You can also trade for it at the merchants, or sometimes by decisions made with the world's NPCs.
If you don't want to miss any of them, you can build a Watchtower in your camp. This allows to send out scouts while looking at the map for 50 gold. I have found that the nodes that I have missed easily make up the spent gold. If there is nothing left to be found, you get a notification letting you know.
You do not have to have the full total amount of gold on yourself at one time. It is cumulative, so feel free to upgrade the camp or buy troops if you like.
If you are being thorough and collecting the nodes, this will come through normal gameplay.
I collected my 10,000th gold shortly after fighting the bandits behind the temple in chapter 1.

You can earn gold by winning battles, finding it on the map, talking to NPCs, opening chests, or unlocking abilities in the camp. You’ll have no issues gaining 10,000 gold before you’re finished with the first area if you explore enough.

You should be collecting all of the gold available on the map. Gold can be spent on upgrades for your camp and to create cards for your deck from the army camp. As such, it's a necessary resource to keep collecting.
10,000 gold isn't a great amount and, personally, I finished the game with over 50,000 gold unspent after buying everything I needed for all of the achievements that require gold to be spent. Ultimately, 10,000 should be achieved within the first two chapters.
