How to unlock the Shopaholic achievement in Tomb Raider - Definitive Guide

*****
UPDATE as of April 9, 2013: It has been confirmed that the General is NOT needed for this achievement with the newest patch. This solution is no longer necessary, but I will leave it up for any discussions and for the most up-to-date information.

For those that want the General, he now costs zero salvage, but you must reach Prestige 2 to be able to unlock him.

*****

PREVIOUS SOLUTION AND INFORMATION UPDATE:

The patch has been released by the devs to make the General available when you hit Prestige 2 for 0 salvage. I would like confirmation on whether or not this glitch still works once the patch is still installed.

I can confirm that XP cannot be boosted while offline (disconnected from XBL). So, if this patch makes the glitch unusable, there is nothing that can be done.

What I have so far:

I got the menu option to pop up for The General, but no check mark appeared and there is no way to verify he was purchased since he is now 0 salvage.

However, I just used the glitch to purchase the Archer as a test character. It took the 5000 salvage and put a checkmark under the lock symbol (I am only rank 41, it requires 52). Maybe there is hope after all.

In conclusion, I would like some help confirming:

1 - Is the General still needed for this achievement?
2 - Does this glitch still work for the General even though a checkmark no longer appears on the character icon?

*****

ORIGINAL SOLUTION:

Ty-Rex (gamertag Tylord824) has posted the newest and easiest way to earn this achievement over at X360A (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?t=43...). Because he doesn't really use TA, I am posting this for him. All credit for this solution should be given to him!

"You need to have one survivor character not bought yet. Then, go to the character selection screen and go to the Solarii section and put the selector box over the general. Switch back to the survivor side and put the box over a character you can buy, but haven't bought yet. Now hit "Y" and "A" at the same time on the controller. You'll switch to the Solarii side and it will ask if you want to buy the survivor character you were hovering over before. The thing is, let's say you're hovering over a character that costs 3000 and you hit yes on the general, it will take away 10000 instead and actually highlight the locked character.

If this all seems confusing to you, just watch this video that should help clear things up.

Now, just remember, you need to be level 60 so you can buy all the guns, attachments, and Lara, then buy all the guns, attachments, and characters except for 1 survivor. Then do what I posted above to buy the general, and afterwards go and buy the last remaining survivor. If it works, the achievement will unlock once the last survivor is bought after the general.

Here is a picture confirming that this works. Thanks to ChaosChao for testing and confirming it works and also to the other peeps in the thread who were gonna test it."

UPDATE: As more and more people get around to doing this, they are unlocking and confirming that this method DOES work.

I was following that thread too and tried the method tonight and sure enough I got the achievement once I bought everything after doing the glitch! Saved about 35 hours! Too bad I can't actually use the General...

True, but they will hopefully make the General free in TU3 so you can have your achievement now and the skin later!

Just grind out salvage using the XP method, but instead of going for the med packs, just grab the salvage boxes for 20 minutes.

^you absolutely CANNOT be banned for this. you can only get banned if you are changing the way the game works, via outside gamesaves or a modded xbox. This is merely an exploit that already exists in the game; and trust me, even if it was ban-able, there are way worse exploits out there.

First, Gears is a different game. Second, we would need more info to determine anything. But Gears has nothing to do with this game or achievement.

How can't you get banned for this? Or any trouble at all?
I mean if you have all the achievements, and if people take a look at your ingame profile and if they see that you haven't prestiged once, they might get suspicious. And it really seems like no one can really confirm, that you will and can't get banned for this.

Unfortunately, I only had Lara and the General left to unlock. I put the selector on the general and the selector on Lara. Pressed the buttons together while on Lara and it switched to the general and asked if I wanted to purchase him, but kept giving me a warning that it required Prestige 3 to do it and would not allow me to. Tried it several times, and it never worked.

Still can be done and ... you can do it at any given time during leveling, it will register General purchase. I tried the glitch way back around lvl 20 and it got me the purchase. Then at lvl 60 I finished all other upgrades and characters and ding the chivo popped!

I'm level 36 and I wanted to try this. I bought the General, he still is locked and costs 10000 but I hope the game will remember that I bought him already. I don't plan on going prestige, as cool as it sounds, MP is not something I'm interested in, especially on Tomb Raider. Thank you Hunter, saved me plenty of hours.

The blue check mark always disappears using this method once you buy him and then exit the game.

I'll need someone to confirm whether this glitch still works even though you can now get the General at Prestige 2 (nice job devs, not that big of a difference roll).

I've been keeping up with the patch on the forum and it's confirmed that the update removes The General from the Shopaholic achievement. You don't need him. Get to level 60, buy all available characters (expect the General) and weapons/upgrades, job done.

Problem is, for me at least, the update has reset everything I've done in multiplayer. I was half way to my third prestige, too. What the hell?

Can I reach the level requested for that weapon (54) and only buy the related upgrades?

