How to unlock the Valley Commuter achievement in Ticket to Ride: Classic Edition - Definitive Guide
This is a rather simple achievement. You have to have more points at the end of the game than opponent while not claiming any ‘tunnel piece’.
A few tips I can give is to make sure you start with at least 2 destination tickets located in the southern and western parts of the country. Connect them while avoiding the tunnels while trying to get the largest pieces of railway for maximum points. If you are feeling lucky, draw one or two more destination tickets. In my achievement-winning game I did not felt like it was a good idea to draw extra ones.
I had the luck to start with Genève to Bern and Olten to Schaffhausen. I had them connected quite early in the game, where after I created a connection between these individual tracks. With the trains I had remaining I filled the larger non-tunnel routes. Your best option is to place your trains connecting Genève to Yverdon, as this 6-piece is worth 15 points. Also make sure you try to get the bonus for the longest network of railways.
As a visual aid, underneath is my achievement-winning game. I played as the yellow railway network and received 88 points against Marg Loughbot's 72 points:
