How to unlock the ...Becomes the Master achievement in Titanfall 2 - Definitive Guide
Recommended Setting: Auto-Sprint (Pilot)
Loadout Required:
- R-201 (Rifle) or EVA-8 (Shotgun)
- EPG (Found hidden at the shooting range, alongside the outside of the ring above)
- Arc Grenades
In a similar vein to the classic "Mile High Club", this will require you to complete an almost flawless run of "The Gauntlet", scoring less than 33.65 seconds in order to attain 3rd place on the single player scoreboard.
The most important factor here is SPEED. You will need to be able to reliably complete the course in 33 seconds before even factoring in the enemies. Once you have a good feel for the controls and how to chain movements in order to maintain a high speed, start killing the enemies during your runs using the most efficient methods. You will need to get all 15 enemies in a run or else you will get a 2 second penalty per target missed. You'll use arc grenade for large groups of enemies, the R-201 for close range high speed shots, and the EPG for longer range splash damage kills. Don't accidentally hit yourself with arc damage, as this will disturb your suit and slow you down. During your entire run, you should be wall running, double jumping and sliding. If you aren't, you are losing speed and therefore time. View the video for the exact strategy for every enemy.
You'll have to make some difficult shots, but if you manage to put a good run together while maintaining high speeds, the run will come together and you'll get it eventually.
1.While going for this breathe, it will help relax your mind.
2. If you've been trying this for a while and feel like you're going to hit something, take a break from the game, watch a movie or play a different game. Come back with a clear head. It took me 4 tries, 2 hrs each try.
3. I know there's a lot of guides and videos for this already and I've watched them all but the one I'm posting below really helped me a lot with step by step voiceover. I followed it to a t, pausing and playing while practicing every section before really getting into it.
4. You can just use a shotgun and arc grenades(as the video proves). You don't have to use the EPG If you feel like switching to a weapon during the gauntlet burdens you a lot(I know I forgot a couple of times to switch on certain sections and it messed me up). It was only in my achievement run that I used only the shotgun and arc grenades so I didn't have to think about switching to EPG.
5. If you feel like you're moving too fast or thinking ahead pause the game, breathe. View the video, go over the section you're at come back clear headed and focused on the section your in.
One last thing, if you mess up or at the end and don't feel you'll make it, just pause and restart, don't finish because your ghost pilot will follow you the next run and if you don't like being distracted then that's what it'll do if you finish.
BTW, my finish time was 33.50

★RECOMMENDED WEAPONS:
- EPG Launcher
- ARC Grenades
- Assault Rifle (R-201) or Shotgun (EVA-8)
★GETTING THE SECRET EPG LAUNCHER:
When you enter the Gauntlet Challenge, turn back and go to the shooting range. If you go to the very front where you drop down and respawn, you can spot the EPG on the front side way up there. Wall run on one side and quickly press X/Square to pick up the weapon.
★BASIC INFO:
- To be in the top 3 you have to beat the time of 33:50.
- Difficulty settings don't apply here
- Practice is everything
★MAIN INFO:
This is gonna take a lot of practice and comes down to knowing your every move. Momentum is everything and you have to keep your speed up with wallrunning, but try to finish the run even if you made mistakes.
The last room is the most difficult one and even if you are sure you don't beat the gauntlet time and made mistakes before, you need to get the last room down perfect and practice it.
★TIPS:
- Keep your D-Pad always aimed at the direction you're moving while wall running.
- Jump off walls gives you a speed boost. Find a balance between moving fast and still hitting the targets.
- Embrace the frantic. After you learned the route don't play it save.
- (In the last room) Only shoot the 2 targets while you are in the air. Avoid the circle wall running completely.
To start there are a few things you want to do before attempting your run;
Firstly, Enable auto sprint. This will take some pressure off you while you try do your run.
Second, inside the weapon range there is a secret weapon outside of the map called the EPG, run along the walls inside the weapon range and jump out towards the targets then on the wall above where you would fire the weapons from you will see the EPG.