A big thank you to the developers for setting the cost of purchasing The General to zero thereby excluding the need to buy the character for the achievement to pop. Perhaps this change is an admission that they realise the multiplayer side of this game isn't up to standard and forcing gamers to endure the constant hopping and jumping about up to Prestige 2 is just too cruel!

I hadn't prestiged once at that point but since you have to get lara at 60 it makes no difference other than you don't have to lose all your upgrades and pointlessly prestige. of course that would only matter if you actually like playing this game in multiplayer (nobody does) and wanted to keep your stuff and still get 100% achievements

For anyone not getting the achievement when they think they bought everything, I had the same thing. Turns out when you launch a MP game you can buy characters as well. Totally forgot about that. Turned out I missed two characters!

I can confirm from myself and another player that you DO NOT need to buy the General or even reach Prestige. Once you reach Rank 60 for the first time, that is enough.

Confirming as of 5/19/2022 the General is not needed for this achievement - only buy everything else but him.

about my first post:
i think this method is very very visible. anyone goes in the achievment case of the player see the shopaolic unlocked, after this, if anyone goes on the multiplayer stats can see only level 60 (no prestige) and think this is impossible.
= Ban.
what do you think about this?

@ xhunter. Don't worry about the negative votes. You could post a solution how to cure cancer and people will negative vote it. Either the just like trolling or they expect a solution to 1k the game for them.

This is a great easy solution to a long grindy problem. Even though I don't need it, doesn't negate its awesome potential to help others.

Can anyone tell me how much salvage I'll need for the compound bow?
I'm currently at Lvl 56 with about 20k salvage, everything available purchased. I know I'll need 20k for the remaining characters but I'm curious how much I'll need for the bow.
So that I don't have to waste anymore time than I need to farming for salvage.

Just wanted to add that i just got the achievement this way, once you get to level 60 you can choose to prestige or keep farming salvage like I had to. After I bought that last upgrade the achievement popped. Great guide and thanks again I was not looking forward to prestigeing three times laugh

Just got 100%, it worked. Just be sure you pay attention to your credit count when you do the glitch, and if it goes down by 10k, you know it should work. I unlocked the general early on, still had to buy half the characters, half the equipment, and I was in my mid level 30's when I unlocked him. Great guide!!!

All you have to do is get to 60 even without using the glitch described. The General is no longer required for the achievement.

as of April 9th 2012, the general is now free for everyone. You only need to hit level 60 once.

With the introduction of title update 3 you will no longer have to grind to prestige 3 level 58 to unlock this achievement. The update is not included in TU2.

A CM for TR
posted this on the TR forums :

Quickly popping in. I think the guys are actually going to make The General free in the next update so that he doesn't count toward this achievement/trophy. I agree it's a TAD difficult to unlock. :P
So if this goes live, you only need to hit level 60 once, and buy every character/weapon upgrade along the way. You do not need to prestige once.

I hope this saved you some time, please up vote.

Remember, it's just a heads up not a solution. Please up vote.

Possibly. But due to him saying its in the "next" title update, which will be TU2, I'm betting TU2. Plus, its a quick fix. It wont take a coder any length of time to change this.

Yes, but if the update has already been submitted to MS (which it has if it is coming out in a few days), there is nothing they can add to it. Also, it says "think." I would hardly call that confirmed.

I believe it was the community manager that wrote this, not a dev. And she wrote she THINKS it'll happen. I believe that TU2 is already live on PSN and therefore I'm pretty sure it won't make it to Xbox TU2. Personally I've stooped ranking up since I hit level 60 and won't do anymore until the change is confirmed or denied. Either way this is not a solution yet.

Why are people arguing with you, it makes no sense, you have supplied some info which could be true, could be false, i know for 1 thing that i will get to level 60 and not prestige thanks to you, if it happens to be true then DAMN you saved me time, if its false then so be it i will carry on, nothing lost.
As this is not a solution normally i wouldnt vote either way but im gonna vote positive just to offset the damn stupid negatives.
Thanks for the heads up pal.

hey guys and girls. I found the best way of boosting this achievement. all i done was go into a private match and went on free for all. then picked the map underground and set it for 20 mins. make sure you have the perk on what allows you to pick up more salvage per crate. There are 5 crates on the underground map and it will give you for each crate between 200-300 salvage. Within 20 minutes of running around the map you will earn between 25,000-27,000 salvage i would recommend finding the best route first, and to know where all the crates are and you will defiantly get the amount as i said. Happy Hunting!

yeah i know just just felt for me it was the best game type but your right it can be on any ame type. when you are boosting xp you won't get a lot salvage. so i liked doing the salvage after i got to lvl 60.

I agree with Mr Teall 100%. This is the absolute best guide for this achievement. The rest are simply too long and go on about getting EXPERIENCE or boosting to LEVEL 60 too much. This is the fastest method I know of to get salvage. You could also set the gametype to 5 min though and get 3000xp per match for "winning" - if you also need the experience.

