How to unlock the Chatterbox achievement in Tomb Raider - Definitive Guide

Achievement - Chatterbox

Edit 19/04/14 - Many people have now stated that talking to Whitman at the dual crank door at the beginning of the game is NOT required. Personally I would talk to him anyway to be 100% sure.

As you make your way through the story you will encounter crew from the Endurance. They will have an X above their head and this is the button you must press to initiate the conversation. Keep going until the X no longer appears and you see the "TR" logo indicating the game is autosaving. This confirms that you have exhausted all possible conversations with that person. The number of times in brackets is how many conversations I had with each person before unlocking the achievement.

WARNING! This achivement is MISSABLE so you will have to restart your game if you miss any conversations. All must be done on the same play through.

These are the conversations you must have:-

1). Before opening the dual crank door with Whitman, talk to Whitman [4 Times]. He will be standing next to a door with a book in his hand. A word of warning, if you upgrade your axe and enter without talking to him you will miss the opportunity.

2). After Roth gives you the Climbing Axe, talk to Roth [4 Times].

3). When you have to reach the smoke beacon, before descending down the mountain. Talk to Roth [4 Times].

4). On Shipwreck Beach during the day and before heading to the Galleon talk to Sam [3 Times], Jonah [3 Times] and Reyes [3 Times]. You will have to wait for them to finish talking amongst themselves for a while before it will let you initiate the conversations.

5). After coming back from the Galleon and before heading to the Endurance speak to Jonah [4 Times], Sam [3 Times] & Whitman [2 Times] at the Camp and Reyes [1 Time] at the previous location (boat with turret).

6). The last talking part for Chatterbox is during the night on Shipwreck Beach. Return to the Survivor Camp after escaping the Endurance and speak to Jonas [3 Times], Reyes [3 Times] and Whitman [3 Times]. This is before climbing to the research base.

NOTE! As a reference I did a speed run of the game solely for this achievement and it took roughly 6-8 hours.

There seems to be confusion on whether this actually counts at the Whitman conversation. I know multiple people that have only spoken to him once and have the achievement from following my guide. Did you make sure you kept going until the X no longer appeared over there head?

By Smash41 on 07 Mar 2013 07:45
Just to confirm as one of the first few people to get this achievo. You have to talk to them until the "X" and speech bubble no longer appear above them. On the first encounter with Whitman I DID NOT speak to him BEFORE getting the salvage/upgrading the axe.

Keep in mind that to get all the dialogue from Whitman, you must talk to him BEFORE you collect 50 salvage, then again after you have 50 salvage but also before making the Pry Axe.

Just bumrush Whitman down and talk to him and don't explore around gathering salvage in advance, because that will mean you just need another playthrough.

Something you can do in-case you have a tendency to forget is to Change Save Slot from the pause menu after you get one that way you only have to go from there if you miss the next one. Can be a pain anyways but better then restarting from the beginning again.

For the second one, i did it, but then when i went back to finish challenges, he was still there and i could talk with him again, but it was just the same words. So, at least #2 is not missable it seems.

It has been confirmed by the third person to unlock this THAT HE DID NOT talk to Whitman twice and unlocked it as well as numerous people on x360a.

I have amended the guide to avoid any confusion. I am currently working on a play through to confirm the number of conversations you have to have with each person.

For #4, you have to wait at least 30 seconds as they pause for about 7 seconds then continue, so you must wait until then before pressing X

In regards to the Whitman...
I spoke to him 4 times before picking up salvage.
I then spoke to him another 3 times after picking up salvage.
And then after upgrading the axe, he had nothing to say.

Well, given that everyone else managed to unlock it using the initial guide, I'll assume I must have messed something up on my end. Sorry, I kept a checklist and everything...so I don't know what could have gone wrong.

Regardless, changed my negative vote to a positive vote.

Bit confused. I'm playing through it now for the first time. I got to the area with Whitman, ran over to him, cutscene played. I already had fifty salvage at that point, I then upgraded the axe. Am I ok to go over and speak to him now and still get this?

I got the achievement this morning. Kudos to Smash41 for putting the guide together and keeping it updated. Being an early adopter hurt me in this case since I was about 40% through my first playthrough before the "mess" that this achievement is was discovered. I have always been of the opinion that the ONLY case an achievement should be secret is if its description or title gives away plot details. Not only did this achievement not meet that criteria, it is also missable, which makes it worse. But that's another topic for another day. Again, thanks again to Smash41!

It's only possible to speak to Reyes ONCE at the fifth conversation. Using the word "only once" versus "twice" regarding Reyes seems like a fallacy. How could you recommend talking to Reyes twice when it's only possible to talk to her once at the fifth conversation?

