How to unlock the Superstar achievement in Torchlight - Definitive Guide

You should be around level 19-20 fame simply by playing through the story mission and the side quests offered throughout your journey. After killing the final boss, a bonus dungeon will open along with another 3 quests.

This dungeon is full of tougher enemies and great loot. Each floor has at least 2 champion monsters on it, so couple this with the 3 quests you'll get on each floor, and that's thousands of fame per floor. I got the achievement on floor 9 so didn't really have to grind much at all. Plus you level up very fast and get some great gear.

It can be very advantageous to put 10 points into the "Adventurer" skill that increases the amount of XP and fame you get early on to cut down on further grinding time. The achievement unlocks when you reach level 33 fame (though the maximum level of fame is actually level 55).

To clarify I just did this July 2022. If anyone is reading through this thread like me the post about using the new dungeon that unlocks and killing elites and doing the quests is a terrible way to get to max fame (lvl 33)

As others said the far and away best method is buying map scrolls(20-??) And resetting. Few important points I didn't read before starting. If you leave on level one it closes forever, and if you get to level 2 and take the portal is closes forever. The trick is getting from level one to level two and resetting by traveling between the two. There is almost always 3 elites on the small second level so you kill them, travel back to level one, reset, and go back to two.

Important note to save you time as I learned hard way. You cannot town portal out of this place. I recommend coming with like 250 Identify scrolls and send you pet to sell stuff. Also be warned if you're like me and think ah I'll just go to town and upgrade my stuff and start a new map scroll and come back and do this I would advise against. I started first one at level 30 and got about 14 levels in span of 45-60 mins. I decided at 31 fame to go to town. However next map I stead of being level 30 the monsters were now 43. I got double the fame but it took me 3-4x longer to kill them. If you're going for this achievement as fast as possible I'd recommend maxing your build early ao you can do it quickly and just stay in one map the entire time. Obviously 20 might be too low to stay down there forever. The first map when they were low 30s and were giving 3500 fame for fast kills was a sweet spot.

Thats exactly how I got it last night. Just wanted to add the name of that talent that increases fame is called Adventurer, and it increases XP gain and potion effectiveness as well. But I recommend maxing that out early as well.

The amount of fame points to get the achievement is 756,600 - you need this much to reach 33 fame level (Demigod)

Just want to point out that the portal scrolls that you can buy from the lady in town are also a great way to earn fame. There was always at least 5-6 champion monsters total on the two floors.

Who does the third quest come from per level? There are the two givers standing by the entrance to the Shadow (?) Dungeon, but there's no one else there. Does the third come from the old man (Vasman) or Hatch? I have uncompleted quests from them from the main game, so are those blocking the third?

By TheIcemanCometh on 12 Mar 2011 04:22
The third quest is from the wizard standing by the cart to the farthest right side of Torchlight. (the one who wants you to find the embers in each new zone). If you have outstanding quests, that will be blocking him from giving out any more.

Just so that people have an idea, I beat the main game with 20 fame and my adventurer skill maxed out. It took me until level 16 of the new dungeon to reach fame level 33. Although I only had two quest givers per level. The old guy still wanted me to get some ember from the original mine but I couldn't find it, and when I abandoned the quest he kept giving me the same one.

They seem to have patched the speed of the fame gain, as it took me till level 18 to find enough bosses to reach 33. I found being an alchemist and blinking using Ember Phase that I could literally just teleport through the dungeons till I got to the champion monsters.

For those who have old incomplete quests, just abandon them and then you can accept new levels that are "Floor" appropriate.

One quest is to retrieve an item for the goblin. One quest is to kill a hero monster. The third is from the wizard to collect ore but only if you finished all his other quests during the story. If you didn't, you'll need to do those first.

You can buy Map Scroll(20-???) from Triya. This area has a lot of enemies that give you FAME. This is rather hard at times when the enemies overwhelm you.

