How to unlock the Former Adventurer achievement in Tomb Raider - Definitive Guide

There are a few things to getting this achievement.

First you have to earn some skill points to unlock the ability.
It is in the first set of skills.

Second, how to pull it off. When an enemy goes to melee attack you, press B and a direction to dodge the attack. If timed correctly a QTE will appear. You will have 2 circles appear on the screen. When the larger one has shrunk down in the smaller on press Y to do the counter attack.

Third, and the main key to getting this is making sure they are incapacitated. If the enemy falls to the floor and have a Y prompt appear above him, he is incapacitated. If he doesn't you will have to do the counter move again, until the Y prompt appears above him.
Depending on the enemy and how much armour they are wearing will dictate how many counters you will have to do.

Last, now you have incapacitated them, finish them off using a finisher. To do this follow the prompt and press Y. You will get more XP killing them this way so it worth doing.

You can work on this during the main story or after in free roam.

If you are having trouble doing none lethal counters try doing the dodge counter pressing down and left plus B or down and right plus B

I found dodging that way makes you stab them in the knee,

Up and either direction makes you kill them.

Some people have had problems with enemies not spawning once they have finished the game. I recommend you try your hardest to get this done during the story, to try and avoid this problem.

Good guide. Just a note, you don't have to press Y and finish them that way. You only have to incapacitate them.

I've been running back and forth between Mountain Village, Shanty town and everywhere in between and can't seem to find any more enemies. Very frustrating

Me too. I've 100% and can't find enemies anymore. Guess I'll need a bit of a 2nd playthrough to get this one.

I don't think so. I got it on my second playthrough but I wasn't keeping track of how many times it took to get it. I think I did 25 in the second playthrough and also some on the first.

If you're near the end of the game and still don't have this achievement, don't sweat it. I don't want to spoil anything but very close to the end, there's a point where you are rushed by many, MANY sword-weilding dudes, all of whom are prime targets for this achievement.

So you have to press b and then y and that's it, or b and then y and then y again when theyre down
0
0
By Tan110688 on 31 Mar 2013 23:47
The B is to dodge. It must be timed right with an enemy trying to melee you. If the timing is right (I.e., they are at the top of their swing) , then you'll get a quick time prompt for Y that also must be timed right. Once you've done that they should be down ( which is all that is needed to count toward Cheevo). Killing them when they have the Y prompt over them is convenient to get them out of you way to do next dodge. But, it's not required for this.

got to a point where there just were zero enemies in the world. So I recommend HIGHLY trying for this during the regular game play. I didn't start until near the end since most of my kills were from a distance. And I got screwed....

if you upgraded and heve the dodge kill does that count to ?? killing them after dodging ?

This was starting to annoy me.
I found that after upgrading to the dodge kill and finishing the game, I was still able to incapacitate enemies WITHOUT killing them.

Shantytown still had enemies jotted about the place. The first Dodge B/Quicktime Y wouldn't incapacitate them but the second one would. I found that holding Down when pressing Y seemed to allow an arrow to the leg rather than the face (thus not killing them), but I could be wrong - It could have been random. Just be patient and you will get it!

I would like to add that I used BeautifulAnubis's comment to get this. I had finished the storyline 100% (along with 100% of collectibles). As of this time, or patch, it looks like you can go back to Mountain Village section (Village Overlook and Village Plateau fast travel camps) and find plenty of guys with bows and swords. I got a decent amount near the end of the game but I had to do 7-10 in the Mountain Village to get it to pop. Good luck!

I just got this real annoying one by travelling back to shanty town (when you hear the music drumroll it means there are still enemies) when you stand close to them they WILL melee you thus giving you the chance to get this without 2nd playthrough.

Para los que no hablan ingles: nada más tienes que incapacitarlos, no tienes que matarlos para que cuenten y se usa cn_B y luego cn_Y. No te preocupes, el juego te da indicaciones.

Currently I've done 8 of these but when the enemy is on the ground and I press Y, I either use an arrow to kill him or shoot him with a gun in the head if I've a gun in my hand. Does this count? Because I'm almost sure I should have this achievement by now. Have done 8 of these AFTER I finished the story and about 30 in the game itself.