Thirdly, pick up the R-201 assault riffle & some arc grendades.
Now you're ready to run the course but be prepared to fail.. a lot.. your main goal is to finish the course in under 33 seconds which will require you to kill all enemies and keep up momentum the entire way through. This can be achieved by wall running and jumping. Here is a video of myself doing it and beating the course in 32 seconds with a set back or two, naturally it can be done in 20 seconds if you're really good at it.
Recommended Setting: Auto-Sprint (Pilot)
Recommended Loadout: Evo Shotgun; Arc grenades
After a lot of tries, I was able to get this achievement. Once I did, I was able to repeat the performance almost every time within a 30 minute window. My best time was 32.00 even with mistakes.
I show 3 different runs and walk through the fastest run. Good luck!
Loadout :
- Primary : Alternator
- Secundary : EPG (Hidden weapon)
- Grenades : Arc
Follow what I do !
You must complete the course in 33.65 seconds or less.
Use the Shotgun / Arc Grenades for best results. Accuracy doesn’t matter.
Kill 15 targets — throw grenades ahead of the 3-target clusters. Only shoot solo targets.
Never stop moving, and never touch the ground. Continuously wall-run as you shoot / throw grenades to clear targets.
Only run on the ground when you absolutely have to (though the low door, and right at the finish line) and practice shooting while wall-running.
The pilot's gauntlet is a track of various obstacles and stationary non- hostile enemies which you need to complete as fast as possible. To the left of the start to the track there is a leaderboard of fastest times, you need to place third or higher (I'm fairly certain is impossible to get first). Unfortunately, this is no easy task, and is without a doubt the hardest achievement in the entire game. It requires incredibly precise timing and pulling off multiple skill moves one after another. Any enemies who you do not kill (there are 15 total) will add 2 seconds to your total time, so I'm fairly certain you can not beat this without killing all 15. In the room prior to the gauntlet is a series of weapons on the walls, I recommend you have the following in your inventory
-Arc grenades (explode on impact, be careful though because if you are hit by one it slows you down and you will need to restart).
-The EVA-8 shotgun
-The EPG launcher (obtaining this is a bit tricky, in the shooting gallery in the previous room it is on the wall overhanging you when you are looking out at the targets. You must jump onto the nearby pillars and make a leap for it, grabbing it quickly.
-I also recommend you put on automatic sprint in settings, this is not completely necessary, but I found it a little bit helpful.
When you're all equipped, head over to the start of the gauntlet. I recommend you run it blind a few times just to get a good feel of its layout. Now, this took me about 4 and half hours even having lots of experience with the movement system, so do not expect to get this first try.
I'm including a video of me completing it, and I'll walk through exactly how I did it (note the achievement doesn't show up for me because this was off xbox DVR, but you can see my time at the end. What's nice is pausing and pressing restart gauntlet will instantly put you at the start, no loading time.
How I did it
1. Single jump onto the wall immediately to your left and briefly wall run, jumping off to the right at the last moment.
2. Double jump onto the right wall, and wall run for a split second, double jumping off this wall straight onto the same wall a few feet up (this is faster than just wall running the whole way).
3. Wall run until you reach the circular suspended pillar, and single jump onto this, immediately jumping off back onto the same wall (this takes a fair bit of practice, if you a re split second late you will jump off to the left more than you want.
4. Wall run on this wall until you get about halfway to the end of the brown rectangle, jump off.
5. This jump is difficult as you want to land in a specific spot, but at the same time you need to throw a grenade while midair at the three enemies behind you to the left. You want to aim right for the middle most guy, trying to hit him directly. You are unable though to tell if you actually got all three of these guys as you need to immediately turn back around while mid air and continue. You are looking to land about in the middle of the area, slightly right, and as close to the sliding part as possible (though not too close, you need to build up a bit of speed to actually get a slide off).
6. Side under this section as soon as you are able and shoot the guy to the left with your shotgun while sliding.
7. Immediately stand up and jump to the wall to your right, killing the second enemy right before you do.
8. Wallrun on this wall briefly, turning and shooting the third enemy in the room while you do so.
9. Jump off this wall and at the last possible moment double jump to get to the far adjacent wall. In the middle of this jump shoot the single enemy in front of you.
10. Immediately jump off this wall and onto the adjacent wall, you want to try and get as high off the ground as possible.
11. Double jump back over to the adjacent wall, and in the middle of doing so throw a grenade right in the center of the three enemies, you need to make sure you are high enough to where the electric explosion does not damage you.
12. Continue on this wall, double jump the indent to speed yourself up, and be pulling out your EPG amidst this. This first enemy can be killed by either your EPG or a grenade.
13. Right after killing this guy, jump to the adjacent wall and shoot the next enemy with the EPG while wall running.
14. Jump back again to the other wall, and, same thing, shoot the next enemy with your EPG.
15. Remain on this wall, the next area is very tricky. When the wall starts to curve out, jump off slightly and grab back onto it ASAP.
16. The wall will curve in, here, you want to kind of jump this whole indentation, while doing so turn to shoot the enemy with your shotgun.
17. You want to grab back onto this same wall, which is very tricky. Once you do immediately jump off towards the last enemy, hitting him with your shotgun while mid- air (make sure he's dead before you land on his platform)
18. Land on the last guys platform and immediately jump off towards the finish, sliding as soon as you hit the ground.
If you perform absolutely perfectly, you should barely beat the required time.
Again, this is a very difficult achievement, expect this to take you many many hours, good luck!
The caveat being I used the arc granade, throw front/middle left from the cylinder at the start, slid under, shot him, naded the other 2 holos, continued on his guide.
Loadout: Evo Shotgun, EPG Launcher; Arc grenades
A lot of gamers like myself can watch a clip and recreate the route but i want to include some tips and notes on subtle benefits that i found while trying for this achievement. Hopefully this saves you some time.
1. Start with a wall run and jump to the right wall with enough time to immediately jump again past the 135° corner. Make sure the EPG is out.
2. After jumping off the central pillar and back to the right wall, immediately prime a grenade and throw it at the middle target and jump again towards the center of the wall slit. This immediate action allows you to keep a lower angle for the in air EPG shot through the slit in the next wall; Its easier to hit that next soldier with a lower angle.
3. As you slide into the next room you throw the arc grenade and at the same time jump to the second rock formation to your left making sure to not look at the rock (that will make you climb on top of it. It felt like the grenade throw animation also locked out the clambering, thus the simultaneous timing). Then jump from that rock to the right wall.
3b. Alternatively, i noticed that both the targets on the right that i get with the arc grenade can be hit with 1 well aimed epg shot, and all three targets can be hit at the same time with a single extremely well aimed arc grenade. Using the epg method you could wait until after you jump to the right wall to aim and shoot and the single arc grenade method would save time from having to aim more than once.
4. this is easy to see in my video but you can kill all three targets in this first jumping hallway with a single shot from the EPG. Aim at the ground in front of the middle soldier. This allows a lot of room for aiming errors because you only have to save a single epg shot for this.
5. Its important to either hang onto the inside right corner or jump off the left wall directly into the second jumping hallway to maintain.
6. The epg makes the next 3 targets easier to hit but isn't necessary just make sure to switch to the shotgun before you have to reload.
7. Entering the final room, time and space a wall run on the right wall so that you'll drop off close to the middle just before the room opening. Drop off. Then jump to the corner and immediately again past the concave curve on the right. You dont want to be so high that you hit the upper wall or so low that you hit the ground. Going high will make the second target easier to miss.
8. If you are going to hit the ground at any point remember that you can "bunny hop" by hitting crouch before you land and jumping immediately after.
