How to unlock the Deep In The Forest achievement in TUNIC - Definitive Guide

The red key is attained after beating the Siege Engine boss which is found in the Eastern Vault (Page 32). This is story related and cannot be missed.

To get in to the vault you will first need to have progressed beyond ringing the East and West bells and beaten the Garden Knight boss.

You will be exploring the gardens and building outside the vault praying/resting (Hold A) to the many magic totems dotted around, connecting the pink power/magic lines until they all feed in to the big golden door up the central stairs inside the vault building. If you’ve picked up Page 32 then this will be pretty clear.

Once you’ve beaten the boss you must pick up a small stone rod that falls from his remains, it’s got a red gem in the end.

You take this and slot it in the ground on the blue plate at the bottom of the stairs you came up to get to the boss arena. A large plinth will rise out of the ground and grant you the red key. Pick it up by pressing A.

What I really came here to write was a brief guide for the boss because initially this might seem an insurmountable task, but can actually be cheesed pretty easily by just sprinting constantly to the left and hitting the boss in the weak spot up it’s butt. The only other place you can hit him is directly in the face - but this will keep you in line to take hits from his various moves/projectiles, so we’ll just avoid that and stick to the butt.

If you’d rather not have to cope with his move set then this is a very straightforward way to beat him - if a bit tedious. Make sure NOT to lock on to him, as this will stop you from running. Feel free to lock on when going in for hits, but otherwise don’t use it.

A brief summary of his moves as though you are looking straight at him:
Ground slam either side. (Usually left because you’re running that way)
Wide sweep attack, from left to right or vice versa.
Machine gun (red bullets)
Big laser beam
3x tracking rollerball bombs

You will avoid literally every single move he can throw at you if you stick close to his left side and keep running. The only time this might prove tricky is if he’s jammed up in a corner somewhere, or there is rubble and debris in your path that you get stuck on. If this happens and he starts firing that big orange laser beam, just duck behind cover and wait for it to finish.

If he has spawned some of the flying robots you can ignore them completely. He will usually kill them himself whilst waving his limbs around or shooting his gun.

I can’t say I noticed if he really had a second phase, his moves possibly come at you closer together during his final section of health - but it really won’t matter if you’re chasing his ass to the left.

I’ve attached a short video for demonstration. You’ll notice that I haven’t used any health potions, and I only get hit by his machine gun right at the end of the fight because I get stuck on some debris, as mentioned above.

Good luck out there, I hope this is helpful to someone!

Great boss guide, I didn't even notice the rear target on my first couple of very unsuccessful attempts lol. Was still pretty stressful though, my thumb was slipping off the stick cos my hands were getting sweaty 😆

The Siege Engine boss fight will take time and patience. It has a weak point in the front and the back (will do more damage). When you attack from the front, be ready to dodge melee and ranged attacks. Attack the Siege Engine from behind or use ranged attacks with the Fire Wand after the boss drops below 50%.

After it summons 3 fire minions, either take them out at range or plan to run/dodge when they come near you. Use the environment when possible for cover to heal. Once the boss is defeated, pick up the key and use it to collect the Red Key for the trophy. Lastly, head to the temple to turn in the key.

Story-related; cannot be missed.

The red key is located in the Forest Fortress, which is off to the east of the overworld. It can be hard to get to the entrance on your first playthrough. The easiest way is to go back where the cave with the stick was at the start of your playthrough, head east through some bushes you have to chop, and then go up the ladders next to a line puzzle door. After climbing to the top, head left through more bushes, and round the corner to be at the base of a staircase. You can go up the stairs and pull the lever to lower a ladder to get back up, but at the base of the stairs, go along the right side of them and follow the hidden path to get to a platform in the middle of the water. From there you can go east into the Forest Fortress.

This area is quite long. You'll need to progress through the Forest Fortress, then underground through a cave area, and then finally into the Eastern Vault. Once through all of those areas, you'll get to the Interior of the Eastern Vault where you'll fight a huge boss. Beating it drops a small shaft you can insert into the ground at the base of the stairs, and your reward is the red key.

Found after defeating the Ruin Artillary in the Forest Fortress Vault, the boss has two weak points, its head and a power cell at the back of it. If you can get it to hit itself with its own bombs they will do a ton of damage. After defeating it grab the item and put it into the hole between the boss and the shrine.
