It's a Trap!

It's a Trap!

Killed 5 rebels at once with a trap in your Mausoleum

30

How to unlock the It's a Trap! achievement in Tropico 4 - Definitive Guide

Remarkably easy - here's how:

First, build a city as usual. Make sure you build a Mausoleum and buy the Booby Traps upgrade. Then, you'll want to destroy all sources of fun, such as restaurants; all needs facilities, like churches, clinics, farms, etc.; and select every controversial edict, like Prohibition and Nuclear Testing, but especially Conscription and Inquisition. Fire all of your soldiers and block the job slots.

At this point, your happiness % should be going down like crazy and a steady stream of rebels should be appearing. Once you get to about 20 or so rebels, issue the Lure the Rebels edict. They'll attack the mausoleum and fight El Presidente, but 10 or so should survive. Once they blow up the Mausoleum, it will explode and take out all of the nearby rebels (and occasionally a civilian). The achievement should pop around the time of the explosion if enough rebels are killed.

UPDATE: SilentRich69 passed along a quick way to do this via a challenge map (also, see the video below):

Okay short and sweet way to do this.

1. Go to challenges and click meet the rebels.
2. When you start build a mausoleum with your starting cash.
3. Then build several farms just to stabilize your tiny economy.
4. Wait until you get a message at your Palace from CEO Keith Preston and take his offer of 100 rebels and $50,000.
5. Use the $50,000 to buy a trap for your mausoleum and then build a ministry so you can get a defense minister.
6. Issue the lure the rebels edict and let them wipe your men out they should all gather by the mausoleum and be blown to bits.

FYI, I was playing around trying to trigger an uprising and was able to get over 30 rebels killed in one trap, so feel free to err on the side of caution. (I had over 100 rebels at the time.)

First time I tried this method it was 14 rebels vs 4 army. My 4 soldiers killed 13 of the rebels! And then of course the last one blew up my mausoleum and died with it (as did 11 innocent bystanders btw). So second attempt I made sure there was over 30 rebels vs only 2 soldiers (I fired the rest of them). So as this tip says, error on the side of caution. Have a lot of rebels. An absurd amount even, just to save you 50k worth of building/upgrading.

I did this with a 1 (just El Presidente) vs 10 rebels. El Presidente was injured, so all 10 rebels were at the Booby Trapped Mausoleum, and only 1 of them died (along with 13 civilians somehow). So I don't know what I did wrong.

Strange...generally it kills all of the rebels that are physically on the building tile (the ones that run up the stairs).

Just because there are 10 rebels, doesn't mean they are all at the mausoleum. You can actually zoom in and watch them enter the mausoleum.

Correct, though sometimes rebels outside will get killed as well. As always, just make sure you have a ton of rebels.

Save the game just before you issue lure the rebels and it helps save A LOT of time redoing this.

Great guide, if people are still having problems I would recommend just making sure you have 15+ rebels and either one army person or no army people (since your character will take off when he/she gets wounded)

It worked for me, but I left all the farms going (along with food for the people) and only 1 doctor, since people were dropping likes flies faster than they were making rebels

Make sure your avatar is near the mausoleum before you lure the rebels! Mine was half way across the island and a fair few rebels took off after him instead.

I've gotten as high as 31 rebels in it and not managed to kill more than 2.

I think this works better if you keep a few soldiers (I had 6 vs 20 rebels). That way, the battle will continue long enough for all the rebels to get to the Mausoleum. When I only had 1 or 2 soldiers, they died too quickly and I could never trap enough rebels no matter how many there were.

That's not a bad idea - and I would also suggest putting the military structures near the Mausoleum, so the battle actually occurs nearby and the surviving rebels can run to it.

You might just try it on another map - not sure if the game is finicky about location, placement, etc. For what it's worth, my mausoleum was near the center of my city.

Perfect, thank you Globalizer and SilentRich69. 48 rebels (and 4 civilians, oops) blown into tiny, tiny bits in about 15 minutes.

I've watched the mausoleum blow up a dozen times today. I kept one or two soldiers at the mausoleum and would either send my dictator to visit the mausoleum just before doing a lure or make sure he was nearby. I let attacks happen naturally and lured em in. Starting rebel strength ranged from 18-24. Some guys scattered after the fight so the number that stayed around varied but once most of them were there at the top of the stairs when the building blew up. The highest rebel death toll I got was 1. I'd say about half the time it was 1 rebel and the other half 0 rebels. And with that, I'm giving up on this one. Great guide in the sense that I got plenty of rebels to attack and blow up the mausoleum. But the game didn't want to cooperate.

Flawless guide! I've tried and tried with this achievement without success. Used this guide for the first time and BOOM! Achievement popped.

Thanks. Big positive vote from me.

The SilentRich69 technique worked like a charm. Only issue I had was my El Presidente managing to fight off about 15 of the rebels by themselves. They didn't even have any of the abilities that made them a better fighter. Eventually they were wounded though and enough of the rebels crowded in the mausoleum for the achievement to pop.

Buy a mausoleum and upgrade it with booby traps. Don't use Military Modernization. Make sure your people are not too happy so they keep becoming rebels, they need to outnumber your army. The best missions for this are No. 6 'Bickering Factions' and No. 13 'The Blind Revolution'. Once you think there are enough of them, save the game and use the edict 'lure the rebels', they will attack your mausoleum. After the rebels win, the mausoleum will blow up, taking out all the rebels around it. It works if there are a lot around, not if they already fled or are still walking out of the blast radius. Your army shouldn't be too small (I fired most, but not all), because all the rebels actually need to be in the place before they win. The trait 'Coward' might help.
