Hey kid, you want some... crystals? Then you should log onto Trove during the yearly Valentine's Day event.
During this event, you're able to go companion egg hunting for Heckbugs in Geode. These are different from normal critters - not only can their eggs also be found lying around in the Geode Caves as freebies, but the numerous eggs you'll get also only take 10 seconds to hatch. Besides being a good amount of geode mastery for getting all nine different companions upfront, duplicates can be sold for 200/1500/10000 crystals (based on rarity) at the Forever Home Finder nearby. However, upgrading your companions at the nearby trainer before sending them to their forever home does yield increased crystals. Chart follows.
Common 1-star: 200
Common 2-star: 400 (540 cost = LOSS)
Common 3-star: 600 (540+930=1470 cost = LOSS)
Common 4-star: 800 (540+930+1320=2790 cost = LOSS)
Common 5-star: 1000 (540+930+1320+1710=4500 cost = LOSS)
Unommon 1-star: 1500
Uncommon 2-star: 3000 (Spend 540)
Uncommon 3-star: 4500 (Spend 1470)
Uncommon 4-star: 6000 (Spend 2790)

The long and short of this data is: DO NOT upgrade Common Companions before selling them. DO upgrade Uncommon and Rare Companions ONCE before selling them. This gets you the best ratios of crystals spent to crystals gained.
Secondly, unique to the event, are three different 'Troves', based on which of the three Geode Caves you're in: Cave Skitterer's for Sunken Sunvault, Cave Hybrid's for Verdant Veins, and Mystical Heckbug's for Moonglow Grotto. These contain items unique to the event, as well as more eggs, and more crystals.
Thirdly and fourthly, the usual perks are still there - you'll still get Lesser Crystal Caches from these critters, which will give you Crystals and rarely, Crystal Pinatas (which sell for decent flux or can be tossed for more crystals). And there are also still Crystals in Geode itself, so doing drive-by Thumper/Vacamatic stuff is optimal as well. You'd want to set aside time on Monday ideally if you want these idle crystals, since that's Geode day and crystal drops are doubled/tripled (depending on patron status).
At least this year, the event lasts 14 days. Go get crystals.