SLBK Nick - given that salvage is this games currency it is pretty useful that you obtain A LOT of salvage as the achievement states YOU NEED TO BUY EVERY CHARACTER AND UPGRADE. Frankly I don't understand why every guide for this achievement goes on and on about how to boost to level 60 AS THERE IS A SEPERATE ACHIEVEMENT FOR THAT. I Have obtained level 60 and was wondering why no one else has even touched on the subject of gathering salvage when it is apparent you need A LOT of it...

D0PE B0I's solution for leveling to 60 also has details on the Shopaholic achievement: Solution for True Commitment In Tomb Raider

"[SHOPAHOLIC] Unlock all Characters and Upgrades. SADLY WE HAVE TO REACH THE 3rd PRESTIGE AND GET TO LEVEL 58 IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO PUCHASE THE LAST CHARACTER (THE GENERAL) AND HAVE ACCESS TO PURCHASE ALL THE UPGRADES.. THERE IS NO NEED TO BUY ANY UPGRADES UNTIL YOUR 3RD PRESTIGE."

Thanks to D0PE B0I who came up with this method: D0PE B0I

I can confirm that the General is not necessary for the achievement now. I've bought every item and characters and achievement pops, I'm on Prestige 1 Level 58.

I have a solution for the perenially lazy among us. You will need a turbo controller capable of turboing the X button. (And a rubber band). This is certainly not the most efficient in terms of your Xboxes time, but it certainly is in terms of your time.

Start a private match of team deathmatch, make sure to equip advanced looting
maximum rounds, 20 minutes.
Run over to the salvage box, so the X prompt is showing, then set the X button to turbo and rubber band it down.
You will need to come back to your xbox after 20 minutes to either go over to the box for the next round or to set up a new match.
You will get approximately 6800 salvage by the end of the round. So to get the requisite 208.5k will take about 30 rounds or 10 hours.

Note: With the release of latest patch (v1.03 for Retail version, v1.02 for Digital and some EU copies), The General character is no longer needed for this trophy. This also applies to PS4 version of the game.

This will be the last multiplayer trophy you will get as one of the characters requires you to reach level 60, max level.

Don't forget to collect as much salvage as possible, whether during normal play or boosting sessions. You will need around 36,000 Salvage for all characters (thanks to Makino for confirmation). You won't need to collect salvage for weapon upgrades, if the glitch below works for you, though.

This trophy could be glitched in a good way. The trophy unlocked for many people who posted in this thread after they've bought all characters (minus The General) and nothing else. Just buy every available character including Lara, who is unlocked at level 60, quit the game and reload. When the game starts and checks your trophy data, Shopaholic should unlock.

For PS4 version, please check this thread: shopaholic clear instructions 9 (wrk confirmed as of patch 1.04) for a glitch that lets you unlock the trophy before you reach level 60. This glitch may not work on PS3 version.

To get everything upgraded and all purchase characters in multiplayer, you will have to reach level 60. You will need a lot of salvage in order to get everything. There is an update coming to make The General a free character, meaning you will not have to prestige 3 times . Will update after patch. Once you get to 60, do not prestige.

Play the Rescue Mode and just keep capturing the kits to give yourself easy experience and salvage.

Gametype: Rescue
Faction: Survivors
Kits: 20
Time: 20 minutes
Map: Underground

You can go to the link HERE which has a video and instructions. Thanks to D0pe B0i for clarifying the information and testing it.

Check the link below to learn about a way to get the achievement before the patch comes out.

Buying General before Prestige 3 by Ty-Rex

0

To purchase the last hero you need 3rd prestige and level 58. You gain prestige when you reset your level to level 1 after reaching level 60. Before receiving the 3rd prestige, do not buy upgrades as they will disappear when you move to the next prestige.

The achievement is obtained with a boost of about 30 hours.

Now this achievement has been fixed, it is not necessary to achieve 3 prestige, it is no longer necessary to buy the last character for the “bad guys” (to access it, by the way, you now need 2 prestige, not 3), so buy characters in any order, once you reach level 60 it will become available to you The last character needed for this achievement is Lara Croft!!!

All modifications can be purchased at level 58, when one of the bows becomes available for sale (each modification costs 5,000 spare parts). All (except the Warlord - you need 3rd prestige) characters for multiplayer can be bought at 60th - Lara. And now a little trick that will save time and not bother with getting the 3rd prestige.

It is very important that at least one character from the Survivors (the same Lara) is NOT purchased. In the character store you need to select the Warlord from the Brotherhood by clicking switch to Survivors, select Lara, and to check, switch between factions a couple more times so that either Lara or the Warlord are on the screen. Switch to Lara again and press at the same time + - a screen with the Commander and a purchase confirmation message should appear on the screen - answer in the affirmative. The spare parts have been spent, but the Leader will remain closed until the 3rd prestige, but there is a fact of purchase specifically for the achievement. Now all that remains is to purchase the missing modifications for weapons, if this has not been done previously, as well as Lara and other unpurchased characters. Voila - "Shopaholic / Shopaholic" received. IMPORTANT ! When you exit the online game, the above action with “purchase” of the Commander will be canceled, so make sure that you have enough spare parts for all modifications and all characters.
