INVASION LEVELS EXPLOIT
Due to a bug, the last three (16 - 18) Invasion levels can only be played on German difficulty, which makes beating them and earning General rank extremely tough.
There is an exploit to force the game to load these levels on Casual automatically.
First, load up level 15 - The Last Offensive and choose Casual difficulty.
Beat the level and choose to 'Continue' at the end screen. This will automatically load up level 16 - When Toys Collide on Casual difficulty, instead of the set German difficulty.
You'll now notice the level is extremely easy compared to on German difficulty. Beat the level as normal and ensure you keep your Toy Box health at 100%.
Once the level ends you'll be presented with two options: to 'Retry' or 'Main Menu'. Select 'Main Menu'.
From the main menu, select 'Play Toy Soldiers', then 'Campaign' and then 'Continue'. This will load up Level 17 - Not of This Toy Box, again on Casual difficulty. Beat the level as per the last level and again select 'Main Menu' at the end screen.
From the main menu, select 'Play Toy Soldiers', then 'Campaign' and then 'Continue'. This will load up Level 18 - Revenge of Toyzilla', again on Casual difficulty.
This is the hardest level on the Invasion missions, and even on casual you need to manually tend to the infantry and cavalry waves. I would deal with them with a Level 3 machine gun by the entrance to the Toy Box.
Throughout this level focus on planting level 3 mortars on every spare small emplacement, a level 2 anti-air tower halfway along the road from the Toy Box and Level 3 artillery on every spare large emplacement. Use the P-51 to wipe out aircraft quickly and whittle down infantry waves. This will give you plenty of cash to build those towers.
Once RoboBob arrives, attack him early with an artillery next to your Toy Box and gradually shift to the next artillery guns as RoboBob moves along. On his third form, he will become a flying head, this can easily be destroyed by manually using your level 2 anti-air.
Once he's destroyed, you'll have beaten every level on General rank and also earn the 'Mr Roboto' achievement too, if you hadn't already.

I suspect that this only works if you haven't played any further. The first resume worked. But the second time I jumped to a later level.

Yeah like the guide says you need to delete your save for this to work and do all the levels continuously and not start any other levels. If your save isn't deleted then pressing continue will put you elsewhere

I'll give a few hints in addition to the existing guide in case you have to play it in 'German' after all.
At the beginning I built two Flaks next to the game box. They take care of the first wave of aircraft.
Meanwhile, I jumped into the aircraft myself. The common soldiers come out of the small rockets on the right-hand side. If you kill them with the aeroplane when you get out, you can earn lots of combos and, as a result, plenty of money. This is very important.
Once you have collected enough money, build/upgrade howitzers. Sell the flak to the right of the game box and build a howitzer. As soon as you have spent the money, get back in the aeroplane and kill the new waves of common soldiers. Repeat this again and again.
The long-term goal is to have level 3 howitzers and a level 2 anti-aircraft gun everywhere. If you have money left over, build mortars. If you build them, then have enough money to upgrade them directly. Otherwise they will be destroyed directly by the tanks.
Always aim your howitzer at the tanks and shoot yourself if necessary.
This way you should make it to the boss. Always shoot RoboBob yourself with a howitzer. Start with the howitzer to the right of the game box. Later with the most distant howitzer. Always aim the other howitzers at him when he moves out of the field of fire. RoboBob has three phases. In the last phase, it is only the head. The head is finished off with one or two shots from the howitzer.
