How to unlock the Poker Player achievement in Ticket to Ride: Classic Edition - Definitive Guide
This one needs a lot of luck! But it's doable. Here are some advices and strategy I use to achieve this.
First, the eight roads to claim are:
- Pink : Portland - San Francisco (do not take green, no other '5' road in pink)
- Orange : San Francisco - Salt Lake City (do not take white, no other '5' road in orange)
- Red : Helena - Omaha
- White : Phoenix - Denver
- Yellow : El Paso - Oklahoma City
- Black : Sault St Marie - Montreal
- Green - Saint Louis - Pittsburgh
- Blue : Atlanta - Miami
Taking all these '5' roads will cost 40 cars. You start with 45, you only have 5 left to block your opponent or complete some objectives. So you will NOT complete any objective (*). Then, to avoid a massive point loss at the end, choose the 2 lowest objectives cards. If you do not have 2 objectives cards with less than 10 points each, just restart the game!
(*) Only exceptions to this are
- "Seattle - Los Angeles" objective. Since you have to claim Portland-San Francisco (pink road), you only need 4 cars to complete this one (3 for San Francisco-Los Angeles + 1 for Portland-Seattle).
- "Denver - El Paso" objective. Since you have to claim Phoenix-Denver (white road), you only need 3 cars to complete this one (3 for Phoenix-El Paso). Thanks to FoXD3vilSwiLd to figure this out!
To achieve this, I choose C. Huntingbot for some reasons
- His first moves are only small claims (1 or 2 roads)
- His pattern is pretty straightforward: he claims connected roads to complete his first objective before moving to the next one. So, if he claims a road close to a '5' road, you can claim it before it does (*)
- He "panics" only when you don't have many cars left and and then claims 6 roads to score +15.
(*) Others AI players are less predictable and are able to claim a 5 road at the other side of the board, with no warning!
As AI panics only when I don't have many cars left (about 15-20 cars left), my strategy was to collect all the cards I need to claim the 8 roads consecutively. I didn't claim anything before having all the needed cards. When I start to claim, if he doesn't have sufficient card stock to claim the 6 roads, he just pick new cards on his turn. If you don't wait but claim as you go, you'll need to pick cards when he's already in a panic. He will then score a lot of points.
Even with that strategy, all is speed related: the sooner you have all the cards to start claiming, the better it is: you only win if your opponent miss 1 or 2 objectives!
Last tip: To speed up the collection, do not stack the colors one after the other, but raise your stock in parallel. If you stack the colors one after the other, you will eventually have no choice but to take a card from the pile because all visible cards have colors for which you already have 5 copies.

Good guide, worked fine for me.
But I have 2 things.
First, there are other cards they work with, i had Denver - El Paso with only 3 more, so 2 left.
And Red is Helena to Omaha, but i like Obama too :D ;)
