How to unlock the European Union achievement in Ticket to Ride: Classic Edition - Definitive Guide
The description of this achievement should be clear enough. You have to finish the game having more points than your opponent(s). You also have to connect all surrounding countries with your network of railways. This means connecting Belgique, Allemagne, Italie and Espagne (Belgium, Germany, Italy and Spain). Some smaller countries which also border the country of France are not included in the game, so no worries about connecting Luxembourg, Monaco or Andorra :)
Also, which I learned the hard way as I did not pay attention which tracks I was placing my trains on, make sure to NOT CONNECT TO SWITZERLAND. I did this in my first attempt, won the game and were not given the achievement.
The shortest route connecting the neighbouring countries I could come up with needed 32 trains. This resulted in only having 40 - 32 = 8 trains left for destination tickets you also want to complete during your game. Make sure these destination tickets are as much on your route between the bordering countries as possible! In my achievement-winning game the destination tickets I played the game with were:
- Strasbourg to Italie
- Strasbourg to Avignon
- Rennes to Bayonne
The first two were perfect, but the third one was the one with the least amount of points as I was aware I would not manage to finish that one.
As your opponent has a greater chance of finishing destination tickets I suggest placing your trains on the biggest possible pieces of railway. Simply to add some extra points to your total. Also try to make it as much in one single railway as possible to receive the 'longest railway'-bonus of 10 points at the end of the game.
I managed to score 97 points with only 2 out of my 3 destination tickets. This was much more than my opponent C. Huntingbot, who ended with a score of negative 1. As a visual aid, this is the end of my achievement-winning game:
