How to unlock the Survival Instincts achievement in Tom Clancy's The Division - Definitive Guide
Your goal is to end a session with 10.000 points or more. This will be determined by many factors including (but not limited to) "Enemy Kills", "Time Survived" and "With which helicopter you extracted" (i.e. first helicopter called by any player).
A successful Survival run consist roughly of the following phases:
- Finding a weapon (to replace the default pistol) and getting a decent set of clothes so that you don't rapidly freeze to death.
- Getting Gear Score to at least 89 and crafting at least 2 skills.
- Crafting the Virus Filter and entering the Dark Zone.
- Finding the Anti Virals and 6 Sealed Caches
- Crafting a Flare Gun and getting as close as possible to Gear Score 163
- Calling an extraction helicopter, killing the Hunter and entering the helicopter.
Note: If at any point you hear that a helicopter has been called by another player (whilst you are in the Dark Zone), I would recommend opening your map and finding the "flashing" extraction site so that you can make your way to it and hopefully piggyback on that player's extraction. You can assist in killing the Hunter if need be and even if you don't extract with a full 6 Sealed Caches (for the For the Hoarder... trophy), I still considered it a "free" successful extraction when I was still a Survival newbie.
Warning! If you very close by to the extraction point, stay away for a minute or two. If you are too close in the initial moments, your presence will cause an additional Hunter to spawn.
For an in-depth guide, see the link at the end of this post. Below I will post the tips I myself found the most useful:
- At the start of the session, you will spawn inside a random hideout (outside the Dark Zone) which will always have 1x Painkiller and 1x Green Fabric. Craft a hat then open the map and mark the nearest Helicopter Crash.
- For the first 10-20 minutes the Cold will be a legitimate threat so on your way to the Helicopter Crash, keep an eye out for Fire barrels (some you have to light yourself) and shops. The latter are great places to find a decent amount of resources.
- Always use Painkiller and Medicine as soon as possible. If you find one but are full, stay near it until you are able to use one (and clear inventory space). Remember, how long you survive matters when it comes to points.
- You spawn with a fairly puny pistol, so try engaging clusters of 2-3 low-level enemies as they will drop weapons and the sooner you get a new weapon, the sooner you can worry less about getting killed by enemies. Literally anything will make a major difference (even a shotgun that is useless at ranged combat).
- Speaking of which: try to keep as much distance as possible between you and your enemies AT ALL TIMES. They will flank you and they will kill you. Always be mindful of your surroundings.
- Dismantle every piece of gear you are not using, to convert them into useful resources.
- Don't hoard drinks, they offer a very good boost to the range which nearby resources will be highlighted and once you use one, the odds are pretty good that you will find another drink to replace the one you just used. Don't waste them either though, do not consume one when you are near enemies, other players or are in a huge open are.
- Food is a great way to regain lost health-bars outside of combat. Save your Medkits for the truly dire moments.
- Craft the Pulse skill as soon as possible, followed by the Turret skill. Detecting threats is essential and the Turret is great for distracting (multiple) enemies while you pick them off. Furthermore, for the "Hunter cheese" mentioned below, you will want the Support Station skill.
- Craft the Advanced Virus Filter as contaminated zones (in- and outside the Dark Zone) offer an insane amount of resources and good/high-leveled loot.
- Craft the Additional Medkit Slot.
- Aim to have your Gear Score at 89 (all Blue) or higher before going to the Dark Zone.
- When a player calls for an extraction (using a Flare Gun), a Hunter will spawn for EVERY player currently near that extraction zone. The helicopter will only land once ALL Hunters are dead.
- The Hunter is an incredibly tough opponent but luckily there is a cheese. Across the street to the north/north-east of the extraction zone in DZ-02, is a (green) rope that leads to a rooftop from which you can "snipe & hide" a Hunter to death as he cannot follow you. The recommended sniper to craft is an M44. It does not come with a scope so make sure to hold on to one, before you dismantle a looted sniper. See the link below for more info.
- Don't forget to pop a food AND drink item just before entering the helicopter as the percentage of your hunger and thirst (when you extract) will affect your points.