The goal is to complete the gauntlet in 33,65 seconds or less while hitting all 15 guys. For each guy you miss you get a 2 second penalty - so don't miss!
Basic loadout:
Primary: EVA-8 Auto - Less accuracy required
Secondary: Doesn't matter
Grenade: Arc Grenade - Splash damage and explode on impact
I recommend playing through the campaign on master (for the Trophy) to get used to controls and wall running before but it can be done whenever through Chapter Select after you've gone through the tutorial - although if you're good you can get it first time playing it already.
Before shooting the guys, learn to run the route flawlessly in the required time and then incorporate shooting and throwing grenades.
If you use the EVA-8 Auto you only have 1 extra shot before you can reload so go for 1 shot 1 kill to be safe.
The Training Gauntlet is pretty much the first thing you come to during the campaign (after some control calibration), however I would highly suggest not trying for this achievement before you do the rest of the campaign, unless you have been playing the MP or the first Titanfall very recently. After doing the campaign, you will feel much more comfortable with the controls and be able to pull off the runs, jumps, and slides required more easily. You will be tasked with running a training course in under 33.65 seconds for this achievement, and less than 56.65 seconds for "The Student..."
I tried many different ways of running the course as well as weapon loadouts, but the video below was the one that finally made the most sense to me. It only requires the shotgun, so there is no weapon switching like with the other method, and he slows things down and really explains when he is jumping, how long to stay in a wall run, and where to land. After trying the other methods for nearly two hours, I got the achievement after about ten minutes of trying this method.
Mission Select: The Pilot's Gauntlet - Gauntlet Practice Only
This trophy is without a doubt the hardest trophy in the entire game. It's so hard and skills dependent that most players will save this trophy for last. You're required to place in the top 3 on the Gauntlet scoreboard. The Gauntlet is Captain Lastimosa's training simulation where you can practice running the Pilot Gauntlet to improve your skills in the following two categories:
-
Mobility Skills
- Average Speed
- Max Speed
- High Speed Time
-
Combat Skills
- High Speed Kills
Speed in this game is measured by kph (kilometers per hour) and it's the key to keeping your mobility speed up. You're going to have to take everything that you've learned as you better bring your 'A' game to achieve a Gauntlet scoreboard less than 33.65 seconds. Achieving this top score will also unlock the The Student... trophy; however, The Student trophy is child's play and shouldn't really be your main concern. Just focus on topping the top 3 Pilots on the scoreboard.
First of all, you're going to need to learn how to complete the Gauntlet by wallrunning nearly the entire time. Sliding only when necessary and jumping from wall to wall to gain more speed. Memorize the Gauntlet's course so you know where and when to jump as timing your jumps is very crucial. With that in mind, you have to eliminate 15 enemies while you're running through the Gauntlet. This means you will need to memorize exactly where the enemies are positioned at. This is easy to do because they do not move and are always in the same exact locations. The downside to eliminating these 15 enemies is the fact that you cannot miss any one of them! Missing enemies will result in a time penalty of +0:02.00 seconds. Having 2 seconds added on to your time is something that you do not want to happen and it would suck very badly if you managed the top 3 scoreboard with a time of about 33.60 seconds, only to have the time penalty screw you over by making your score 35.60+ seconds.
Last of all, is Weapon Loadouts. I'm just going to keep this as simple as possible, and remember there is no right or correct way to obtain this trophy as it requires a lot of practice:
Basic Loadout - Nearly everybody uses this!
- EVA-8 Auto - Fully automatic shotgun
- Arc Grenades - Lethal "Flashbang"/"Stun" Grenade that can actually damage enemies
- (The 3rd weapon can be anything, you won't be using it but most people keep the default pistol.)
