How to unlock the Old Faithful achievement in Tropico 4 - Definitive Guide
Given the random nature of disasters, you could be lucky and get this one during your campaign missions. If, like me, you're not that lucky then you'll need to load up a Sandbox map on Pachanga Volcanica. Make the settings as easy as possible (high stability, good economy and such, but NOT God Mode) and set the Random Events slider on Plenty. Then it's just a matter of setting up a working economy and waiting. For me, "waiting" took 85 years, so be prepared for a long and boring grind. Luckily you don't have to worry about the time limit, you can always select Keep Playing once your set number of years are up...
MOST IMPORTANTLY: Save often, and in seperate saves, as this game has a nasty habit of crashing and corrupting save games. Try to keep your island population under 400-500 or so, as crashes happen more frequently with a higher population.

Just wanted to comment that this does not work when you continue a mission after you have beaten it. Just tried it and on my 4th volcano eruption still no achievement.

Not sure what to tell you Raviolicaponi. I sympathise for you because this is a pain in the arse to grind, but what I've written above is exactly how I got the achievement. I was 35 years past my mandate when my third eruption happened.

Both of the guides are great, but I didn't have the modern DLC and I tried Matty's 4 times with no luck (I kept getting 2 but NEVER a third).
However I did notice that on the challenge stranded which leaves you shipwrecked on an island with lots of oil I got the volcano to erupt 3 times within 18 years. It actually went off for me on that island multiple times.
If you don't have the dlc and you just can't make Matty's work (which again is a good solution) this is yet another method that seemed to work REALLY fast for me.

No, at least not what it was named for me. It's under challenges and it should be the one that explains "you" were shipwrecked on the island.
I have not played this game in a very long time but I believe it was called Stranded or Shipwrecked or something like that. I got it in less than 20 years, though apparently that's not a for sure thing. Like I said though when I tried without the DLC the other solutions didn't work. If you have the DLC you might have better luck with them.
I did do this challenge a few times and got well over 3 eruptions in the time allowed for the challenge though so without DLC this should work...

Took me 70 years (71 until the achievement popped). It's a good mission, though, because you can stretch the end by holding back oil.

For those who have the Modern times DLC I completed the entire game and had no luck . But when I started the Modern Times DLC I had a break on the third mission.
Its the mission where you start to notice Penultimo is behaving weirdly (being useful and not as stupid) while doing the mission the volcano on the island exploded not 3 but 4 times throughout the entire level it was quite amazing.
I am not saying this is definite but I highly recommend trying this level if you have the DLC before now I have only ever had 2 eruptions at most in the original campaign.

Most islands have a volcano. Volcanic eruptions happen randomly and won't kill you, you just have to see three of them in one mission to get the achievement.