Good guide, but I agree with the comments about using the map scrolls. The extra dungeon can get a bit crazy depending on your build - and I'd highly suggest using several "20-???" map scrolls that auto level to you if things get too tough/boring.

So, is it quicker to grind the Shadow Dungeon or the Lost Scrolls from the vendor?

I'm currently on floor 26 but I'm fame 18, so over half way with another 9 floors of the main story to go.

@Finknuts. I am noticing that the farther you go in the shadow dungeon, the more fame the champions are worth. I am on floor 9 and getting around 6k for each. I am on normal difficulty with adventurer maxed out.

By OC CPMatthew on 16 Jul 2011 02:07
Doing this on the easiest difficulty, I got it in level 17 or the shadow vault. On some floors, there was 1-2 champions, while on other, I could find 4-5. I had Adventurer maxed out as soon as I could in the main storyline.
Champions were giving me around 7K-8K fame each.
Just really boring, I'm glad to have this one done.

There is one reason and one reason only to give this guide a NEG... You have chubby fingers and accidently slid the mouse too far because your hands were greasy from wotsits you had to give you the energy to walk over to your computer... Good guide, concise and with a little extra info that was really helpful.

Thanks very much!

I just got the achievement. Don't know if what I did is any different then anyone else, but this is what I did. As soon as I reached level 15 I started putting points in Adventurer so by the time I hit Level 23 or so (seeing as you also get a skill point when you rank up in Fame) I had Adventurer maxed. I made sure to take all 3 quests before entering the each level of the main dungeon and cleared out everything on each floor (even though only Champions give you Fame) and took the quest from the Treasure Hunter in town when available. When I completed the main dungeon my Fame was at 22. I did the same thing with the Shadow Vault, making sure to have all 3 quests per floor, and I hit Fame level of 33 on Floor 12.

So for anyone like me who may have set the difficulty too high (I'm on hard, and the difficulty really catches up with you when you get those one-shot mages), keep in mind there isn't actually an achievement for killing Ordrak if you struggle with him, so getting fame via scrolls without killing the final boss it totally ok!

Level up your Adventurer skill all the way as soon as you can. The main story missions are pretty easy on Normal, and you will blow through it with comfort.

Do all side quests along the way, and use the scrolls that unlock bonus portals for faster leveling up.

After the the main storyline is complete, the bonus dungeon opens; now it gets tough, I grinded my way to the 9th floor before I finally died for the first time. You can work your way through it again and it will be easier the second time around, which is when the achievement popped for me.

Started with this method but it was disgustingly slow with the floors being so huge, every floor being harder than the previous one and the bosses being so far apart. The quest xp was bad as well. Instead I got the 20-??? scroll and in the last area before the exit I just killed the bosses and went back to the previous area to have the enemies respawn in the last one. Eventually I got 6.2k-18.6k/area reset and it took 2-3mins tops to kill the bosses and reset. So much better that way!

Expanding on what JustDLeigh said:
Before beginning the grind: ~fame level 20
- Defeat all bosses in the game. This was the last achievement I had left.
- Maximize weapons/armor to the best of your ability. You likely won't be coming back, so having a ton of enchantments on your best gear is important.
- Maximize your attack and attacking options as much as possible. I used the AOE Fireball for the marksman class most of the time, but the skill for increased fame and any regular attack bonuses help as well.
- Buy a 20-?? map scroll, and clear the first floor in it

The grind:
- Go down to floor 2, and make sure to defeat all elite enemies(yellow text, biggest ones). I got around 4000 fame per elite. Playing fast and dangerously works well, and I had a net gain of potions, despite using them often.
- Go back up stairs to floor 1, defeat any elites if they spawn right next to you (it happens rarely), back down to floor 2.
- Pick up things as you go, and only identify any purple/yellow gear you may use. Send everything you won't use with your pet to town.
- If you have to quit the game for a break or otherwise, using 'Exit to Title' will leave you in the same spot in the dungeon, preventing the bosses from increasing in difficulty. It took me around 2 hours of grinding.

