How to unlock the Das Rheingold achievement in Ticket to Ride: Classic Edition - Definitive Guide

The cities required for this includes the countries at the end of the Rhine, listed from North to South:

Holland (Neiderlands, Red-Blue-White horizontal striped flag country area)
Dusseldorf
Mainz
Karlsruhe
Freiburg
Switzerland (Schweiz, white cross on red flag country area)

I played against 1 Marg Loughbot. She tended to take 2 destination cards at the start of the game and complete those 2 only. However, she tended to take long routes, racking up big points, but that does keep her away from your path.

At the start of the game, I took 4 short destination tickets. I took all that were within a couple trains of the Switzerland-Holland route I would have to take.

You need a minimum of 14 tickets. This is if you manage to take or are given 2 orange, 3 white, 1 blue, 3 pink, and a pair of any other color. You start with 4 cars, so you need 5 turns to collect enough cards. You need 8 turns to lay the track, so that gives you 3 turns to play around with. I laid my last track on the 15th turn and got the achievement. There is a turn tracker present on the map if you haven't gotten the achievement yet. It's an image of the train in the achievement logo in the top right corner of the map. If you go first, it will increment 1 at the beginning of each of your turns.

I focused on taking the cards I needed to fill the route first. If there were no cards to take that I needed and I had a set of color cards to take one of the route paths, I took it immediately. If I had extra cards that I wasn't collecting, no cards visible that I wanted, I took some gray routes. If Marg takes a route you need, you should restart. If she takes near a route you need, try to take those quickly so she doesn't.

There are some alternate routes. You can go through Dortmund and Munster to get to Holland if you don't have the 3 pink cards but have 2 orange. This takes 2 extra turns. If you don't have 3 white you can go from Karlsruhe to Freiburg though Stuttgart. If you don't have two orange, you can get to Switzerland though Konstanz requiring an extra turn and different cards.

It may take a couple tries to get the cards you need and not have Marg take part of your route before you get it complete.

Once the route is complete, I completed the destination tickets in my hand. For the remainder of the game, I drew 4 short destination tickets. I kept any that were already completed, and any that I could complete in the remaining time. I ended with around 15 completed cards, which was plenty to beat Marg.

I played against Jane Stanbot using a combination of short and long tickets. I needed only 5 completed tickets and ended up with 110 points against 77 (the bot completed only one of the two tickets). Had to restart a couple of times but all in all I felt it is an easy one to get.

Great guide. I was worried about how difficult this would be, but it only took 3 tries using this strategy.
