This is pretty easy and fast! yes you can host a game and put it to whatever settings you want and still get the achievement, but what I would like to let you know is if someone quits in the middle of a match it will NOT COUNT!

A bit of advice , try it now or as soon as possible , Lots of players at the moment but connections seem to drop frequently.

How many players are required to start a game? I got two xbox ones and two accounts that can get it with games with gold. Just curious if it can be double boxed by myself when I'm ready to get around to actually playing this game

Just double boxed it. Although it implies matchmaking it can be done in a private match with 2 people. I turned off AI and did an Elimination match and it took all of 40 seconds.

I've been trying using matchmaking (I don't have 2 machines, nor a friend with an xbox)

I'm guessing nobody is playing right now as matchmaking fails every time.

I might have better luck on the weekend

Edit: Got it by inviting folks to a private match.

Just as a note, we couldn't connect to eachother with one person on a One and one person on a 360, it worked when we were both on 360s so you probably have to be on the same console type.

I just did this and it didn't unlock. I played one game, players quit in the middle. Obviously didn't work. Then amazingly, found a game and played it from start to finish. Did not pop.

Used a 360 and an Xbox one, just hosted on the One and invited the other player in and it unlocked

Go to Multiplayer > Xbox Live Match and press to continue. Choose Quick Match and you should join a game. Same thing as above, you don't need to win the race but you might as well enjoy the game and play! When the race ends you will get the achievement.