The Basic Loadout is what you use if you're planning on using the Arc Grenades to get 9 kills while you using only the shotgun for the remaining 6 targets. Things to note about this loadout is that the first Arc Grenade must be used on the first 3 enemies, then the 1 enemy on the left of the slide, the 2 enemies to the right of the wall that you need jump and wallrun on and finally the final 3 enemies that are grouped together at the start of the hallway. Your shotgun comes with 8 rounds in a clip and you only need to shoot 6 enemies without reloading. You don't want to spray and pray, but you do have two extra shots if you do happen to miss a shot. Keep practicing this loadout and you should be getting better the more you practice with it.
Moderate Loadout - This loadout is for those who want explosive splash damage.
- EPG - Single fire, direct energy propelled launcher
- EVA-8 Auto - Fully automatic shotgun
- Arc Grenades - Lethal "Flashbang"/"Stun" Grenade that can actually damage enemies
This loadout is more for high-powered explosive damage. Read the Basic Loadout for the 9 enemies that you need to Arc Grenade. You're going to be using the EPG mainly for the enemies that are in the hallway. The EPG has 5 rounds that act like an RPG. Shot near the enemies' feet or wall near them and they will get eliminated instantly! When you make it out of the hallway, press to switch to the EVA-8 Auto fully automatic shotgun. Use the shotgun to kill the final two enemies. This loadout might take you more time to master than the basic loadout.
Advanced Loadout - This is for highly skilled players with great speed and accuracy!
- R-201 - Full-auto and high accuracy.
- EVA-8 Auto - Fully automatic shotgun
- Arc Grenades - Lethal "Flashbang"/"Stun" Grenade that can actually damage enemies
This loadout is very skilled dependent due to the precise accuracy that you're going to need. It's possible to complete the complete the Gauntlet with only the use of the R-201. In order to do that, you're going to have to learn to burst fire while your wallrunning, jumping, and sliding without ever missing a single shot. That is a very difficult task to master and one that I don't even bother you trying. The shotgun is only there if you missed your burst shots. You still need to Arc Grenade targets but if you're skilled, then you should only need to Arc Grenade 6 targets instead of 9. Everything else you need to shoot while maintaining your speed.
Below are a couple of tips and suggestions:
- Increase your speed by chaining together wallruns, double jumps, slides, and other mobility moves.
- Stay on the wall panels as they can keep your speed up.
- You need wallrun effectively on curved surfaces.
- You cannot wallrun for long, so jump to another wall to keep your speed going.
- Time your wallruns and double jumps carefully for maximum speed.
- Try sliding off the edges of platforms to gain more speed.
- At the start of the Gauntlet, wallrun on the left wall in order to gain speed momentum before actually entering the Gauntlet Practice course.
- Try to maintain 30-40+ khp as much as you can. The maximum kph is 50 which is the top speed you can achieve.
- Carefully throw your grenades to eliminate multiple targets.
- "Cook" Arc Grenades before throwing them can cause them to detonate at just the right time, but if they detonate in mid-air. They will not eliminate your targets.
- Eliminate your targets without stopping or causing yourself to get hurt by your own thrown Arc Grenade.
- Sometimes switching to another weapon is faster than reloading.
- Try different loadouts to optimize your run and scoreboard times, by switching between weapons that are effective at different ranges.
- Memorize the entire course from when to wallrun, double jump, slide, Arc Grenade and shoot.
- Try watching different videos of other players who have gotten the trophy. You could learn something from them or adjust your methods.
- Look at the areas you're wasting a lot of time in. Usually, it's the first part of the Gauntlet, the hallway, or entering the final room.
- If your slide underneath the slide-door beyond 10+ seconds, you might want to restart and past the slide-door under 10.00 seconds.
- Try to keep up with the Ghost as this Ghost is one of the top 3 Pilots that you are trying to beat. If the Ghost is way ahead of you, it's best to restart.
- Double jump or slide into the finishing goal when you're in range to finish as this can save time.
- Last of all, keep practicing. Spend about 1-6 hours a day practicing if you have to. You won't get this trophy without at least putting some time and effort into it. It sucks and it's not easy, but do not give up! Keep at it and it will eventually happen for you.