By MajimaActual on 14 Mar 2013 03:05
I just got the achievement, and I didn't talk to Whitman at the begining before upgrading my axe, I was past that point before I realized it was part of the achievement. I figured i'd still have the rest of the conversations just in case there was an option to play the story again without having to find all collectibles again and thought maybe the conversations would carry over. well after the last conversation i had it popped, and im positive i didnt talk to whitman before upgrading the axe, i did miss that part.

It, at 5, you talk to Reyes before talking to Jonah, you will be unable to talk to Jonah. I talked to all but Jonah and couldn't do so any more before heading out. Also, while the prompt might appear twice for Reyes, she only has one speech to share.

This will not pop for me. That's twice more through counting every part of every conversation, tried deleting cache and title update reloading them and different save spots. It's as though xbl thinks I already have it. Crap Achievement anyway. 5gs. Not like I was hitting 60 three times in MP.

I did read this guide but was so into the game that I remembered the thing about Whitman only AFTER I upgraded the axe. I reloaded but it was too late. I tried to talk to him but he only said something I did not actively trigger with X.

I did everything afterward and was really surprised when the achievement popped after the last dialogue. I did not think I would get it.

Just to confirm I could only speak to Reyes for #5 once. However, she did talk to me unprompted when I approached her. If yo add that and the 'press x' conversation that I then had, that might be the two conversations the OP is referring to. Maybe that first conversation (which is about hoisting the engine) didn't autoplay for the OP?

@maxbybakablack - if you missed one, you have to start a new game. There's no way to go back and get a conversation you missed. I had to do this, because I started playing Day One before anyone even knew what was required for the achievement.

thankfully i changed slots and kept my save from that point just in case. i should have just quit to the menu and reloaded when i noticed, as i'm sure that would have caused the X prompt to reappear. after finishing the game i went back to that save and Jonah had an X. luckily it was the next to last dialogue point as all i had to do was go back through the endurance and then come do the last dialogues and the achievement popped right after talking to the last person.

Son of a bitch! I beat the game last night, looked this up and realized I missed it. Note to developers: if you're going to have missable achievements DON'T FUCKING MAKE THEM SECRET ACHIEVEMENTS! Looking them up on here before even playing a game? Sure I could do that. Except a lot of games put spoilers for the unlocked secret achievement description.

I can't believe I didn't know about this achievement before I played the game angry I honestly figured the secret achievement was 100% completing. Look's like I have to play threw again. Already had to play threw from start for the zip line and pull enemy off ledge achievements (at least didn't require more than an hour). Here is to third start of the game toast I will do this before grinding my MP. I finished SP months ago and just came back to start MP and noticed this. Damn my platinuming OCD!

The Jonah thing happened to me at the beach. I reloaded from last check point and was able to talk to him, but not the others. I hoped theirs saved. I haven't saved on another file or anything I just been playing straight through.

And the 6-8 hour speed run through. Must have taken awhile to complete the zip line achievement because I am at #5 with like 3 hours on easy just blitzkrieging through.

By sdothollis on 30 Jul 2013 05:01
Done. I think it can easily be done in 4 hours if you have played the game through before and know what you are doing. That is how long it took me and I died A LOT because I was just running threw like a maniac. I didn't do any upgrades either, if you stop and make a couple quick ones to your guns, add pain tolerance and climbing agility -- maybe a couple others -- it would probably actually make you go through quicker.

I went through and updated the guide.

1. Put in bold and moved to top that the first conversation with Whitman isn't required.
2. Changed the number of conversations needed with Reyes to 1 due to feedback.
3. Deleted the part about dying before an autosave as its not relevant.
4. General spelling and formatting.

I think it's pretty much complete now and should net you the achievement.
It's annoying that this has 2 negative votes - don't know what else I can do.

A clear, comprehensive guide. I followed it and carefully checked off each step, including the first. Didn't pop. cry

I'm not sure what went wrong, but I did notice that I never got the TR saving prompt after the mentioned # of conversations, even though the X stopped showing up at that point.

As much as I liked the game and in fact did most of it in one sitting, I don't know if I'm willing to go through the entire thing again for a 5G achievement. If I get every other achievement then sure but if that doesn't eventuate then yeah I don't see it happening. It's just so easy to miss if you're not paying attention.

In this save file, i completly ignored whitman at the beginning for science (before getting 50 salvage AND after upgrading the axe) , and the achievement STILL popped at the beach at night. So my VERY FIRST conversation was with roth.

