How to unlock the The Cat and the Toad achievement in UnderMine - Definitive Guide

A warning about missability in the spoiler tag.

When you reach the locked gate in Gold Mine 4, you have to kill the two folks standing in front of it. Go for the one on the left first, as they will heal the soldier. You can't drop bombs unless you swing first, but they largely stand still, so you can swing once then drop a bomb and after only a few more swings they'll be done. The soldier will charge at you, so the best tactic, especially if you have no or few upgrades, is to swing once, and then jump away immediately. Repeat until dead, even if it takes several minutes. The key will drop when they're both dead and you'll be able to head down into Delvemore.

I've not been there yet, but when you say missable does it mean your character needs to die for you to try again? Or once the boss is dead are you blocked from going through the goldmines again?

Once you beat the boss, it remains dead on that save I think. I wasn't sure on the missable part, but I did this first, then killed the boss on another run, and now the boss is dead every new run so if I killed the boss first, I wouldn't have been able to get this achievement on this save file - would have to do a new save where the boss is alive for you to bypass it doing this method.

You're totally right. I did all of these on my first run before I even knew that there were summoning stones. I'll update this.

Selt should be the giant centipede thing that you'd need to hit its tail to damage it.

You will be on a floor where two guards are at a door - when you talk to them, they will tell you that it's better for you to turn back.

Oh ok! I think I ran into them, appreciate it! Didn’t realize there were a bunch of these missables. I see people mentioning summon stones but not explaining what they are in solution. Do those items make them become not missable?

Read the spoiler tag if you want to know what it all means in mostly unvague terms

It still doesn’t say what a summoning stone is or if this is actually missable or something can be done. I presume these stones have something to do with it and What does completing a run entail?

It's not missable. You can try again after you complete a run, as in beat the final boss. You lift a summoning stone and it resets the bosses and you can do any of the skip achievements on subsequent runs. At least, I assume. I did them all on my first so I can't totally confirm

Looks like this changed in recent updates. I can't unlock any of the boss skip achievements after my first successful run.

I can confirm that you can get ALL the "go to X before beating boss Y" cheevs in your second run. Play normally and beat all bosses, then you get the summoning stone and all bosses revive. After that do a new run but don't go beat the new bosses, just run right to the exit and skip down to the level below. You don't even have to solve those side quests (beating the two guys in the mines and so on), since all doors to the next levels are open... I sped through in an hour or so... even if you die after a few of the cheevs, you can just reenter via the teleporter dude and finish any map you still need the cheev for. Also you get a new thingie (not sure what it does!) when you beat the salamander at the end but didn't beat all the other bosses! (I don't think it is cheev related, but just for completionists...) You can add this (copy or rewrite as you see fit) to the solution if you wish :-)

Just wanted to provide another easier solution to these "skip boss" achievements. If you are planning on beating the game you will be able to unlock all of these achievements without doing any of the required extra steps. As the bosses respawn on future runs but you have already maps and fast travel unlocked you can just use that to unlock the achievements.

Steps would be:
1. Beat the game first aka Lift the Summoning Stone.
2. Go back in to the mine.
3. Use the fast travel guy (room on top of the one where you start) and just teleport to specific floor - in this case: Dungeon.

That's it.

Doesn't work anymore - I can't unlock any of the boss skip achievements using this method after my first successful run.
