only seen the challenges go up and down when engaging in replays. Were you replaying chapters? And this is the first report I've seen on a late unlock - you actually hit 25 on the counter and it didn't unlock?

@Calex dEUS, you have five, assuming you haven't done replays that are messing up the game counter. In the overall stats screen, the top left number, labeled "Completed Thieving Challenges," is what you should be looking at. This is your 5/10. The number below that isn't challenges or objectives, it's number of chapters completed in each playstyle, regardless of whether you've completed any challenges associated with them or not.

As a side note, I wouldn't worry about this in your master 700+ run. It's entirely up to you, of course, but you're limited in the challenges you can attempt. There are only 16 available to you in client jobs, so you need 9 in the chapters. That means either a replay or getting "Collect All Loot" at least once, which is problematic in a master 700+ run because you usually need several rope arrows to get everywhere. If you're using the expensive resources modifier, you probably can't buy enough rope arrows to do the job without replaying a chapter several times over.

You're also forcing yourself to do all of the client jobs in this run, and get every available challenge in them. You'll have to do them all again in your second run, which is very nearly required for the same reason - you need at least a couple dozen rope arrows to get all of the achievements in this game. You'll be replaying chapters for days just getting enough money to buy them.

Thieving Challenges are available in all 8 Chapters, all 6 Client Jobs and the Bank Heist DLC. At the end of every Chapter/Mission your Style of Approach to the Chapter/Mission is categorized as Ghost, Opportunist or Predator.

For the 8 Chapters, you can only unlock 2 Challenges MAX at a time. Your Style of Approach determines which Challenges you can unlock.

Ghost = Ghost Challenge (1st one) + All Loot
Opportunist = Opportunist Challenge (2nd one) + All Loot
Predator = Predator Challenge (3rd one) + All Loot

For the 6 Client Jobs, you can unlock up to 4 Challenges at a time. Some Challenges contradict others, so unlocking all would require replays. The Bank Heist DLC also counts towards this Trophy.

You can replay Chapters and Client Jobs to complete any Challenges you did not complete the first time around.

Here is a list of Thieving Challenges:

These are optional objectives in certain side missions and in the main story that you can complete, such as remaining undetected or saying the alphabet backwards. You can replay a mission ad infinitum to complete objectives you failed at or that you did not complete, but you cannot farm already completed objectives, as they do not stack. Note that they are called both objectives and challenges, but if you open up the menu during a mission and go to the objectives tab it will show what else you can do to earn for gold for Garrett's compulsive spending. And no, you don't get a video this time.

Each main story mission and client job in Thief will pose a set of what is called Thieving Challenges that you can complete for bonus gold. These optional challenges vary from performing a set number of tasks (pickpockets, distracts, etc.), a certain number of takedowns (combat, aerial, kill), and finding all the collectible loot in the level.

Thieving Challenges are connected to how you've approached in completing a chapter, categorized into 3 types:

  • Ghost - (No kills/takedowns, no alerts)
  • Operative - (Silent takedowns, using the environment to lure distract guards, etc.)
  • Predator - (Kills, enemies alerted and are aware of your presence, etc.)

What this means is that you can only earn around two out of the four thieving challenges per chapter run. This is because attempting certain challenges will cancel out the requirement for another. For example, You cannot earn "remain undetected" and "combat takedowns" simultaneously. Because of this, you should attempt to earn all of the thieving challenges in each Client Job because one, you can fulfill the requirements almost always for all 4 of the challenges and two, because the level is short and compact.

You can check how many you've completed so far by accessing your Journal via -> Player Progression -> Statistics -> then cycling through the mission tabs with / Thieving challenges will be shown on the bottom left, and a COMPLETED will be shown if you have met the requirements for it. The total listed in the "Overall" section is incorrect, so if you want to check how many challenges you have actually completed, do so by manually counting them off yourself by cycling through the tabs for each chapter.

List of Thieving Challenges are as follows:

Lift all loot items (60/60)

For each mission, both story and client jobs, there will be a set of optional thieving objectives. To check what the objectives are for your current mission you can enter your journal by pressing , select 'Player Progression' and then 'Statistics', on this screen the optional objectives are shown on the left hand side. Each mission/job has four objectives, one each for the three different playstyles, Ghost, Opportunist and Predator, with the fourth objective always being to collect all loot, both common and collectible. For the story missions you can only be rewarded for completing 2 objectives per Chapter, one will be tied to whichever playstyle you decide to play and the other will always be the loot based objective. What this means is that you have to pay attention to what the objective is for your playstyle, for example there is no point in going out of your way to pickpocket guards for the opportunist objective if you are killing them all after because your playstyle will be Predator so only the Predator objective will count towards your tally. For the client jobs you will be rewarded for as many additional objectives that you can complete, each one has four with the exception of Ector's final job which only has 1.