I've earned the achievement today after I started a new playthrough.
The first option I got to get this skill was right before my first enterance at Shantytown, were I got most of these. After I escaped from the caves (with the green gas) I got the last few needed.

Got the 1st incapacitated enemy in the cliffside villiage. The 25th incapacitated enemy before the fall to shanty town. There's five spare enemies for me before shanty town. Couldn't counter the molotov guy. All he did is kick.

Roll around if the enemy has a gun. Get with in melee distance while they shoot that clip. They will melee you most of the time. Repeat.

@FFX Brotherhood

I can confirm that. I tried on a single shield enemy
over 40 times (incapacitating him each time but not killing him) consecutively, letting him get back up in between each incapacitation. Didn't get the achievement. Therefore it has to be on 25 different enemies.

Near the survivors camp, or Mountain village or the Shanty town? Not sure of the name. It has a helicopter in it (spoilers to follow) Where Lara cauterizes her wounds.

The solution says the needed skill is in 1st set of skills. That is not correct. Tier I has Dirty Tricks, but that won't get you the achievement. Also, the moves you describe is dodge counter. That is a Tire II skill. This means you have to buy several Tier I skills before you can unlock the dodge counter.

I tried to incapacitate 2 guys multiple times and that didn't work. Around the area in Shanty town where you see Grim and you get ambushed, those Solarii that rappel down; I just left them alive but kept Incapacitating them and letting them get back.

Didn't work, so I assume this has to be done on 25 different enemies. Can anyone else confirm?

Even if you completed the game and maxed everything out, it is still possible to get this achievement without a second playthrough. I went to the Mountain Village level after finishing the game to see if any guys were there and all that I encountered were guys with swords and compound bows. Perfect scenario. All I did was find enemies and made noise. I got close so they would engage to fight me with their swords. As soon as they try to hit me, I Dodge Countered them NOT Dodge kill them. You got to stab their knees first until you get the Y prompt to kill them that's when you know you incapacitated them. After they crawl around just kill them. I tried Shanty town and it's impossible since they just shoot you. I recommend starting at the Mountain Village level Base Camp Village Overlook and work your way down and also checking out Survivors camp. I found quite a few guys at these locations. I had already beat the game with everything 100% so it doesn't affect anything. I do think if you die after dodge countering enemies several times, they won't count unless the game saved. The reason I say this is because if you die, the enemies will be in the same place before you died so you gotta do the action all over again to count. Once it saves, then your dodge counter will add to the previous ones you've done. Timing for the Dodge Counter is the key to this achievement. I hope the locations I recommended and how to get it helps and clarify some of the confusion. :)

@mercenaryfoot9 - I believe it is roughly linked to your % complete in the area. After my 1st play through, I went to Shanty Town (which was 100%) and there were no enemies, but other areas that were not 100%, still had a few Solari. In the end, it was just easier to go as fast as possible to Shanty town in a 2 nd play through, not picking up anything that wasn't right in front of me and only upgrading as much as needed to get Dodge skill. That means 7 skill points (less preorder & trivia challenge bonuses) -6 to unlock Tier I and one in dodge skill. I also advise not unlocking dodge kill until right before you face Storm guards or armored guys because you will tend to kill them to easily by stabbing them in neck instead of knee. Same is true for the kill finesse skill, I.e., wait to upgrade. I hope that helps.

The above guides are great, I figured I would add a video guide for those that prefer video. Also I would advise you to ONLY get the first of the Dodge Counter skills. DO NOT get the mastery skill where you can instantly kill them. The video I chose, I thought was pretty good (not my own), and he speaks to the same basically. Once you have purchased the first skill, you can hit B to dodge right after they start swinging their weapon at you and you should get the quick time event to press Y. If they are a low armor enemy or you've worked them down a little, then they will drop to the floor with a Y finishing move, and this is the incapacitate part.
Hope that provides some clarity for any still having trouble. Focus on your kill achievements early in the game and you should be fine.

Nice video, thumb's up. The video stresses killing enemies with ranged weapons and only going after the guys who melee. But I found that if you rush a gun- or bow-weilding dude and melee him once with "Y," he will then engage in melee combat and can serve as another mark for this achievement. It became an issue for me near the end of the game.

