How to unlock the TR3 Captive to Curiosity achievement in Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft - Definitive Guide
Done in TR3 - Madubu Gorge.
Like everything else in this game, I highly recommend tank controls as the controls for the kayak at least make a little bit more sense then.
But there's no hiding it - this stage is famously dreadful across the entire Tomb Raider franchise. This achievement is earned by collecting the Kayak that's near the hut containing one of the secrets, and then finishing the level with that boat.
Essentially if you get in that boat, the achievement becomes unmissable. But if you get in the boat at the beginning of the stage instead, you will need to restart the level.
It's quite a long winded journey to get there, and I certainly would struggle to do it in one save, so here's a link to where the kayak is in the level from someone else's video so that you can incorporate that into your playthrough.
When kayaking, try not to specifically turn into the turns and let your boat drift as much as possible, so that you're only rotating. Holding Up + Right or Left on the DPad won't get you to move in that direction immediately, and instead it starts the "slight turning" process of paddling "Left Right Right" or "Right Left Left". Overall kind of useless. Down + Left/Right, annoyingly, doesn't work. You can only go straight back and pray that the current gets you to where you need to go.
Save frequently if you're not familiar with the stage as there are many forks along the route, where one will be significantly more deadly than the other. If at a fork you see some currents vs a calmer stream, do your best to get to the stream.
If you see a green rope anywhere, row into it, as that will disable a trap nearby. Avoid red ropes as much as possible; they'll trigger a trap, usually directly under you.
If you see a drop coming, start holding down so that you slow right down. For some reason Lara is extremely sensitive to the kayak drops and will lose health if going too fast down a drop, sometimes even killing her.
Good luck, practice and have patience, because you'll need all of those things.
The achievement unlocked when I dropped down the whirlpool that appears after lifting the giant "plug".
