Pearls of Wisdom are an upgrade material that can rarely be found by defeating enemies and occasionally found inside chaos chests. Alternatively if you've got the flux you can buy them in the market.

Fully upgrading a crystal item takes 11 Pearls of Wisdom, any other items take 9 Pearls of Wisdom.

To upgrade an item you'll need to find an enchanted forge, either build one yourself from the adventurers crafting bench or find one in a club world, at the forge simply select your item and upgrade away!

The first time you use a pearl on an item it will gain an additional stat, each time after that one of the stats increase a bit, you can see how many times you've upgraded each stat by looking for the pearls next to the stat in the inv/character screen, each stat can only be upgraded a max of two times.

I got the achievement when I got 8 pearls on my radiant bow and I can't add anymore

Nice! Yeah I think the first pearl is just to add an extra stat to the item, if you had 4 stats on the bow when you started then it already had 1 pearl on it. :)
