How to unlock the That was GIRrrreat! achievement in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14 - Definitive Guide
The key here is that your score is irrelevant, so are the conditions. If you specifically want to boost this, rather than let it come naturally, I suggest a course with big open greens, such as St Andrews or Royal Melbourne. Also, make sure the wind settings are to calm, and just aim for the middle of the green - ignore the pin.
When your ball comes to rest on the green, in the bit afterwards it will say "GIR" after the shot. If you are not sure if you are on the green/fringe, wait for this. If nothing comes up I'm afraid it is counting it as having missed the green. This can be frustrating, especially when you are putting, and you are right on the edge. That's why I recommend aiming for the middle of the green to avoid these scenarios. Good luck!
GIR is when you land on the green with a chance to make an under-par score, for example landing on the green on the second shot of a par 4 hole. This will likely come naturally while playing, however if you are having difficulty set up a practice round on a course you're familiar with and set the wind conditions to calm. Concentrate on hitting clean shots onto the fairway or green from the tee, and particularly when in the fairway. This achievement will unlock at the end of the 18 holes.
GIR or Greens in Regulation is when you make it to the green setting with a putt for birdie. GIR requirements are as follows:
Par 3: Must be on green after 1st shot
Par 4: Must be on green after 2nd shot
Par 5: Must be on green after 3rd shot
This trophy is harder than getting a full round of FIR, but with the right course it is manageable. Just like for the FIR trophy, you should go to St. Andrews. Not only are the fairways huge, but the greens are the biggest on the tour. The greens are hilly and have tough spots, but as long as you land anywhere on the green in the certain stroke limit and it counts. If you’ve gotten a GIR, it will come up having given you extra experience points at the top right corner.
A golfer with a good mix of power and accuracy is suggested here. The power is needed to drive the ball and getting you within a manageable distance to hit the green, and an accurate player to hit the green when you’re within range. Like the FIR trophy I suggest you set the weather to calm and turning off wind to prevent any unnecessary headaches when going for this trophy. Get all 18 holes GIR in a single round, and your trophy will pop.
