How to unlock the Opal Hoarder achievement in TY the Tasmanian Tiger 2: Bush Rescue HD - Definitive Guide

This is cumulative and should come naturally by playing all of the missions throughout the game. However, there is a rather effective way to grind.
1. Defeat Patchy, the first boss, to unlock the map
2. Travel to the southeast part of the map where there is a beach and a lot of water
3. Swim over to the island with the bouncy beach chairs and collect the two sets of bags totaling 3000 opals
4. Swim over to the near by island with the race track. Start the race and immediately exit. The opal bags will have spawned again.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have the achievement
Bonus step: Once you have defeated Patchy and have enough opals you can buy the warprang from Sly's Shack. Once you do this, repeat steps 3 and 4 and then use the warprang to get up to a bag that has 3000 opals in it, doubling your reward.

So this is cumulative rather than all at once?
Answered my own question: Yes, cumulative. I unlocked it having 110,000 Opals (and had spent 90,000 previously).

You will get this by playing the game, Opals are given to you when defeating enemies, completing missions and finding collectibles.
Took me roughly 8-10 hours to get from playing normally.