The wizard that gives you the ember search quest has a habit of asking you to go to previous floors- just cancel his requests until he asks you to find ember on the floor that matches the other two quest givers.

I was at 18 fame when I completed the story (I only ever did two levels in the sidequest line that you go through a portal in town to find stuff for the rich guy, though). I had 10 in the Adventurer skill, but I still needed to fully clear 17 levels in the bonus dungeon to reach 33 fame. Maybe difficulty affects fame increase? I was on Normal.

I'm on level 9 of the Shadow Vault and Fame 26 only. Two champ mobs per level is too slow for grinding it out actually. I kept falling asleep in the levels. This must be the worst XBLA achievement since Puzzle Bobble's "play for one consecutive hour without dying". :p

Maybe I'll try the dungeon scroll trick.

My character level is 35 and fame is level 25 (around 425K Fame) and I'm only getting around 4K fame per kill in the "scroll dungeons"... and this is with the +20% extra fame from the Adventurer skill.

If the total amount of fame for level 33 is 756,600... I have to kill another 80ish champions... which is 20-30 more scrolls. How much is everyone else getting per champion kill?

I'm playing on Hard difficulty as well. Not sure if that makes a difference...

i can't seem to reproduce the exit glitch where enemies respawn, but i all wanted to share is look out for the big ghost, the green dinosaur, and the big purple spear avatar (james cameron movie) type monster. or just orange names in general, those are the big monsters who give you 4000-5000 fame per kill, so you can skip like 90% of those level 20-?? scrolls.

Through the main storyline, i ended up having 17 fame, which left me halfway there with Fame, this is with me maxing out "Adventurer" as soon as possible.

I tried being as fast as possible with skipping the biggest amount of mobs as possible, and focusing the champion mobs; and this put me at 8 hours and 20 minutes ingame when the achievement popped.

As ponypo2001 mentioned, the achievement will unlock at level 33 fame, and the main storyline should take about half the time of the entire playthrough.

At first i went with the standard "extra" dungeon, that only has 2 champion mobs in it, and after going through 10 levels i felt like i needed a change. I went with buying the "20-???" portal scrolls, and that was a lot faster. These levels consists of 2 levels, that has 5-9 champions mobs on it, and with Adventurer skill, i got a level up on fame per run, leaving me at buying 11 scrolls in total. I managed to run through the two levels in about 10 minutes, and id recommend anyone doing it this way.

It is worth mentioning that i did not complete the associated quests with each level of the "extra" dungeon, it might be faster with doing those

I was level 46 when i popped the achievement

So you just buy the portal scroll, use it to spawn a portal to nowhere, and fight inside? I'd try that.

Nevertheless, I thought the achievement pops at Level 33 fame?

This method went very slow for me. I did a number of 20-? scrolls and got very few champions, only 2 or 3 per level. When I went into the extra bonus dungeon after completing the main storyline, I was getting many champions per level (3-6). Plus the 3 quests on each level which give fame as part of the reward. Went tons faster for me! Anyway, I didn't down vote you since it does seem to work for some people.

The other solutions are great. I did the "20-???" portal scrolls and banged it out pretty quickly. Here are some tips for the grind:

- If you are reading this before starting the game, play on easy. I played on medium and, at that difficulty, the grinding levels will be full of these wizard things that can kill you pretty quickly (see below). You can't switch difficulty after starting the game :(

- While playing the game, pick a weapon class and stick with it. This allows you to dogpile all your ability points into one ability, maximizing your damage. You might need to put a few points into the other abilities in order to use some armor or weapons, but it won't be much (20-30 points, maybe). As far as I can tell, they are only used for combat with particular weapon types and don't affect anything else (e.g. strength doesn't affect how much you can carry, etc.).

- As mentioned in the other solutions, you want to have Adventurer maxed. Use a potion of respec if you need to reassign your points. Have a friend gift you one and it'll be free.

