How to unlock the The Atlantic Wall achievement in Ticket to Ride: Classic Edition - Definitive Guide
For this achievement you have to create a railway connecting all cities bordering the Atlantic Ocean, which is the ocean on the west and northern part of the map. The name of this achievement comes from the German line of defence in the Second World War to give resistance to any possible invasion via the ocean. The exact cites that need to be connected are in clockwise order starting at the most southwestern city:
- Bayonne to Bordeaux
- Bordeaux to La Rochelle
- La Rochelle to Nantes
- Nantes to Lorient
- Lorient to Brest
- Brest to Saint-Malo
- Saint-Malo to Cherbourgh
- Cherbourgh to Le Havre
- Le Havre to Calais
This route will need at least 28 trains, leaving you with only 40 - 23 = 17 trains (as correctly counted by SlipshodGlobe32) to finish any destination tickets you picked in the beginning which do not directly border the Atlantic Ocean. Therefore it is advised to pick your first three destination tickets to be in the route needed for this achievement, or at least very close to it. I was able to start the game with these destination tickets which worked out fine for me:
- Toulouse to Reims
- Le Mans to Bordeaux
- Mulhouse to Lyon
The third one was a bit unfortunate as it was closer to bordering the country of Switzerland than to bordering the Atlantic Ocean. As it was only 5 points, I decided I would take the hit and see if I could manage to get some points in another way.
What worked for me is playing against one single opponent. When I noticed what kind of route my opponent(s) was/were building, I (mis)used the moments I could pick the colour of a track to annoy her. There are ways on how you can do this:
- If you have a lot of cards of one single colour your opponent(s) is likely to have less of them. Make some railway around the tracks that your opponent has already laid down all in the same colour.
- If your (one of) opponent(s) adds a specific colour to a big piece of track next to a track that are already occupied by this opponent's trains, it is likely that this opponent has quite a few of this colour. Which should be a reasonable thought to set all tracks around their routes in this colour. Not a single chance that this opponent will have enough traincards to place trains on three 3-pieces and a 4-piece :)
Besides these tips I could give you there are plenty of ways of meeting the requirements for achievement. In my achievement-winning game, my yellow railway network scored 94 points against Marg Loughbot's 41 points. My opponent was not able to complete 2 destination tickets because I was able to take Besançon to Strasbourgh, giving my opponent a negative 26 points. I also managed to take both bonuses. As a visual aid for those who fancy one, this is my achievement-winning game:

You are very much correct, sir! I have changed it in the solution and gave you credit for counting better than I did :)
