From what I experienced, this is NOT cumulative (it doesn't count gold you spent) so you need to have 100,000 gold in your coffers all at once. You achieve this by collecting gold from chests, killed enemies, mission rewards, or selling the loot you've picked up.
Many times, you'll find your inventory full of loot. So you'll likely end up going back to a trader in a village or town and then running back to get more loot. Luckily, loot stays on the ground long enough for you to do this. (oh how I hated the first Diablo for PC and its disappearing loot! you had to drop loot/gold in town that you wanted to keep/store)
