How to unlock the Yellow Jersey (Difficult) achievement in Tour de France 2009 - Definitive Guide
Pick Astana if you to get this the easiest way possible. Unless you are really good at the time rials I'd suggest using the D-PAD to deselect your best riders in the general classification for them, that way you won't lose too much time. Contador should be the rider you aim for the overall best time with, he's the best in the mountains and should get you this achievement without too much of a struggle.
On the mountain stages a way to get a big gap on the rest is to attack before the last mountain, preferably on the second last mountain if it is close to the last one. You will get a nice gap if you put your effort to 100%. They will probably catch up a little on the final climb, but you should make it to the finish line. Just in case your rider somehow cracks. Reload the game without saving and experiment with the effort, this shouldn't happen though unless you attack way too early. I suggest only attacking if the last 2 climbs are within the last 60 kilometers.
If you feel you're not gaining enough time or any time at all you could always reload your save and experiment on some of the medium mountain stages, but it's perfectly doable without attacking on any of those.
Doing this with Contador should also get you the White Jersey achievement.
By far the easiest (and I mean really easy) way to get this + the White Jersey is to take control of Astana. Astana has by far the best cyclers that can help your main cycler (which should be Contador) end in first place. The added bonus is that Contador also competes for the White Jersey, so if you win the Yellow Jersey with Contador you automatically also win the White Jersey. The main tactic for winning the Tour de France is different for each stage:
- Flat Stage: Do absolutely nothing, just let it end in a mass sprint and make sure your cycler doesn't fall behind.
- Time Trials: As i've said before, time trials are by far the hardest stages and if you're not very good at them you can lose valuable time, so just try to keep the damage at a minimum.
- Mountain Stages: Now this is where you win the Tour de France. What I usually do is wait until the last (or second to last, depending on the distance between the mountains) hill and then attack with Contador. Contador is by far the fastest and strongest climber of the whole game and he will beat any other cycler that tries to go with him. Just let him attack until his attack bar is drained, then press once and put it to 100% and watch your cycler win valuable time against all other cyclers. If, for some reason, your cycler can't get away from the other cyclers and it ends in a sprint up hill, let him go behind one of the other cyclers (preferably Valverde, since he is a decent sprinter) and then right before the finish line (About 3-4Km) let him go past the cycler your following and sprint as fast as you can. It doesn't really matter if you win the stage, as long as you win valuable time against the other cyclers and make sure you don't lose time. I had no problem whatsoever with this achievement, in fact when I started my first tour on difficult, I did exactly as I explained above and I won every single Jersey and got all of the difficult achievements with only Contador.
