How to unlock the Mountain Hermit achievement in Ticket to Ride: Classic Edition - Definitive Guide
A ‘Mountain route’ is a piece of railway which has one or multiple segments crossed out. A mountain route costs you the same amount of cards as any other piece of railway would, however it will cost you one extra train.
Example: if you want to connect 2 cities through a blue route of 3 pieces, of which 1 is crossed out, this will cost you 3 blue traincards (or locomotives) and it will cost you 1 + 1 + (1+1) = 4 trains.
The key on getting a good set-up is making sure that the destination tickets you pick in the beginning are able to be connected through a route of which as many segments are crossed out. On my achievement-winning game I started with the destination tickets of Tblisi - Shiraz and Omsk - Astrakhan. The first one was connectable through many crossed out segments which was perfect. I did not even bother attempting to connect the second destination ticket and took the deduction without looking back.
This achievement is not very difficult, as you are most likely to end the game before your opponent(s) has laid all tracks to finish their destination tickets. This is because you simply run out of trains a lot faster. Make sure to grab as many of the bigger pieces of railway when you are done with your destination tickets to collect some extra points, while staying connected to your network of connections for the ‘Asian explorer’ bonus.
In my achievement-winning game I scored 80 points while only completing 1 out of 2 destination tickets, while my opponent C. Huntingbot scored 73 points while completing 2 out of 3 destination tickets. We both shared the 'Asian explorer' bonus, which is most likely where my 4-piece mountain routes came into play and made sure I had more points than my opponent. As a visual aid, this is my achievement-winning game:
The achievement is still somewhat based on luck. Keep restarting until you get at least 1 destination ticket which is connectable by a lot of mountain routes. I achieved it on my first try so I'm sure most of you will not experience a lot of struggles meeting the requirements! :)
* if for some reason the image is not present in this solution, just let me know, I can re-upload it! :)

This glitched on me. The achievement showed as unlocked in game but didn't pop on live. I thougt it was a typical x1 issue and it would pop the next day or after a reboot but it didn't. Meeting the requirements again also didn't work. In the end i had to delete my save data and redo it for it to finally pop.