There are a maximum of 16 objectives to be obtained from the main story and 21 from the client jobs for a grand total of 37. You need to complete any combination of 25 across all missions to unlock the achievement. You can check how many objectives you have completed by navigating to the 'Statistics' page again and pressing or to scroll to your overall stats, your total number of objectives completed will be shown on the left hand side.

Please note that if you choose to replay a mission your previous run, including any optional objectives completed will be reset, so you can not replay a mission 2 or 3 times to try and obtain all objectives. If you do need to replay the missions click this LINK for images showing all the chapter and client job starting points around The City.

For each chapter you can do maximum of 2 objective, one for the playstyle and one for the 100% loot collection. When you press f1 (by default) > "Player Progression" > "Statistics" while playing a chapter, on the left side you can see objectives for that mission. You can only have one playstyle objective completed per chapter. Exceptions are client jobs, during wich you can accomplish all 4 objectives most of the time. Amount of completed Thieving Objectives is labeled in the statisctics menu on "Overall" tab.

Interesting point: Each story chapter has several challenges, BUT only 2 count.

1 is to collect all the loot (in all chapters)

2 - any test. Moreover, not any of the available ones, but one specific one, different for each chapter.

Forget about “collecting all the loot” in story chapters. Only in the second chapter of the video guide, for the "Obsessive-Compulsive" achievement.

Place special emphasis on the tasks of Hector and Vittori. In these 6 tasks, ALL challenges count, so complete them all, including collecting all the loot. The locations there are small, it’s not at all difficult to find everything.

An important point: if you decide to replay a chapter (or task), then all the tests credited in this chapter will be reset and you will have to do them again.

I’ll add to the hint above - the 2nd test, which counts, is not random and not specific for each chapter. It all depends on the style of play. If you rush through the chapter as a berserker, then the test must be completed accordingly.

Challenges from the DLC task "Bank Robbery" are taken into account in the overall statistics of the trophy.

Received this trophy after completing Vittori's first task. On each mission I collected all the loot and was not noticed. Also, before Vittori, he completed all of Hector’s tasks.

It's worth collecting all the loot in a location, since a lot of the loot is in the locations needed to achieve Finders Keepers / What was yours is now ours

The trophy is not as difficult as it might seem. So, let's figure it out: tests are special conditions during missions (story and side). Most often there are 4 of them for one mission, for example: “ not to be noticed/not to take damage/kill everyone/steal everything ”... In story missions you can only complete two - steal everything and any other, depending on the style of play . You don’t have to bother with stealing everything (except for the 2nd chapter for the trophy): at story levels there are on average 50-70 items, but given that you can’t return to some locations, you have a choice: use guides or vacuum every nook and cranny yourself. It’s easier to do this in additional tasks - there are 20-30 items there, except that there are about 70 of them in the bank. If you periodically turn on the concentration mode, almost everything can be found on your own, because all interactive items (loot/gold/traps, etc.) will be highlighted. The rest of the challenges may change from mission to mission, so it is better to keep track of them through the Select button -> Goals/Player Progress. There, by flipping through the tabs, you can see the total number of completed tasks.

Now about where and what can be done:
- You will complete one test when you collect all the loot for the trophy = 1
- In Vittori's tasks you can get 3 challenges in each task (on a patched game from PSN you cannot get 4 challenges at once): 3 * 3 = 9
- In Hector’s tasks you can get all 4 tests at once, except for the last task: 2 * 4 + 1 = 9
- In the Bank Robbery dlc (almost everyone has it), you can get all 4 conditions at once = 4
Now we count: 1 + 9 + 9 + 4 = 23 - these tests are relatively easy to obtain, because all missions are short. There are only a couple of tasks left to complete in the story missions. For example, in mission 1 there is a condition: extinguish 9 light sources (7 candles and 2 more with water arrows, which are on the level), and given that there is a trophy for this, why not combine? Mission 2 has a different requirement: 10 pickpockets, so why not tie it back to getting a trophy?

Still, I’ll write my own hint because from what’s written above it’s not entirely clear how to watch and do what.

So, after each chapter you see a summary table. On the left is a pie chart. The game evaluates which style you will win in - there are only 4 of them. Depending on your style, you are required to complete additional tasks. For example, I play invisibility style (I don’t stun or kill anyone). Accordingly, the game requires me not to kill anyone and collect 100% of the loot in the chapter. So IN ALL CHAPTERS.

If you play in a different style - you stun enemies, then the game will require you to stun 10 enemies, etc.

By simple calculations we get 8 chapters with 2 tests =16. The question arises: how to knock out 25?? As correctly written above, there are 6 additional missions in the game. They also require testing. Which ones you can see at the link below.

ps You can see what you have accomplished in the log - player progress - statistics
