There are a number of coins in the game, the shop sells a few later in the game and each area has between 1-4 coins.
I want to specify that if you do not find them all in one playthrough and have not spent them on the well and are kept in your inventory, you can carry them over on new game plus and then find the ones you know are there. So you can find 9 on playthrough 1 and 6 on the next one and so forth. Just do not spend them.
There are at least 15 coins in a playthrough, I had 16 on my first playthrough, but accidentally completed the game using the manual ending which doesn't let you replay from where you were unlike the game over ending.

for anyone trying to find all 15 in the first playthrough this is the guide I used. https://www.gamepur.com/guides/all-coin-locations-in-tunic

I was meaning when I said don't put them in the well to keep them in your inventory. You have to hit 15 on the well, but you can collect them in your inventory over multiple playthroughs.

I want to add that I followed the video guide in the top solution. I found the 13 coins easily, the video is great. I bought the 14th for 999 coins, but then I couldn't find the 15th for sale anywhere. I checked multiple vendors and even waited some time in between.
You can do what the other guide suggests, start NG+ and find them then, but I also found a resource to find a 16th and 17th coin in the same playthrough. This is the link:
https://www.reddit.com/r/TunicGame/comments/tq1kee/more_than...
The original post shows a location for a coin, and another is described in one of the comments. Both descriptions are pretty clear.
Here is the comment for a coin in the cathedral (The extra one I found):
"The other one is in Cathedral, in the birds/cages room. You find a chest behind some cages. There is a wall adjacent to the chest, which you can push. You can find a chest inside, which contains a coin."
Using this method, I was able to do this in one playthrough after a moment of confusion

You will need to throw a total of 15 coins into the well, all the wells share the same counter.
The Overworld: South of the Old Town where there are two statues of the goddess with a spiral staircase, go to the west one and behind the small copse of trees is a hidden staircase, the chest containing the coin is in here.
The Overworld: South of the Old Town where there are two statues of the goddess with a spiral staircase, go to the west one and behind the small copse of trees is a hidden staircase, the chest containing the coin is in here.
The Overworld: Under the bridge that you took when you started the game is a chest that cointains this coin, go down the ladder to the West beach and head around behind the waterfall to use the secret path to get over here.
The Overworld: You will need the Magic Orb or Teleport Dash for this chest, head to the West beach and cross the bridges and you will come to some turrets. Destroy the turrets and hook or dash your way across to the chest containing the coin.
Under the Well: This coin is above the shrine, to get to it you will need to progress through the area a bit until you are in the room to the West of the altar room, there is a hidden passage way, press in the middle part of the wall, that leads to the upper area of the altar room which you can use to walk across and get the coin.
Under the Well: Follow the rail north and this chest is in a hidden area in the north west corner of the room with the passageway to the top of the altar room.
Dark Tomb: In the room with the three laser statues pointing at a chest go to the North East corner for a hidden passage that will take you to the chest with this coin. (image of the hidden path)
East Forest: In the Lower Forest on the platform with all the spiders there is a small pathway down at the East side, use that to get around to get to the chest with the coin on the lower level of this platform.
Eastern Fortress: In the room past the underground portion with the spiders and when you meet your first group of the Custodians there is a bunch of barrels against the wall, destroy the barrels for the passageway to the chest with this coin.
The Quarry: Just in front of the Monastary there is a ladder you can climb, head up and it will be the first chest around the corner.
The Swamp: You will need the Teleport Dash for this, from the shrine head into the next area and take a sharp right and climb the ladder. Teleport dash to the top of the pillars than head south to the chest with the coin on a ledge.
The Swamp: The chest is located next to the headstone of the large skeleton enemy, head up the ladder to the right past the shrine and down the slopes on the south side.
The Swamp: In the area wil the pillar head to the south east portion to find a hidden pathway that will take you to the chest with the coin.
The Swamp: Head up the path at the back and you will reach an area that will take you to the Cathedral, instead go south to find the chest next to a rock.
The Merchant: The Skeleton Merchant sells 2 coins for 999 currency each.
Tossing coins into the wells will unlock additional relics slots. New slots will open with 3, 6, 10, and 15 coins. Do this 15 times and the trophy will unlock.
You'll likely come across various wells in the game, and find a bunch of golden coins in chests. What you need to do with them is equip golden coins and use them next to a well to toss them in. For this achievement, you need to use 15 golden coins in wells. It doesn't matter what well you use; you can use the same well for all 15 coins, if you want. Throwing coins in gives you additional ability slots for the ability cards you find.
There are more than 15 coins in the game. I believe there are 15 coins in chests, and then at least another three coins that you can buy from the hidden shops. The shops each sell a coin for 999 gems, so if you're playing without No Fail on, you'll likely want to save that money for upgrading your various stats to improve your chances of surviving. But, if you're playing with No Fail, then the money is almost useless and you might as well spend it on the gold coins in shops so you don't have to spend more time hunting down chests of them.
Here is a video showing the location of all 15 coins in chests. Once you have 15, head to any well (there's one just to the right of the overworld teleport pad by the Old House) and toss them all in. Full credit to Maka for the video.

You can buy a few coins from the merchant.

To be more precise, 2 coins can be purchased from the seller. Each one costs 999 cubes.

There is no need to buy coins from a merchant. They can all be found in the game if you know where to look.
Usually there are difficulties with 15 coins.
The last missing coin is in the Cathedral. In the room with the bird cages.
If you stand facing the exit of the room, this will be the right wall:

Coins are not transferred to NG+, so you need to make all your wishes in 1 game. Video guide (en) on collecting 15 coins.
