When a formation is about to attack, it is preceded by a sound cue. When a group of planes in formation attacks, destroy them all quickly before they split up or fly off-screen. You will see a bonus score number appear when you destroy the last of the formation if you are successful. Do this three times in one game (across any levels, they don't have to be all on the same stage) and the Achievement is yours.

This is easiest to unlock in 1910. As you’re flying around, at some point you will hear a quick piercing sound alerting you that there is a formation about to appear. There are usually 3-5 aircraft per formation. For this achievement, you need to destroy all the aircraft in the formation three times in one game. You will know when you’ve destroyed them all when a 2000 point bonus pops up on the screen.
You can lose lives and still obtain this achievement.