So can you please edit your guide, and remove the first step? There is nothing "to be safe".

@iRicKoCheT did you talk to Whitman two different times on the first encounter? 1) before you get 50 salvage and 2) after you get 50 salvage, but before you upgrade the axe; this is tripping up a lot of people

On my second playthrough now (was not aware of this achievement and what you had to do - was too late for me then; plus I didn't get the 10 zipline kills). I spoke to Whitman before collecting the salvage - four prompts. After collecting, but before upgrading, I tried speaking to him again, but never got a prompt. I'm continuing based others' comments about it not seeming to matter.

I also didn't speak to Whitman at the start by the gate and still got the achievement on my first play through.

EDIT - Just noticed Elyoh and Paul Doyle have confirmed this already just above.

Unlocked today using the guide as it is currently shown in the initial post.
T
he only thing I will add is during the 5th section. (point 5 on the guide)
I was only able to talk to Reyes who is fixing the machine gun on the boat just the once. (I quickly made a duplicate save here just in case)

But carrying on and only speaking to her once...the achievement unlocked after completing the guide.
Not sure if someone else that is going through the guide could confirm this is the case just to prevent possible confusion in the future.

To confirm. I only talked to Reyes once during point 5 in the guide.

Good job, and screw this 5GS achievement I'm done w/ you! :P What a pain to have to replay just for this. At least it's such a good game I still had fun playing it again.

WARNING - Possible Glitch: 5. After coming back from the Galleon and before heading to the Endurance speak to Jonah [4 Times].

I pressed X and i must've been near the campsite AND Jonah at the same time because he started talking to me while the campsite popped up and then after i left the campsite menu there was no more X prompt for me to be able to continue talking to him. I was hoping that it counted since there was no more possibility to talk. I waited until the credits finished and still no achievement, so be careful on this one...

Two things to clarify:

1 - You do not have to talk to a person again if you should die or whatever between a conversation and an "auto-save point". The save symbol (TR at right bottom) shows up after you have heard all talks from one specific person at a specific point in the game. So you talk three times to Jonah, autosave, you talk three times to Sam, autosave, and so on. But I realized that you are able to talk again if you die or quit (for example, I talked to Roth four times, the game autosaves, I saved again at the camp fire and quit. The next day I was able to talk again to him, but no autosave appeared at the end).

2 - For conversation number 5 you only have to talk once to Reyes. When I approached her, an X appeared above her, but then she talked a bit without me pressing a button and the X disappeared. After that I was able to press X. Also other crew members talk a bit before you press X but with Reyes the X button shows up for a second making you believe she is talking because you have pressed X. Just to let you know :P

You can always look for the little red exclamation point emblem on the achievement that means it is missable when you start a game. Luckily, this is at least a good one that isn't so much of a pain to play again.

I didn't know about this achievement until after the first opportunity to talk with Whitman (when getting the axe for the first time and opening the door). I still spoke to everyone on every opportunity after this and still got the achievment.

So therefore I can confirm you do NOT need to do step 1 of this guide. By all means do it just to be safe but don't be downhearted if you miss that step.

Perfect stuff. You definitely don't have to talk to Whitman at the start, if another confirmation is really required

I don't know if the collectibles you get affect your completion percentage you see when you load your file or not, but as a reference for those who might be wondering, I got this achievement to pop at 65%. And if you're just speed-running until the end of this achievement, it'll likely take you closer to 6 hours as opposed to 6-8 (I skipped all skipable cut scenes and for the most part, only did stuff to aid in the progress for this achievement). Thumbs up from me.

I am posting this to make it very clear to anyone who glances at Smash41's post that you DO NOT HAVE TO talk to Whitman at the dual crank door.

I followed this guide and the achievement still unlocked. The chatterbox guide is at the bottom of the page. It is a picture guide and is worded differently, which may help anyone who needs clarification on the spots where you can talk to people. However it doesn't tell you how many times you need to talk to each person like Smash41 does. I suggest keeping his open as well if you choose to use the picture guide, so you can be sure of how many times you need to talk to each person.

All credit goes to Xbox 360 Achievements users Tyger7 and PureRuby.

EDIT: I don't want this to come across as an attack on Smash41's solution. It is an excellent and very detailed solution which will net you the achievement. I just wanted to emphasize that his first conversations with Whitman at the dual crank door are not required and that if you miss them not to worry.

