How to unlock the Boss Rush Rank S achievement in Touhou Luna Nights - Definitive Guide

The Boss Rush will be unlocked upon defeating the final boss in the Extra Stage. However, you will most certainly not be a high enough level to achieve the S rank. (I was about level 26 when I finished the game)

To earn the S rank, you must complete the Boss Rush in 6 minutes. The final boss alone would take up all of that time at the average player's endgame level, so, that means it's time to get grinding. In the final hallway of the game, 2 screens left from the final boss, are a ton of powerful late game enemies. You will need to start from the right side where the healing vending machine and save point are, clear out this hallway with Thousand Dagger spell spam (remember, freezing time will make it consume TIME instead of MP), refill at the vending machine on the right side, causing the enemies to respawn, and repeat. There IS an EXP item available at the shop, but it is extremely expensive and really only gives you about 1 or 1 and a half worth of hallway clear-outs, and the jewels could come in handy later (read below)

I grinded to level 45 (only took about 1 hr 30 mins from level 26) and was able to complete the Boss Rush in 5min 51sec, so I would consider 45 the minimum requirement. If it's too tough, try grinding to 50 (or even higher!)

As for the Boss Rush itself, Thousand Dagger spam! You may have plenty of jewels from grinding, so sell all of those (I did however keep my Sapphires and Diamonds, as they boost Attack, which could help with the Boss Rush), and purchase TIME upgrades to hold more TIME. The first 3 bosses will absolutely melt under your Thousand Daggers and you will probably clear them out in well under a minute. Bosses 4 and up are where you will need to put in a bit more effort, but again, keep hailing them with Thousand Daggers. There isn't much more to say than that. If you fail to reach the S-Rank, you can always travel back to the endgame hallway and grind more levels.

And one last note. the final boss in the Boss Rush has a lengthy 5-7 second death animation, which DOES count on your clock. Be sure you are still in the 5min 40s range or low 5min 50s range upon defeating her.

Just a question, why selling your jewel to get TIME ? I did the rush with constant spam of thousand dagger, and you barely hold time at all (since it doesn't stop the timer). I recommend keep the jewel instead, since mana regeneration and damage are much more important then time.

concerning the level, third try at level 46, you also level up pretty nicely during the bosses, so start practicing level 45 onward.

My recommended level for this is 38. No need to go higher, just play smart, jump freeze time, thousand daggers, unfreeze time, freeze time thousand daggers, etc repeat till you throw like 5 waves of thousand daggers at the boss (with a 235 time limit on the clock)

then after just use the normal Y variant. If the boss ever uses fireballs just freeze time next to them to normally instantly replenish your TIME, then repeat the above.

@jakez123... 38 isn’t worth the attempt. The truth is that there is a need to go higher to be efficient. You need to have it locked down in your head to perfection to get it done before 40 imo.

Realistically once at 40 I can see just using Boss Rush to grind levels and practice. You'll either unlock it while practicing or get where you need to be.

*update* - I did this at level 42 without watching any speed run videos. I got it at 5:58.31 which was wayyyyy too close.

5:59.91 :D

That was at level 50 grind to get to there isn't too bad if you farm from the extra stage save room. I could have been quicker but I started to panic towards the end and was running out of MP and time.

5:41:48 at level 48. I think i couldve done this at the early 40s but I didn't discover until my second attempt that you get INSANE i-frames when you do your normal time 1000 daggers. No need to use any other form of attack like the OP said. Using that alongside the time and MP consumables make this actually fairly trivial lol

I have really bad reflexes (I could barely do it on lvl 57) and I would like to give a few pointers for anyone who struggles:
1, I only sold my Amethysts, Rubys and the necessary Emeralds to buy every time upgrade. I tried without them a lot but I just ran out every time. It is very true you may never max it out after the first few enemies but still helps a ton when you get a great graze to fill it up as much as you can. Every other jewels I kept from the start of the game.
2, If you have problem even finishing the rush don't grind it for levels in the hope you will make it eventually. You probably won't and you lose tons of time because if you die then you lose the XP you made that far. Grind the end room with the dragons and flying enemies (I tried to do the rush a few times and sometimes I made it but barely, I had to grind the end room until 50 to be able to finish it every time).
3, You have to be very aggressive against the second half of the enemies. Jump in their face and spam whatever you have or they will never die.
4, If you have time always stop and spam daggers. You can do it against early enemies from far and it should lock on. However the vampire girl can block it with her device. For normal dagger spam you can jump in the face of the enemies, you are mostly protected during the spam.
5, There are three cases where you can safely get tons of graze. Without these it is pretty much impossible to get under 6 minutes. Two happens with the blonde girl with the crystals. When she releases fireballs or those shooting rocks stop time and jump between them. The other is when the final form of the last boss pulls a lot of cards(?) under her (it is her first move). Stop time and get under them as close as possible.
+1 Don't feel bad if it seems impossible, you can grind as much as you need.

