You can also trade for it at the merchants, or sometimes by decisions made with the world's NPCs.
If you don't want to miss any of them, you can build a Watchtower in your camp. This allows to send out scouts while looking at the map for 50 gold. If there is nothing left to be found, you get a notification letting you know.
You do not have to have the full total amount of wood on yourself at one time. It is cumulative, so feel free to upgrade the camp or buy troops if you like.
If you are being thorough and collecting the nodes, this will come through normal gameplay.
I collected my 5000th wood shortly after the manticore fight in chapter 1.

You can gather wood by defeating enemies or by collecting it in the world. You can easily find wood to be collected in the world, as it will have a hand symbol above it. You should obtain this with no issues before you beat the game. Just explore each region and loot everything.

Such as is the way for "Plutocracy," you will be looting wood as you go throughout the game, almost always along with the gold you loot. Wood is used in upgrading your army camp and creating cards. You will almost certainly have this achievement relatively early in the game as you are presumably collecting everything and completing everything.
