I'm doing the 14.42 San Francisco to San Jose Diridon service.
Save as I hit the 40mph mark to avoid having to do the whole start up procedure
Ignore the calling points, keeping it below the speed limit will give you roughly 40 miles before you hit a red signal

I just used the Bay City Breakdown scenario required for the other Scenario achievement in this DLC pack. I start up the train and go full throttle ignoring the speed limits until I hit the 79mph limit marker so I can build up the speed faster for this section. I get to about 65mph.
I then reduce the throttle to P2 to maintain the speed and about 14 mins later you go through a Red Light.
It's not perfect because your speed yo yos between about 40-60 mph but it's a great way to idle boost this while you do something else. There's a lack of very steep hill gradients adversely affecting the speed of the train in this.