Consumables!

Yeah, he gets it!

You can always quit the run and return to the lobby checkpoint where you'll have all the items. If you're low on money just sell jewels -- you'll barely notice their effects anyway! Other than that, as stated in the guide, get to lv40 and start running the gauntlet.

Has this been patched and made easier? Did it first try with 5:40, and choked quite a few times getting easy hits in. A level 50 with fewer mistakes could definitely do it under 5 minutes.

I didn't sell any jewels. All the bosses got burned super hard. Level 41 I was. Judging by the comments I expected this to be really difficult, glad it was the other end of the barrel :)

5:01. Lvl 36 to start the battle. No selling gems for upgrades or consumables. Just alternate between thousand daggers and time stop thousand daggers. Use regular thousand daggers to i frame boss attacks and graze to keep a steady flow of time and mana. Regular thousand daggers is alot more time effective than timestop daggers, so try to use that more often if you can.

Not the whole run, but should give you an idea.

For the record, im pretty sure this is possible at lvl 30, maybe even earlier. I had 2 runs i failed within 5 seconds between levels 30 and 36. Made a few mistakes in each run, and wasnt using iframe graze intentionally. It is realistic imo to jump straight into boss rush after endgame if you know what youre doing. Think i cleared that end room out twice before saying fuck this and going for it.

I grinded to level 49 and after a few more attempts I got it!

Second-last time was 6.00.61 (WHAT?). Last time was 5.14.80.

I think the problem I had before was I kept pausing time without needing to. If you keep spamming Thousand Daggers (like guide says) you're dodging most of the attacks & absorbing a lot of HP & MP. For the boss that turns into bats & the very last boss I found throwing knives up helped a bit, but mostly just Thousand Daggers.

It might be more efficient to grind the boss rush itself once you get to the point where you can complete it. I was getting 1-2 levels per run starting at level 40, and you get to practice the bosses at the same time

5.59.90 first attempt at level 50, and I didn't have the best run. Seems like level 50 is a pretty safe bet.

Once you can beat the boss rush, it is a great way to level up too as well as practice the harder ones

No need to grind. Thousand Daggers is so OP you can tank all the hits and heal off the graze.

Level 36-40 is all you need.

You can sell gems to buy time and knife upgrades without it powering up one of the bosses in boss rush mode. The boss only receives a boost from sold gems in story mode, so wait to beat the story before selling gems. I would prioritize selling emeralds, then rubies and sapphires. The HP regen from Emeralds is extremely small, better to graze. The attack and defense bonuses lost by selling rubies and sapphires is minimal, and quickly regained by leveling up which will happen by completing the boss rush while improving your time.

No need to grind. Thousand Daggers is so OP you can tank all the hits and heal off the graze.

I finished the entire game never selling a single gem.

Level 36-40 is all you need. Just rush every boss spamming Thousand Daggers and nobody stands a chance against you.

If you don't manage to beat the bosses fast enough you'll at least level up in the Boss rush and can.

Just get as close as you can to each boss and Spam daggers. If they attack while you're still throwing you'll just heal.

If you have bad luck and miss too many hits and lack enough MP just stop time and work on the MP recovery.

I started Boss Rush at level 32 and I'd gain 2 levels after each run but I was never killing them fast enough. At 36 I almost had it but the final boss froze me too many times to where I lost too much time. At level 38 I was strong enough to finish the Boss Rush at 5min and 45 seconds.

The only requirement for the S rank is to simply defeat all the bosses in under 6 minutes. You can use as many items as you wish and any abilities you want. My opinion is to get to level 40+ before attempting this to make short work of the bosses. I would use my farming method of using the holy sword and go right of nitoris shop and kill the 6 blue orbs and go left back into the shop, and repeat until high enough level. Once your strong enough, all you need to do is stay stocked on all health potions and max out your time and daggers. Then start boss rush from the shop menu and spam thousand knives! Remember thousand knives does less damage during time stop, so spam a couple in normal time, then a couple in stopped time, get the hang of mixing it up. I found a video Ill link here that shows someone beating in over 5 minutes to get an idea of the strategy.
