How to unlock the Burn After Reading achievement in Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales - Definitive Guide

Before starting the game I searched high and low for a trustworthy guide for this achievement, but couldn't find one, so I gathered all the information I could find and managed to unlock it on my first playthrough, these are my findings:

(I was playing on the hardest difficulty, but I don't think it matters)

First of all, I got the achievement upon receveing a report during the epilogue, after a battle.

I'm not sure what actually qualifies as "spymaster letters", but reports also count, since I got the achievement after receveing one.

So, for the achievent:

* Do everything in every map, every question mark, every puzzle, every item, every golden chest and so on. Many of the battles lead to you receveing reports/letters afterwards, and many items also have letters within them.
To make this easier, be sure to buy the watchtower upgrade and send scouts (-50g) to reveal interest points on the map.

* Always read everything upon receiving, just to be sure.

* Choices don't matter. As far as I could tell there are missable letters/reports, I missed one in Mahakam
, apparentely the game only counts the ones you would be able to obtain, given your choices.
As long as you resolve everything on your map before finishing each chapter, it should be fine.

That's basically what I did in my first playthrough and managed to unlock the achievement without much effort.

I've missed this cheevo at first although I searched the maps in depth. The problem was I didn't READ the last one. After the final battle, you'll face Nilfgaardians and Elves (kind of the epilogue of the story) : defeat the elves and go to your tent to READ everything - cheevo pop if you read the letters, having them is not enough.
If you finished the game, reload the last location, win the 2 small battles and go to your tent :)

I just popped the achievement. It wasn't upon picking up a letter, it was upon going into the list of them and marking the last 4 of them as read. This then popped the achievement, before the final fight of the epilogue

I remember getting the achievement as soon as I receveid the last letters at the epilogue, maybe a late unlock? But anyway, I've stated in the solution to always read everything upon receveing

I think you need to have at least a certain number of letters and reports to unlock it. I had 102 before epilogue. Also I don't know if important but I collected in Rivia all pamphlet and then destroyed the printing press.

This is definitely buggy. My suggestion is if you don't unlock after reading the last report. Reload the last map. Just go a load game, if you have finished the game you will need to click x then you should find the last map it will ask you overwrite the save slot which is fine.

Then I recommend unlocking and reading all the "letters" including the two on the map before reading the last report.

Using this method unlocked it for me.

As far as I can tell, the only way to miss anything is if you don't explore the whole map. All choices give different letters to read, the point is to read all that are available to you. Here are some tips to keep in mind while a solution to one of the big problems is located at the bottom of the guide.

Every map has a point of no return location. When you hit it, go back to your tent and scroll through all letters and notes.

Buy the watchtower upgrade as soon as you can, this can reveal points on the map that you would have missed. This is very important for the second tip.

Some of the hand icons on the map, the ones you might avoid because you think they are resources, are actually letters and notes within the game. You need to read these, especially when you return to Rivia.

In the Dwarven map, while exploring the location where
, there are towers with Dwarven notes on them. Read those.

When you return to Rivia, there are propaganda posters of you in the first half of the map, you need to find and read all of these before you get to the printing press. Choose your own propaganda posters and then read all of those that you find in the rest of the map. I am unsure if this is actually important for the achievement, but I did it anyways to be safe.

The most important thing that seems to get a lot of players is the
After the fight, there is one final letter available to you in your tent. A lot of people (including me) missed this on their first playthrough. If the achievement didn't pop and you think this is it, just reload the chapter and do it again. Takes all of 10 minutes to be sure instead of starting the whole game over.

It's worth noting that I flipped the printing press halfway through reading them and I still popped the achievement. So that doesn't appear to be necessary.

This was a great checklist, thank you. My choices differed slightly and had the following differences, but still popped at the end, after reading:

Lyria
I didn't have Nilfgaardian Ultimatum

Aedirn
I also had:
Letter to Fableson
Warning

Mahakam
I also had:
Call to Arms

Angren
No difference.

Rivia
I also had:
Letter from Caldwell

MISSABLE

As you progress through the game, you’ll receive letters through story-related quests. At the end of the game in the Aldersberg region, when you’ve completed the Elf battle, the last letter will be received. Go into your menu and read all the letters, under reports, you've collected throughout your journey.

As long as you explore each region and partake in all the battles, puzzles, etc., you should have no issues gathering all of the letters. It is possible they are all obtained through story objectives.

The spymaster letters are given to you throughout the game by your allies, NPCs that you interact with, and enemies you defeat. There is no real way to guide you through collecting because they willl differ based on decisions you make throughout your playthrough. The best way to guarantee that you do not miss this is to, as with many of the achievements in this game, complete everything in every chapter. Speak to everyone and loot everything before moving onto the next chapter, using the 'Scouting' ability to be sure you didn't miss anything on the map.

Also, be sure to open your camp and go to Meve's tent, or else press from free-roam to go straight there and read any letters you receive. You will know when you receive a new letter as there will be a green notification on your camp icon on the left of the screen.

To get this trophy you need to make the right choices. You almost always have to attack everyone and spare no one.
1) In Lyria, attack the ambassador and then execute him and take with you the elf whom the inhabitants want to kill.
2) In Aedirn, attack the Gavencar caravan, and spare Falbeson and go to the feast that he arranged.
3) In Mahakam, attack the Nilfgaardian caravan and help the dwarves in Drektag find youth. I had Rayla, she will kill all the prisoners after the battle. I don't know if this affects the receipt of the desired letter.
4) In Angren, accept Gervin's invitation, then kill him and go after the blue light and take things there.
5) In Rivia, attack the son of Earl Caldwell and the camp of slave drivers.
6) In the epilogue, do not let the elves go.
There may be more choices for receiving letters.

I didn't go to the feast. He felt sorry for the count's son. He let the elves go. As I understand it, it doesn’t matter what you choose. Each playthrough has its own set of reports, which depends on the actions chosen, but you need to read everything that comes out. For example, my list of reports turned out to be several items less than in the first hint and still the trophy dropped

It is necessary to read all the writings that can be found in the game. I compared my list and one guy - I found more in one chapter than he did, he found in another, but both got it. Here is a sample list of what is needed:

If you have collected all the reports (there are suspicions that the letters are also important), and after the epilogue the trophy does not drop, restart the game and go through the epilogue again from the very beginning. A trophy will drop

I received this trophy during my first playthrough in the Epilogue (I took the last letter from a damaged cart). During the playthrough I went through all the puzzles, attacked all the castles, communicated with all the NPCs (clicked several times), before moving to the next level I sent out scouts and collected what I missed.

The trophy is very evil . There are no statistics on it on the maps and it is not possible to understand whether everything was collected on the map or not
After the end of the campaign, you cannot return to any card. Letters drop both after dialogues, and they can be picked up in a pile with resources. There is only one way out. you need to vacuum out each card and check whether you have collected everything down to the last “stick”. We send a scout and visit absolutely all the places that are marked on the map.
My trophy didn’t drop after the end of the campaign. I replayed the epilogue from the beginning and in a separate carriage, which was not marked on the map at all, I received the last letter.

on each map we send scouts several times and collect all the trophies on the map so that there is a clean map and read all the letters so that there is no exclamation mark
