How to unlock the TR2 Defensive Capabilities achievement in Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft - Definitive Guide
This is unlocked on the third level of "Golden Mask (Furnace of the Gods). and there are five catfish that spawn on this level. The achievement will unlock when you reach the end level and results screen
At the start of the level, Furnace of the Gods, shortly after you have picked up the mask (Two achievements awarded for picking this up and speed running the pick up in 50 seconds or less), another area opens.
I have not tested if all catfish need to spawn, so I can not confirm if skipping the spawns (similar to the key item dupe on Barkhang Monastery) for "The End Doesn't Justify the Means achievement" would work. Feel free to comment if it does and I will update the guide.
Catfish 01 - Flooded Tunnel - Upon sliding down, into a very narrow passage, a lone catfish chases you. This is the first If you will encounter. In order to make it spawn you will need to swim to the right in the direction of the underwater pick up. If you are going for all the pick ups in one run, I found that by swimming to the exit (rat room), and jumping back in, enabled me to outswim the lone fish that chased me, so I could pick up the harpoons.
Catfish 02 - Polar Bear Cave - This is the area where you would jump onto a block with a pick up of harpoons on. Upon landing on the block, a polar bear spawns to the right where there is another collectable pick up of Uzi clips. After dealing with polar bear and pick up, Jump back into the pool of water, by swimming down and forward into a small tunnel, and progressing up into and eventually emerging into the polar bear cave where a large med pack is present. Make sure you save before attempting this, and avoid the fish whilst swimming through.
Catfish 03, 04 & 05 - Ancient Buildings/Golden Pool - This is the area with a few buildings/structures you need to work across in order to loop back around to flood the room with water to collect a key item. After killing the mercenaries, and when you have cleared the jumpable gap, you will find yourself backtracking to flip a switch which will flood the room enabling the pick up of several collectables and the main key item (Golden Nugget) in the area below.
When swimming through here, three catfish will spawn. This is how they spawn.
The building where you find the automatic pistol clips, will force one to spawn as you swim through. When attempting to collect the golden nugget (key item) on the bottom in the (somewhat) center of the pool between the buildings, the last pair of cat fish will spawn when you attempt to collect the med pack in the room directly opposite the ammo room. Basically, you need to swim around the full underwater area to make all three spawn. There are plenty of areas where you can swim and climb out should you need to quickly to get away and grab some air. Make sure you grab the key item before attempting to get them to spawn. The only trouble that I found was going for all the 100% collectables. Took me a small amount time before moving on to ensure I picked everything up without taking damage.
Hope this helps anyone that is wondering how to unlock!

Bro, I feel so dumb right now. I have cleared every single catfish in the game, (including that little bastard in the pool on the deck of the Maria Doria guarding the Gold treasure) got to what I'm assuming is that exact same golden catfish in the Temple of Xian because I have to pull that lever and he's too fast, and now I find out none of this was necessary, and I could have been blasting every one of these little mugs from the safety of dry land. This is why I shouldn't achievement hunt on a first playthrough. I am not peeking at TRIII, I'm just not. Appreciate the info immensely!

I feel your pain. The catfish on the temple of Xian were a massive pain in the arse. Especially the one that was in the under water lever pool, I didn’t get bit by any of them except this one in the extremely small dark underwater room, a few seconds before you enter the spider cave. Luckily though there is only a handful of catfish in the expansion that are very easy to deal with. Only one that will give you a bit of bother is the one that is mentioned above if you are going for all the collectables pick ups!
Good luck with your run!

This must be done in “Furnace of the Gods” level (third level of the TR2 expansion). It has nothing to do with the catfish in Temple of Xian and the main game!
There are 5 catfish in this level. To get the achievement you must make all of them spawn.
#1 in a narrow underwater tunnel
#2 in a pool before the polar bears.
I’m not sure if #3 spawns regardless of what you do, but #4 and #5 are the tricky ones. To spawn these, after filling the huge area with buildings with water, you have to swim in the room with the large medipack at the bottom and in the two rooms with AP clips. If you made all of the catfish spawn, they did not bite you and you did not hurt them, the achievement will pop up once you complete the level.

I thought I was struggling with this one, and ended up clearing all the catfish on the standard game, bar one pesky fish that you get trapped in a very small underwater room with, in the "Temple of Xian", and kept getting bit. My original plan was to just ignore this and come back to it, but they are also present in the expansion as well.
As a result I found that this is actually unlocked on the third level of "Golden Mask" (Furnace of the Gods), and unlocks when you hit the result screen.

I feel your pain. The catfish on the temple of Xian were a massive pain in the arse. Especially the one that was in the under water lever pool. I hope my theory is correct, as I didn’t get bit by any of them except this one in the extremely small dark underwater room, a few seconds before you enter the spider cave. I have up and made a back up save to come back to it. Luckily though there is only a handful of catfish in the expansion that are very easy to deal with. This is unlocked in the Furnace of the Gods level, you do not need any other levels for the achievement.
Simply complete the level without killing or being bitten by any catfish. There are only 3 areas where they appear and they are very easy to avoid. Just keep saving and reload if you fail.
