1940 is the second level of the game. Periodically, a larger plane (the bomber) will be seen flying level and horizontal across the screen. It takes several hits to destroy one, but can easily be done if you fly even behind it so you can avoid the bombs it normally lobs at you.
Hang around in the level until you are able to destroy four, keeping an eye on the progress meter at the bottom of the screen so that you don't destroy enough enemies to finish the stage too early.
If you crash your plane into a bomber, it also counts as shooting it down.

During 1940, periodically a bomber will appear and fly across the screen. For this achievement, you need to shoot down four bombers during this stage. Each is worth 1500 points. Be careful as they do shoot at you.
You can lose lives and still obtain this achievement as long as you shoot down four bombers before the stage ends. You need to accomplish this before the B-25 “boss” appears as they do not show up anymore after that.