- Whether you are using the special dungeon or 20-??? portal scrolls, ignore as many of the grunts as you can manage and hunt down the larger, fame-giving monsters. You can drastically cut down on the time it takes to grind out the achievement doing this. I also ignored most treasure pickups unless they were close.

- Make haste one of your spells. You can cover ground much more quickly that way and run past a lot of the mobs when looking for the fame monsters. This is useful for the main game as well.

- Give your pet a summon spell as one of its spells. The creatures it brings in make nice distractions for the mobs while you hammer on the fame monsters. Your pet will use it fairly often.

- Try to keep your pet from fleeing by using the "heal all" spell when its health gets low. Pets are pretty much worthless in combat but make convenient distractions. The heal all spell is almost identical to the heal self spell except for a trivial increase in mana cost.

- Your main weapon should restore health on hits. It's best if this is a natural enchantment of the weapon (either when you bought/acquired it or via the enchanter). You can use a gem in a socket for this but it takes a loooong time to get even a decent gem and it will be nowhere near as much health as an enchantment.

- Gems are a waste of time. Just sell them. If you get an item with sockets, buy whatever the gem seller has to fill them. You can get much better results from the enchanter (just remember to quit to dash if you get hosed).

- The better/worse arrows in the inventory are not reliable when you have a lot of enchantments on a piece of equipment. I think they just consider DPS and armor value. Be careful of that when replacing things. Also, you will never complete an equipment set, so don't even bother trying.

- Be careful of the wizard things that summon little skeleton guys at high levels (I forget the name - "dark" something or other). They summon little fast-moving little skeleton guys and cast powerful spells. One at a time they are not that bad but they can be deadly in groups.

- The little energy ball things can also be unexpectedly deadly in large groups. Their attacks make the screen really busy so it's hard to tell when you are getting mobbed.

- Clear out the mobs around a fame monster before tackling it, especially spawners like the gravedigger. If you don't do this, you can get unexpectedly mobbed and it's frustrating to have to run back to where you died.

- Make sure you keep an eye on your health. The game is crazy easy on medium difficulty except for when you get mobbed by tons of baddies and when this happens, you can die surprisingly quickly. When things get hairy, pop off a push-back spell or haste to a safe spot to heal up. Also, don't be afraid to use health potions when you need them since there a lot of them throughout the game.

- If you are doing the bonus dungeon, make sure to complete both quests from the guys by the door, or three if you managed to finish the ember guy quests so you can do them in the bonus dungeon. Before going down the staircase at the end of a level, use a town portal to return to town and complete the quests. When you get new ones, they will be for the next level (which you are about to start).

Happy grinding!

As Bellatrixz said, use the level 20-?? Scroll, but here's the thing I learned after running about 5 or 6 of them.

When you finish the downstairs floor, DO NOT exit the scroll through the portal, just go back upstairs and then back down stairs and the enemies reset! I would just do the bottom floor over and over with anywhere from 1 to 4 champion monsters. I got fame level 27-33 in about 30-40 minutes. Where as 22-27 took me like 6 full runs of 10 minutes each.

I unlocked this by hitting Fame Tier 55. I did try and look it up to find out the maximum for the achievement, but randomly got it while playing. Have read since there are ways to shortcut the process, not sure from personal experience.

To achieve the maximum fame, it must be level 33 (Demigod). You can still gain more levels in fame even though the achievement calls it maximum. This will require you earn 756,000 fame experience points. You earn fame by defeating Champions (rare monster who have specific names). They're usually either bigger than other enemies, or glowing (or both). You should see a couple of them a floor, especially in higher numbered floors. As you level enemies level, as will the fame you get per Champion monster killed. You'll be getting around 10k for each Champion you kill once you're a specific level.

Each class has a specific skill that grants you more experience and fame. You will want to max out right away to save time. This skill is called Adventurer. You'll have to kill roughly 200+ champions to get the max fame level. You can check how many you have killed in your stats screen. You will be able to get this skill, with any class, at level 10.
