For this and all of the other intel achievements I recommend purchasing the Canine unit upgrade in the security wing. Once you have this upgrade you will receive a corresponding perk called Intel discovery which automatically activates. This perk will reveal all of the intel that you have not discovered yet in a zone on the map once you complete all of the side missions and encounters in that particular zone.

To clarify it does this zone by zone. For example once you have completed all the side missions and encounters in the Chelsea zone all of the undiscovered intel in Chelsea will then appear on the map. However the undiscovered intel in Pennsylvania plaza and the rest of the map will not until you complete the side missions and encounters in those zones.

Also bear in mind that if a side mission starts in one zone but travels into another the side mission is registered to the zone in which it starts. Therefore if the mission has multiple parts which take you into another zone the mission is not considered complete until all phases are complete and therefore the intel will not unlock even though the map shows that all side missions for that zone are complete. This is important later as one of the side missions in Murray Hill or Turtle Bay has caused confusion because of this.

Survival Handbook pages papers and scraps that can be found in certain buildings around Manhattan. These collectibles usually involve indoor exploration to get to, but otherwise there's nothing really notable about them. One of Survival Handbook is behind a locked door, but the rest of them are easily accessible. Lockpicks are random drops from enemies and you make not realize if or when you pick them up. You can check if you have lockpicks by entering your inventory screen and pushing to get to the pouches screen. Your key totals are depicted on this page on the lower left side. The picture below is an example of what a page will look like in-game:

In order to make collectibles appear on the map, you have to activate the Security Wing of the Base of Operations and use the console to purchase the "Canine Unit" upgrade for 200 security supplies. Security supplies are earned by completing encounters and missions with the blue shield icon on your map. Once the Canine Unit is purchased, simply clear all side missions and encounters from a named zone to make Intel appear on the map. Note that some Intel items will not appear on the map due to their vicinity to other icons when zoomed out. In order to make them appear, push on your controller and push twice, to filter your map to only display Intel.

If you want view the survival handbooks pages you've collected, push the button on your controller, select Intel in your menu, push , and select Survival Guide. The trophy will unlock when you collect the final page.