Another note: I thought I did about 50 of these and the achievement wouldn't pop. I then switched to the bow and after only a couple more, I got it. So while you are able to combo dodge and stab them in the leg with an arrow while any weapon's equipped, I think you mainly get credit toward this achievement when the bow is equipped. In the video you have other weapons equipped and you clearly got the cheevo, but I had to use the bow. I haven't confirmed this but it may be something to consider if it's not popping.

Good to know. I take no credit for the video, I simply found it on YouTube and it helped me so I shared it here. Not sure about the bow, but it wouldn't hurt to focus on that weapon. It was my weapon of choice most of the time so I guess that might be why it worked smoothly for me?

Then I try with bow like you said, and I get it after 2 kill :)) I think the bow is neccesary. Sorry for my bad english :)

just started another playthrough for this and yours is right on......if you kill them before you incapacitate them its a waste...so no kill dodges works great so far ...have about ten and just got to mountain village....now it you fix the glitch shooting them from the rope lines...you would be god

If like me you maxed out your skills before getting this achievement, i found a way so that Lara always incapacitates before killing the enemies.

I would stand still and wait for a melee enemies to rush me, then dodge when the animation of them swinging their weapon starts (B without a direction, its not needed) then the quick time event appears, if you can press y as soon as the two circles meet and i do mean as soon as she will stick an arrow in their knee or incapacitate them.

if you let the QTE go on for too long Lara will go for the insta-kill move.

p.s you can make bow wielding enemies use melee if you rush them, helps to get more melee enemies further in the game.

hope this helps!

Thanks for the solution, it helped as I was in the same boat with you upon finishing the game. However, even though I was aware of this achievement and I was trying my best while playing the game, it hadn't unlocked when I finished it. Then I read in another forum that weapon stuns sometimes don't register but If you use the bow it always does. Low and behold 3 stuns with the bow in shantytown after finishing the game with maximum bow and skills and I unlocked it. I mention this because you may want to add it to your solution as well. Regards

To use a dodge counter, you must first obtain the skill through the Brawler skill tree. There are upgrades for this, but you don't have to worry about not being able to get the achievement if you upgrade. They still count. To use this skill, when a melee enemy attacks you, press  to dodge, and then the  when prompted.

Note: This must be done to different enemies. You cannot repeat this over and over again on the same enemy.

Dodge Counter is one of Lara’s second tier Brawler skills that you won’t be able to get until later in the game. After you learn it, get close to enemies and press when they are about to attack you physically, this will slow time down and a circle will appear on screen. Simply press at right time to incapacitate your enemies. You can tell that you've incapacitated an enemy successfully if a finisher prompt appears over their head. You can finish the enemies then, which not only gives you extra experience but also works towards the Down and Dirty trophy. Dodge Counter must be done to 25 different enemies, incapacitating the same enemy 25 times doesn't work.

Try to get this trophy before you finish the game and start to incapacitate any easy enemy you find as soon as you learn the skill, as enemies in post game have very varying spawn rates and can be hard to come across. Also try to earn it before you learn Dodge Kill skill, so you don't accidentally kill the enemy instead of incapacitating him.

Dodge Counter only works on melee attackers so don’t try to do it against enemies that are shooting at you with guns, even if you are standing next to them. You can, however, make them attack you physically, if you attack them with your climbing axe. They will stop shooting momentarily and try to hit you with their weapons' butts or their melee weapons, before they continue shooting.

Another thing you should be careful about is that some enemies later in the game will have protective armor on their legs, so it will take more than one strike to incapacitate them.

You just need to hit him in the leg with an arrow, and then finish him off. If you take the instant kill skill while dodging, it will almost always work and it will not count.

You can upgrade ALL combat skills. This will not hinder the achievement.
When dodging (button ) two static circles and one narrowing circle light up. If you reap at the moment when the shrinking circle is between two static ones, the ATTACK WITH evasion required for this achievement will work.
INSTANT KILL only works when the shrinking circle coincides with a smaller one.

Video just in case: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sFeER5-WqM

And I’ll add from myself: it’s best to complete the achievement on targets such as archers, samurai, etc., since you will have a greater chance of getting to them untouched. You just need to dodge by pointing the left stick to the right or left by pressing more , when you are attacked in close combat. Then press , but to achieve it, you need exactly those moments when the enemy falls after your blow, and the finishing icon appears above his head ( ).
