How to unlock the Impressionism achievement in Ticket to Ride: Classic Edition - Definitive Guide
The requirements for this achievement are easier than they might sound. There are 8 different 5-piece tracks that you will need to all give a different colour. However, your opponent(s) is/are unable to give another 5-piece track the same colour unless you or your opponent placed trains on a previously coloured track of 5 pieces. The routes you will need to give a colour are:
- Brive-la-Gaillarde to Bourges
- Cherbourgh to Le Mans or Saint-Malo to Rouen
- Lorient to Le Mans
- Marseille to Grenoble
- Paris to Dijon (3x)
- Rodez to Lyon
Make sure to play against at least 3 opponents. If you play with 2 opponents, or even just one, you will be unable to colour multi-tracks, making it impossible to give all three connections between Paris and Dijon a colour. It is recommended by user 'alhil' on the Steam community to play against 3 C. Huntingbots. According to this user C. Huntingbot is more likely to add a colour and place trains on the smaller routes.
Every turn you should draw two new traincards. If you place your trains on an already coloured route you will not be able to add some colour any new piece of railway. As written on the Steam community, it is advised to start with connecting the three cities which are bold in the list above. This is because they can be cut-through by another piece of track giving you an error-message when attempting to give these routes a new colour stating:
This achievement based on a bit of luck, but still very easy to achieve and a restart/new attempt should not take long. In some cases your opponent is even likely to give a colour to a 5-piece track which will be helping you.
In my case, I was still able to meet the requirements for this achievement after receiving the 'Blue, White and Red' achievement. As a visual aid, this is what the map looked like after the achievement popped mid-game:

Cannot put Track Piece
You cannot place a Track Piece on this route because it is cut off by a Track Piece
Cherbourgh to Le Mans and Saint-Malo to Rouen also intersect, but that is nothing to worry about as either one has a length of 5 pieces. You cannot place a Track Piece on this route because it is cut off by a Track Piece

Something that should be clarified. Because some of us are not the brightest bulbs in the house. You have to place TRACKS, not TRAINS, and the achievement pops as soon as you've placed them. You do not have to win, or even complete the game.
Since you're placing TRACKS, not TRAINS, you can place 3 different colors on the Paris to Dijon route.
Since you do not need to win or complete the game, just focus on placing tracks so you can do it as quickly as possible without the CPU messing you up. I was scratching my head for an hour trying to find the last 5 train route, and I was assuming that the 5 spot ferry route at the bottom was one of them.
Yes, now that I've realized this, it's clear as day, but I was so used to placing trains from other achievements in this game, that my brain wasn't processing this. I can see from other comments on other sites that I was not the only one confused by this.
Now that I've given myself a good smack on the forehead, off to the next achievement!
