How to unlock the The Mole achievement in Ticket to Ride: Classic Edition - Definitive Guide
The description of this achievement should be quite clear. You have to score more points than your opponent(s) while making sure that more than half (23 out of your total 45) of the stack of trains you begin the game with are laid down on ‘tunnels’.
Make sure you are playing the Expanded 1912 map, playing any other European map and meeting the requirements will not unlock this achievement!
When you want to connect two cities through a tunnel, the game shows the top 3 traincards from the stack. Each drawn locomotive or each traincard that matches the colour you are building the tunnel with, will cost you an extra traincard (either of the same colour or being a locomotive) to build the tunnel. If you have enough cards in your hand to pay for the extra cost of the tunnel, you can choose whether this is worth it for you. Take care, as a tunnel may cost you up to 3 extra traincards.
This will also most likely end up in your opponent reaching their last 2 trains earlier than you might do, so always take notice of the amount of trains your opponent(s) has in their stack(s)! It is also advised to keep track of the amount of tunnels you have already built and how many you still need to avoid feeling sad when you don't receive the achievement at the end.
There is no possibility to write an exact guide for this achievement as there are way to many of possibilities to meet the requirements. Instead I can give some tips and share the train of thought (pun intended) I went through going for this achievement.
When starting out, make sure you pick destination tickets that are somewhat close to the mountainous regions, as more than half our trains have to be in a tunnel. In the beginning I was able to pick these destination tickets:
- Edinburgh to Athina
- Budapest to Sofia
Those destination tickets were not ideal, but still got me some of the tunnels already. When I completed these ones, I tried my luck to see whether I could pick another destination ticket going through one of the mountainous regions. I ended up with Paris – Zagreb which was acceptable, as I already had these cities connected.
With less than 20 trains remaining, I simply went towards the end of the game connecting random cities by tunnels. I went from Sarajevo to Kyiv via Budapest and Bucharesti, which gave me an extra 14 tunnel-pieces.
There are multiple ways on meeting the requirements for this achievement. In my achievement-winning game my yellow railway network ended up with 119 points, which was more than Marg Loughbot's 108 points. As a visual aid for those in need, this is the result:
