How to unlock the TR Play It Like You Did on a Console in 1996 achievement in Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft - Definitive Guide
Done in TR1.
CAN NOW BE DONE IN NG+; Ensure your game is updated.
This is fairly easy for those who have completed the game in the past. Each time you save a number will appear next to the level name in the save/load screen. If you're doing this on your first run, that number just needs to be lower than 86 by the time you complete the game.
I would advise not going for this at the same time as Hard Boiled (Pistols Only) unless you're very familiar with the game, and I generally wouldn't recommend doing it at the same time as Hardy Raider (no medkit usage) unless you're an expert and enjoy the stress of doing so :)
There are 15 stages, so if you want to make sure you don't lose too much progress upon death, save at the beginning of each stage.
I reached The Great Pyramid with 32 saves and was able to beat the game comfortably in 39 saves. I was being excessive in The Great Pyramid since I had so many spare and some sections of that stage are a little annoying.
If you have started a new game to attempt this, you'll find that the number next to your save doesn't start again from 1. This is normal, and the achievement will still unlock if you beat the game on that playthrough so long as you use less than 86 saves on that playthrough, but make a note on what number your "limit" is, as it'll be harder to track than if you started on 1.

I started a game and once I was 11 saves in I started over on a new game. My total save counter started at 12 even though it was a new game. Will that mess up the achievement if it goes over 86 in this new game?

Oh, that's actually really annoying! I can't answer that I'm afraid without starting on a brand new profile (I'll do that once I've gone through TR2 and 3 for the sake of the guide).
I would assume "no" and that you should get the achievement still, but it certainly makes it harder to track.