There are times in the game where you can talk to people from the Endurance crew. There will be an  icon above their heads. Keep talking to them until it doesn't show the prompt anymore. You should see the game saving in the lower right hand corner of the screen when this happens. This is a missable achievement if you don't remember to do it when the time comes. Also remember that if you die or reload your checkpoint, don't forget to talk to them again if it starts you near them. Talking to everyone on this list will get you the achievement. It is possible that only the conversations that lead to the game saving are required, but it's better to play it safe than sorry.

Highly Missable Achievement Warning

Conversation Set 1: After you obtain a med pack and heal up Roth, there will be a brief cut scene and he will give you a climbing tool. Keep talking to him while he is sitting by the fire.

Conversation Set 2: During a cut scene, Roth will talk to you about sacrifice. After the scene he will sit on a chair by the fire. Talk to him here.

Conversation Set 3: After quite a while playing through the game, you will be able to talk to 3 survivors after meeting up with them at the beach area. Talk to all three until you can no longer do so.

Conversation Set 4: You will be given a new bow on the beach. Once this happens, keep talking to the guy who gave it to you. Then go towards the other members of the group (Whitman and Sam. There is a roof with a blue tarp on it, and they are under it. After that, you must go to the boat where you first talked to the people in the above conversation set. Talk to the lone girl there.

Conversation Set 5: After finally getting the tools needed for the Survivors, it will be night time on the beach. Under the blue tarp roof again, you'll find the last few conversations. The last one will be with Jonah a little ways towards the next objective.

This trophy is highly missable.

You have to talk to the Endurance crew whenever you have the chance to do so, before continuing the story. They will have a prompt above their heads if you can have a conversation with them. Just talk to them each time until the prompt disappears.

Here's a list of conversation opportunities:
Thanks to PowerPyx and JimmyHACK
Note: Sometimes characters will have dialog amongst themselves. During this time you can't talk to them. If a prompt doesn't appear when you are next to them, it's most likely that they will have some lines before you can talk.
Note 2: After you had every conversation with that character, the TR symbol will appear and game will auto-save.
Note 3: Conversation #2 is confirmed to be not needed for the trophy, but there have been recent reports that people are not earning the trophy because they either missed or skipped it. So have that conversation as well just in case.

#1 - Coastal Forest - After Lara and Whitman try to open the large gate, talk to Whitman before searching for 50 pieces of salvage. If you've already found at least 50 pieces of salvage, do NOT walk away from him until you have all available conversations.
#2 - Coastal Forest - Right after #1, talk to Whitman after you've found at least 50 pieces of salvage, before upgrading the axe. If you still can't get him to talk, upgrade the axe and try talking to him while he is waiting by the crank. - Thanks to mjc0961 for the info.
#3 - Mountain Village - You'll find Roth getting attacked by wolves. After the scene, you'll need to get Roth's bag back. Roth will give you a climbing axe when you return and tell you to climb the rocks in front of you. Instead get back and talk to him.
#4 - Mountain Village - Shortly after getting the Rope Arrows you will get back to Mountain Village and meet Roth again. Talk to him before you use the zipline and search for the pilot.
#5 - Shipwreck Beach - After the events at Gondola Transport, you'll reach Shipwreck Beach. Before you go searching for the item, talk to Sam, Reyes and Jonah.
#6 - Shipwreck Beach - After you found the item and get back to camp, Whitman will show up and soon after you'll get a new bow. Talk to Whitman, Sam, Jonah and Reyes at the beach camp, before you make your way to Endurance. Reyes is on the boat.
#7 - Shipwreck Beach - After coming back from the Endurance, talk to Whitman, Reyes and Jonah, before you go to Research Base.

!!! Attention !!! The achievement is easy to miss.
Be sure to follow these steps as you progress through the game, otherwise you'll have to start over.
Actions must be taken once you get to the 2nd camp “Ruins in the Forest”, 4th camp “Plateau near the Village”, and 13th camp “Coast of Sorrows”.

If you don't see the autosave icon blinking in your first two conversations with Whitman, don't worry, that's how it should be.

Perhaps point 2 will not be active, that is, the conversation icon above Whitman’s head does not appear. Then you just need to wait 15 minutes and it will appear. Do not improve the beater before talking to him.

Please note that you only need to talk 7 times (several times with certain characters until the dialogue prompt above them disappears, and before and after certain events)

1 Ruins in the forest before searching for spare parts

2 Ruins in the forest after finding spare parts (and before opening the gate)

3 Plateau near the village after helping Roth

4 Plateau near the village after receiving the rope

5 Shore of Sadness when you first arrive at the location (3 people)

6 Shore of Sorrows before visiting the remains of the ship Endurance (4 people)

7 The Shore of Sadness after visiting the remains of the Endurance (3 people)
